I have some old beat up mags on my bike, and a can of gloss spray paint...
If I used many layers of automotive clearcoat would the finish be durable? How many coats? Should I bother sanding?
Please reply if you know much about painting, or have painted disk brakes before.
if your gunanbother to repaint your levers and calipers at leat strip em down first...
Hayes uses very shitty paint on their brakes... which tends to peel right off easily... so thus u dont wanna spray any new paint over Hayes's old paint....
use P320 to strip the old finish off... then apply a couple of coats of Primer suitable for use on Alloy's....
allow to dry then lightly sand with P400 and then go nuts with whatever rattlecan color u have....
if your guna C/C your parts dont use more then 2-3 coats MAX... any more clear then that and the finish will chip easily...
hope that helps...
let me know if u need more info...

Im only planning on painting the lever body, and the calipers.
Could I just use a wire brush attached to a drill to take off the paint?
So the lever body and calipers are made of alloy? or just the levers?
both the lever body adn the caliper are Alloy...
so is the lever blade but dont bother to paint that, it would look stupid...
u could try... but be careful u dont remove any metal with the wire attachement when on a drill... Alloy is soft... keep that in mind...
safest bet would be to finger sand it... it wont take long at all....

I think Hayes figured that putting good paint on something designed to hold (most of the time) paint stripper ... err, I mean Hydraulic Fluid was kinda useless. :)
If you're going to go to all that effort, swap your fluid for the more expensive but paint friendly silicone based fluid while you are at it.

I didn't think you could run the silicone based fluid in Hayes?

Really? Why not? The silicone based fluids are much more seal friendly - anything that will survive the regular fluid should be able to take silicone pretty easy. Silicon isn't corrosive, and doesn't react with the metal in your brakes as much.
I used it in my Hope brakes, worked awesome there. Must admit, I've never tried it in Hayes tho.
