View Full Version : Just when I thought....

Just when I thought there was no more animosity between the XC riders and us DH and Freeriders.

That is, until today.

I was IM'ed by someone from another message board I go to.

Not only did he give me a bunch of shit for recomending Avid mech's over Shimano's. And for saying that a broken cassette (i.e. cut apart) to run a single speed on his Hardrock was a TERRIBLE idea (the rider wanted to be able to easily switch between 8-speed and Single Speed).

THEN, he had the audacity to say the following:

1) Shimano Mech's are better than Avid's. "If they say Shimano -- They work. Simple." He said how awesome they were, how readily available parts were, and how much cheaper they are.

$10 cheaper, and all around inferior to Avids.

2) "There is a reason every offroad racer uses Shimano -- Flawless."

I was actually speechless about this. I made sure to note that racer's get parts for free too. Durability should not be based on what the racers are riding.

3) I asked "Frank, be honest with me here. How much agressive freeriding do you do?" He replied "None, but I fix it all." I said, "So how can you speak for the durability of a product in an aspect of riding you don't do?"

When I brought up that I ride harder than him, he disagreed. I was unaware that you could clean 8' to flat on a 16lb Single Speed Trek HT. He says he rides harder than I do. Interesting.

4) He claims the following companies are shit:

Race Face
SRAM
MRP
Banshee

When I made mention that the Diablous stem and the Race Face NS DH cranks are among the strongest bicycle parts in the world, he disagreed "They aren't the stronget, you are brainwashed." When I asked him why, exactly, Shimano chains, derailuers, cassettes, and shifters are better than SRAM. He said "Shimano mean's it's flawless." Followed by a "once you get a real mech to put parts on right and do real adjustments youll understand."

When I mentioned that I am a "real mech" he said "You are too young to be a competent mechanic." Old man better watch it or I'll break his hip.

This went on for quite some time. He was not just ribbing me either. He honestly believed that everything he was saying was true!

He thinks that Sun Mammoth rims are the best bang for his buck. Saying that Rhynolite's are shit.

He thinks Pro-Tapers are shit.

He also made claim that my bike was worthless. He was SHOCKED that it weighed 45 pounds, and said "with the right part's spec, it should be 30 to 35 pounds." Maybe if I used Road spec parts.

"do you downhill." I said "starting to, I'm gonna start racing next season."

"Not a sport. Period." I actually started laughing out loud about this. My roommate thought I was fucking crazy.

"its a fucking jkoke, , a sport where fat guys ride a 50 pound bike down some rocks without pedaling is not a sport"

I told him NASCAR (which he loves) is nothing but a bunch of monkeys driving in circles all day long. He didn't seem to like this to much.

Then he tried to say that if you aren't racing, you aren't mountain biking. Made everything about biking out to be all serious and racer style, and that if you are downhilling, you are just wasting time.

He mentioned that back in the day, people were doing 10 footers to tranny on full rigid bikes.

Told me 3 times to "get a real bike"

"Nokian -- Worthless, Heavy Tires." 650 Grams BEYOTCH!

"Hayes -- Warranty whores." "had them for 2 years, nary a problem" "you will." "no I won't. These were the number one raced brake on the Norba National DH circuit"

I never understood some people. I could NOT stop laughing about this whole conversation. This guy ACTUALLY believed all of the stuff he was telling me!

I plan on sending him a few films (some of you guys' films too) and see if he still thinks he could hang with us big boys on his Hardtail.

I asked if he would put his money where his mouth is, and do a few drops. "Pointless."

Some of these hardcore, anti-everything-Freeride people need to lift up their skirts, grab their balls, and prove what they say.

But when their cranks snap, bars break, wheels collapse, and frames crumple, don't cry to me. And if they don't man up and prove the worthlessness of our bikes, then they need to shut the hell up.

I thought all of this hatred was over, but then you find ignorant people like this. I couldn't stop laughing the whole time he was telling me what I should and should not be riding. And this guy is supposed to be 30 years old!

I can't wait to find out what he thinks my setup SHOULD be. I imagine it'll be Campy road parts with FULL shimano XTR bits and a SID fork with an Air shock.

*sigh*

Haha, he kept insisting that on any trail of my choice, his "30 year old ass" would beat me.

I was like "No shit dude. My bike weighs more than twice yours, with 8 more inches in the rear and 3 more in the front..."

Crazy jackass.

He is a moderator at a non-biking related forum. Some of the members there mountain bike, and there are 2 or 3 of us that offer up parts suggestions, and advice on things. 90% of what we say comes from actual experience on the parts. the other 10% comes from what we heard (There is me, a DH racer on a V10, and some random Canadian kid [If he's Canadian, he MUST be a good biker right?]).

But nope, this guy ain't havin it. He thinks he knows more about freeriding and DH than me. He's never pedaled a DH bike in his life. Basing his whole argument on the fact that XC parts never break for him, so they shouldn't break for me.

I just think it's fucking HILARIOUS that he thinks Race Face cranks and stem's are SHIT, and feels the same about SRAM and Answer bar's.

I told him that when I do the drive-train remodel, there won't be a single Shimano product on the bike he told me I was crazy. He also said that SRAM walked up to him with a sponsorship and he said "nah, I would rather have something on my bike that works."

Old people these days . So crotchety sometimes. Maybe he had an accident in his depends or something..

I agree with it all except your last little bit. 30 ain't old. Seeing as you're just a pup you will figure that out someday.

The irony of all this is you are creating animosity between Freeriders and XC by bringing this to our attention.

Both of you have strong opinions about certain products and they differ...good for you but can't you see that you are no different than the person you are arguing with?

Accept the fact that other people have differing opinions and be accepting of them. You still have the right to smirk to yourself when his cranks break and his bar snaps.

I am completely accepting of XC riding. I still ride, and I am thinking about building a super lightweight XC Hardtail (~22 to 24 pounds, full 27 speed).

Differing opinions is one thing, but pure ignorace is another.

Well, at least I would call having a complete lack of respect for riders of other venues of biking, and deeming non-XC race parts as overkill and worthless, ignorant. But maybe that's just me.

Synchro - The old people comment was sarcasm (note the roll eyes guy). I ride with people well over the 30 year old mark, and they are all bad ass.

Edit: Update on his argument. "If a shock isn't made in Italy, it's worthless."

He insists that a Scream can be 30 to 35 pounds, and still as durable as mine is. I, personally, cannot stop laughing. This is the best biking conversation I have EVER had... Aside from the VPS chat's with Chris.

I certaintly hope he is fucking with me. I didn't think you could be as fucking stupid as to think some of the things he thinks.
