View Full Version : Ugly jump on Nicoles

Okay, I know there is not alot of suitable building material on Burnaby mountain (very few cedar trees or fir for that matter). But bringing in a painted door to use as a jump??!? The old white paint is peeling off. Nevermind the chunk of MDF (medium density fiberboard) that they used as traction material. That'll fall to pieces in this downpour that we've been having.
This is the jump at the start of nicoles. I'll be hiking in there later this week to haul that garbage out of there.

Dave could not agree with you more. The problem with Burnaby Mountain is a lot of crap is built. There is few guys that do some great work but the continous garbage that happens time to time could jepordize future riding on the mountain. The city has said many times they are not interested in structures being built. These idiots should realize that and keep the building to the people that care and know what they are doing.

I've built alot on burnaby mountain, and if you look, there is no shortage of cedar stumps. They might be dead, but once you strip off some of the outer crap, there's super-strong wood in there, perfect for anything

thats disgusting, that some one would use a old door. i have not seen it but i would imagine that it is quite the eye sore.

I saw that thing, its brutal. People wonder why stunts get torn down on that hill? People ride bikes there, they don't want to be riding on a fricken beat up construction site full of junk.
That thing should go...and be replaced with a nice natural jump.. It isn't big, and rebuildingit with a more asthetically pleasing dirt and stick version would be easy and a less likely target for destruction.
Stuff that looks like it was built by 10 year olds will never last.

We road Nicole's yesterday and I didn't see this stunt. Did somebody already junk it?

Well I certainly didn't think this was going to upset people, and you all are so right it is an eye sore. It seemed like a good idea at the time. So who would like to help tear out the door and spend some time building a nice ramp out dead fall lying around in the forest........cHuck 604-897-7970

The problem is not that its an eye sore it is that the city has a problem with any extreme or semi extreme structures on the hill. They have said in the past they will consider closing trails down. Not sure how extreme you are planning to build just hope you consider the ramifications.

I have an old dresser maybe that would fit in nice next to the door.

think of it as recycling :)
it could be worse...there's a few old tires on the powerline trail going up/down the west side of the mtn...
well it's a moot point now since someone took an ax to the door, sometime between thursday night and sat morning. nice mess left behind..way to go

I may try to drop off some decent material on Sunday if anyone has suggestions on what could be built there let me know?

Well, Ms Gravity, if you spotted the tires why didn't you haul them out of there. It's not too far to roll them to the road side where you can easily pick them up for proper disposal.
As for the mess left at the jump, that was there before when the jump did exist. I only left the support there so that it would be a bit easier to rebuild it. Besides after carrying the door up the hill (on my own), I didn't have a ton of energy left to carry a bunch of pickets out.
You honestly felt that the door wasn't too much of an eyesore??!? I thought that it made it look like a construction site pile of debris. You do not see such amateurish construction on trails in the Woodlot, Fromme or Seymour (or Vedder, Rossland, Nelson, etc.). For the most part, the trail structures on Burnaby Mountain are better conceived than this one.
Sarts, I think a jump would be fine there. There are perhaps a couple stringers just a short hike above the start of Nicoles. Probably enough raw materials that would be suitable for ladder rungs as well.

Thanks to whoever re-built the jump there. Much nicer rock and cribbing work.

Rode it yesterday afternoon.
Whoever built the first jump did an excellent job!! Big thanks from this rider for your hard work.
That trail is getting really buffed up, its a blast!

I rode Mel's today, and the bottom work looks good. The only problem I saw was that it was built with your basic 2x4's which A) are very slippery when wet and B) won't last very long. Thank-you to whomever built those ladders though.
I'd like to see the "shortcut" at the end of the trail eliminated. The erosion is rediculous! It won't be very long before that shortcut degrades right across the main trail, deeming the longer, and more sustainable route useless.
I have a beef with the silly stunt built on Mel's between Gearjammer and the end of the trail. It's made of garbage, it's dangerous, it's already falling apart, and it's on a multi-use cross-country trail!
Once I have some free-time again, I'd truly like to deal with some of this stuff. I will.

Ryan cant agree more about the erosion at the shortcut. I was going to wait until the weather improves to get some work done. I thought about putting some yellow caution tape up for the short term but probably would not last long.
