I was talking about riding with one of the gurls from work and now she wants to try riding with me sometime. Now I just have to try to find a bike for her to ride next week and I may have another riding buddy for next year :D She's pretty tough and is totally ok with the idea of crashing :P so I think it could be fun!!!

We're both stoked about it, I'm thinking of bringing her with me on one of my next rides on seymour.

Anyone know of any shops near by where I could rent out a bike for her for the day?

ah rad!!! She'll be so stoked to hear that. Cross you fingers for us that it doesn't rain that day, a sunny day would be perfect for her first ride.

I've found in general that the ladies tend to be a bit better on the skinnies that the guys when they first start riding.

My girlfriend is getting into it, and as much as I hate to say it Synchro, you are right. Her balance is very good, has been from the start. There are a lot of women out there now compared to a couple of years ago.

skissors - bring your friend on the Nov.2 day. I will be doing a second slow run with the GF, we can all go together.

Ladies are better at skinnies because they have better balance as a rule. Narrower shoulders and wider hips make for a lower center of gravity. Lower CoG means they can lean over farther and still recover.

My 4th grade teacher proved this to my class way back... some silly boy claimed that women were inferior, teach made him eat some crow by demonstrating that every girl in the class could do things he couldn't.

Can I give some advice?
If she's a first timer and you think you might wanna ride with her more than the once - make sure you take her on a ride she can actually ride. There's nothing more discouraging than hiking your bike down a trail!! :P
THat way maybe she'll make you a hero ....then, who knows :thepimp:

Skissors - if your friend wants to ride on the 2nd, I can lend her a decent bike.

the bikes from cove go for $50 a day. kinda steep for a "friend" with benefits or not.

I'm not sure if she'll feel comfortable riding with other people that day since it is her first time but I'll still run the idea by her.

I was thinking of doing corkscrew, then pangor, then pingu (or does pingu come before pangor? I can never remember) She's already expecting to have have to walk a bit her first time, but I think she'll still do ok.

lol - Not a great ride for a first timer, esp. if they haven't been on a bike in a while. Even something like Bridal Path can be challenging. You might want to consider the Hyannis connector trails, more of a walking path to experienced riders but a great way to intro a friend to the outdoors on a bike. This way the ride is focused more on you two having fun and the scenery as opposed to fear, crashing and hike-a-biking.

Good luck!

i agree with synchro on this one...these are NOT beginner trails, and if she's never ridden before, you'll seriously freak her out. bridal path would be the best bet, and even then she'll probably walk some.

SFU is a good place to take beginners IMO

nicoles isn't really for a beginner...but it's not that bad i guess. the lower trails would be better.

Nicoles for her 'first' ride... victim indeed.

Please, when getting someone into mountain biking don't send them down a hill with little to no experience. Walkin, endos, and pain can be a bit discouraging :) I'm not saying that she won't be a natural, but balance can take a little time... does she even know how to shift gears?

I good teacher remembers their first ride and understands where their noob is really at ... and doesn't expect them to ride at the level or even close to where the teacher is :)

Have fun~!

wow, you guys make it sound like she's never been on a bike before, She used to have a bmx when she lived in whistler and now she just rides xc but I wouldn't take her on anything I didn't think she could handle. I've already explained to her that she could be crashing a lot or having to walk a bit if she rides seymour but she's ok with it. She mostly just wants to see what its like, she's not expecting to have the best ride of her life up there. If worse comes to worse, we'll just hit the demonstration forest. Hell I went from riding xc at stokes pit and the water shed to riding seymour. She'll do ok. If she gets freaked out when we hit the trail she'll tell me and we'll find something else. It'll be fine :)

I remember my first actual trail ride....my friends chose Neds. A lot of walking was involved, but I still remember it as a good time. Seeing all the stuff on the trails makes you want to practice and get better to ride more next time.

I dont think it really matters (obviously to a certain extent) what you take her on. If she sees it as something she'll like, she'll come back for more!

If you two are looking for more girls to ride with let me know!

Yup. That's where I took my ex for her first ride. Dead moped & the other one down there are good for getting used to riding on skinnies other stuff without the altitude that's generally involved on the North Shore mountains.
If she's already an experienced biker & you think she can handle it, hit Seymour. But I wouldn't wanna do corkscrew for my first ever ride. I think even Ned's would be better.

Always hard to comment in these situations as so much depends upon the rider. Lots of factors to consider. Fitness, unfamililar bike, etc. SFU or the watershed would probably be a good first timer to try out skinnies, some jumps, A-frames, etc. Nice thing about SFU is you get to warm up on dead moped, play in the terrain park and then try out some more challenging stuff on Nicole's. Then next ride I'd take her to Neds - If she's cool with that then go corkscrew.
