View Full Version : cassette removal, (without a chainwhip)
ive got a lockring tool but no chain whip, how can i get my cassette off?
make a chain whip. old chain and vice grips.
ive got an old chain but no vice grips:(
I ehard that in a pinch you can zap strap the cassette to your spokes in 4 places.
I have a whip though.
use an old chain and a vice to hold it
use a rag and wrap it in the direction and get your buddy to hold on tight then give the tool a quick reef to loosen it. It may take you a few trys and you may get some bloody knuckles or your friend but you can make do or go buy a chain whip for how cheap they are it is worth it.

Buy one, or make one-a piece of chain and a thin piece of metal for a handle. Drill a hole the size of a chain pin and then punch the pin through to attach the chain.

Get better ones... 250 pound automotive straps should work. 4 of those shouldn't break, if they somehow do then try more.

use a pipe wrench carefully and put it on a one of the gears and use that. thats what ive been doing for a while now and it works pretty good.
you dont have to reef on the lockring when you are installing it. makes removal hella easy afterwards
i usually tighten mine as far as i can w/ my hand, then 2-3 clicks w/ a crescent wrench. never had a problem with it coming loose, or with removal

I used an old chain and a seat post. All you do is clamp the chain in the seat clamp, it worked pretty good.

very reliable way:
loop an old chain around the big cog, and through the nail removing part of a hammer..... the rest is obvious.

what a great idea,...... just put a peice of wood between the cog and the hammer so you don't damage the cogs with the hammer
This is a terrible description but this method works well for me anyways:
im not sure what they're called but it one of those workbenches where u can move the two planks apart horizontaly, u open them up, put the wheel down so the cassette is in the gap, close the planks so they grip the cassette(some teeth should sink into the wood) then from underneath undo the cassette using the tool.
its a bad description but if you know what i mean it works well
