best fork i have ever ridden extensively!! I have a 99 and its indestructable, ive nosed dived harsh off things gone down sick lines and fucked up and its saved my ass like crazy. The sheer size of it is an amazing thing to look at but its size doesnt overpower the front end. Im 145lbs and i can toss my 56lb bike around like nothing, the front end isnt heavy at all. I have no complaints with this fork at all, its 4 years old but feels better than almost every other fork i ride. If ya can get your hands on one do it!

I have a year 2000 that I got from Mullet. I believe I'm the third owner, but the fork has yet to give a single problem. Just the usual fluid changes. When the mech. took the fork apart it was like new inside. I highly recomend this fork.
I think 02 Monsters are highly superior to 99-01 Monsters. The difference is...02 monsters have HSCV damping, whereas the older ones have simple SSV damping...it's the difference between a JRT and a SuperT.
The 02's do not spike at speed and absorb big hits more precisely.
They're all fucking great, but the 02 is a step above.

the HSCV system found in the shiver and 02 monster is a better valving system then SSV found in older monster and jr t. it responds better to fast impacts. the newer forks use dual circuit dampening system one for high speed and one for low speed. the older modles do not use this advanced technology. Not that the older monsters and Jrt are not great forks. The newer ones are just that newer and use more advanced dampening circuits.

I like the 99's and you can find them for damn cheap these days. If I can sell my Super T Ill pick one of those forks up.

Honestly...I've put real time on 99, 01 and 02 monsters...I've ridden the 99 and 01 at whistler, the shore and our home trails which are kind of a wet weather mix of the two...
All the monsters are setup similarly with 7.5 wt oil and 1 pro med and 1 firm spring...oil heights are close.
The only place whereI noticed a real difference was on the high speed choppy parts of our trails and at whistler (A-line, DH, DM, Joyride, etc)...it's not a big difference, not the same between a JrT and a superT (JrTs spike really bad), but it's still noticeable.
Big drops? My fork just feels the best...something about it...probablyt just oil height and rebound/compression settings.
It's not a big difference....but it is definately there.

If i can find someone to trade me forks,i will.
i have a 2002 boxxer that i want to trade for a 99 or 00 monster t..
think that this is a viable trade?
i want to go away from the boxxer just because of reliability...the boxxer is one of the nicest feeling forks i've ridden, but i just want something that will roll over it all.

Not quite, Monsters have always been cartridge forks. They have never used the simple pumping rod SSV system found in Jr. T's. You are right in saying that the 2002 are superior, but it's just a subtle update to the cartridge and air bleed screws on the topcaps (very useful). They are all great, but heavy forks.

i loved my 99. never had any problems with it, just point and shoot. but compared to whats available today, the cartridges are a little out of date.

You know.... eveyone bitches about how heavy the monsters are. They are the longest lasting fork you will ever buy. I have an 03( yes,I know heavy blah blah) and it wheelies and manuals easier than my old JrT.Probably partly because it is WAY taller.Saved my fat ass many times though:hurt:

i have the 2000 model, its an awesome fork i have no complaints with it at all. the 99 and 2000 usually go for about 500 on the buy and sell too so id say that its a pretty good deal on such a good fork. :)

the pre 2003 monsters did not have seperate high/low speed compression. they all weigh pretty much the same, although the 99 is the heaviest out of the bunch at about 10.5lbs i believe.

A HA! Thats how i know you.
Yeah, you are the third owner.
Owner # 1 was one of the warranty guys at Norco, he had it for a few months and sold it to me..then bought a Shiver.
I am owner #2, and a maintenance freak, hence the perfect internals. The left stanchion, lower and decal were nearly new when you bought it....it had a machining defect on the original lower than had some metal flake come loose and scratch the shit out of the stanchion inside, right from the oil seal and down. Full warranty on that, with nearly $900 in replacement parts (for just the 3 pieces!).
You would be proud of the final resting of the old stanchion...it was converted by a friend into a large "peace pipe" with the help of a BLT light and some ingenuity...the only one of its kind I beleive...
And now you are owner #3. That fork rules. I am stoked it went to a good home.

This going on your gemini? I have seen it before but i don't know if i would trust that frame with that fork.
Your a pretty big guy too so i would be wary......
FuManChu
10-22-2003, 04:45 PM
fawk why not? my gemini is a solid steed of ripp-age. saw a dude at my lbs like 3 days ago sporting a 8 inch monster. seen lots of guys running dorados which are 7.45 inchs of travel.i dunno not to worried about it. i have the utter most confidence in my frame lol. but i will prolly be getting a slider plus depending on the deal i can get one for :D

I assume that you have checked the numbers on your Gemini.I believe there was a recall on some, due to breakage at the head tube .The wall thickness was the problem.I know thats off topic but I'd hate to see someone face plant because of a manufacturing defect.:fix: :fix:

i just metioned it cause it is a lighter frame, i know it can handle a seven inch travel fork but monsters are so rigid they transmit so much more force straight into the frame.
Slider plus sound perfect for that frame. i would =

yeah that was on a handful (like 20 i think) of the medium and large 2003 gemini's. they had most of them back when i bought mine but regardless i checked the numbers and mine was okie dokie. it was acutally a problem with the tubing being cut wrong at the junction of the bb shell and downtube so yeah no worries.
and wsc-freerider (i forget your name even though i met ya lol) i see your point. even though the cannondale gemini frame is lighter (weigh wise) IMO it is a strong frame. but i see your point. that isn't the reason for the reconsideration of a monster for a slider plus it is jsut due to the fact of the technology and price and weigh avaliable in the models. i mean SPV rocks the socks and for the price of a used monster (generally 500-700 bucks from what i have seen i nthe buy and sells) i can get a slider plus for roughly around 900 so i figure it is worth it. plus the slider plus weighs only like 6.5 pounds. so you can't lose there. i have been throughly impressed with me breakout and jsut want something a bit bigger and even stiffer.

my 99' monster is about 8th hand, and has belonged to the likes of inshane, jaurey, and chris mac, and it's still going strong, I love the thing!
I can't say anything bad about it!:D

:thepimp: ... I rode a 02 Monster which is basically the same at a 01 and it was seriously a rad feel... absolutely no maintanence needed.... i loved it.... only con wus that it wus a brute but there was still much love with it!!!! I ride a boxxer know and i have done like 1 job on it in 6 months of riding it... so monsters are definetly easy maintenance!

different monster, but the drop crown was originally on my monster, then I swapped it with shane for a normal drop crown.
