Sorry if this has been posted before.

Approximatley, How deep do you dig wholes for supports on free standing structures?

Such things that would have to go through more stress or movement (forces against them) .

Such as good sized kickers like the ones you folks got on Air Supply.

Or a 6-10 foot free standing structure in general.

thanks for any help.

p.s.- would you pack it in with rocks wedging the support in the ground and covering with dirt and repeatedly packing?

dig as deep as you can! probably after like 2 feet you wont be able to dig much, depending on where you are. but get as much as you can under, the farther in the ground it is the more stable it is.

and once you dig that hole, fill it with big hefty rocks and dirt. that ensures that it wont go anywehre for a loooooong time.

good luck

heehee get a special shovel for digging fence posts.with one of them, you could almost dig to china!

hehe anyways,i got a little carried away there.
dig untill you can no longer dig.definately get way past all the rot up top, then dig down as deep into the "gold" or clay-ish dirt.
Pack in with rocks/gold dirt, stomp it down..hope that it rains before you ride it,and you'll pretty much have a concrete foundation holding you're supports in.

^ holy sketch...
good rule of thumb is 1/3 height in the ground, so if you got a 10 foot pole, dig 3.3 feet., with 2 feet being minimum.
you obviously wouldnt apply something like this to 2x4's but then again no sane person would use 2x4's for posts, but thats what the pic above looks like....

If you think that's sketchy, don't ride here. I've seen plywood used as supports.

I say 2 feet minimum. If you hit a large rock and can't go farther, put the post in, fill in the hole pack it down and stary building up by piling huge rocks around the pole thenpile dirt.

its costing $$$1000's to build its been paid for by Freeborn bikes in England and sponsors like DMR, MBUK magazine, etc.

its still under construction but its taken months to clear the wood and build the trails

theres alot more planned...

do a search for "esher shore" on pinkbike/photos

the whole trail has taken months, it's still not quite done but very close, all the stunts are from dead fall no brought in wood.........

price of supplies was basically screws and some ruined drill bits.

that stunt took about 2 days finding the dead fall hauling it over, splitting the rungs and all that good stuff, I wish we had cedar:(

what she looks like right now http://filebox.vt.edu/users/cglime/Roanokeriding/snow1.jpg

same trail, stunt was built by a different builder, about 5 people have helped on the building
