i had a rm6 w/ monsters that was pushing 50lbs. since then my bike lost almost 10 lbs...it sure is easier to throw around.

i got used to the bike. i like it because it is so stable over big gaps. I got stronger and was able to move it in the air

yes, i got used to it after a bit too, but i still dont miss those monsters.

i love my monsters they can take all the abuse you give them and still work just fine. I only sold the frame and i kept all my parts. i will probably never ride another fork. I wont ride a new monster. I have a 2002:D

You must have a lot of real heavy parts on that machine. My Stab Primo with '03 Monsters, dh tubes etc tips the scale @ 49lbs.

Actually - I only run 2.35 tires, if you got the big fat 3.0s then that'll cancel out the difference in the Monsters at least...

That Banshee is way up there, 50 and perhaps heavier. Only light part is the Shiver, everything else is just beef.

My Banshee with shivers is right around 55lbs. Damn heavy. You should see me try and get that beast on my roof rack. I swear it's going to crush me one day.

My Banshee with 02 Shiver and mag 30's is 48-49 lbs. I run Mich 2.8 front and rear with dh tubes, hope e4's. Cromo handle bars big heavy DJ seat. It is easier to handle then my Giant ever was. I can throw it around with little effort.

I've got a 44 pound Banshee Scream. It sure as hell doesn't feel like it though. I think the idea of a Heavy Mountain bike is a myth.

My bike weighs 44 pounds, I was on the tail of my buddy on a mid 30's hardtail on the trails the other day. I don't know about other bikes, but the Scream really does feel pretty light. It's got insane balance, and even just dead lifting it, it feels pretty light.

u should stand back and re-read that... it sounds very funny...

i hate to tell u this but no matter how much your Banshee "feels light" to ride, it still weighs what it weighs...

its not like theres some magic genie that allow your bike to become "lighter" then it is...

haahahahaah......

haahahahaah......

not true. My 47.5 lbs scream feels considerably lighter than my 42.5lbs Big Hit DH did.

It's all in the angles. My 54 lbs '02 Shore felt lighter than most bikes. 54lbs!!

My Banshee right now is 47.5 with Monster, lots of raceface and lightweight wheels (rhyno/Mag/King) and lightweight Maxxis tires with XC tubes. My Big Hit with profiles, michie, heavier wheels, etc was 44. haha.

My new bike should be under 40 and should feel like it, too :D

FullMonty
10-07-2003, 08:22 PM
I think a HUGE part of how heavy a bike feels is in the wheels. That's a lot of weight spinning around, and it does not want to move off of it's current axis of rotation. Not to mention that a much lighter wheel accelerates much quicker.

NickS
10-07-2003, 08:26 PM
yep its all in the rotational parts.

Jay Hoots told me that geoff gulevich's scream with monsters weighs just less than half of him and that he weighed about 128lbs. I believe that is heavy:)

My brodie diablo with jr T's and dual doubletracks is 45 lbs.

Captain Stabbin
10-07-2003, 08:57 PM
My V10 is about 55 pounds...i can handle it well. Its got Shivers...Steel spring...ESD25s with dual Michelins and DH tubes...hoping to get dual 2.8 when it all wear down.

BAC5.2
10-07-2003, 09:04 PM
WBC is correct. It's all about angles and body position.

While I do have "light" wheels (Rhyno XL to Marzocchi 20mm and Hadley W/ Ti), tires (NBX 2.3, 650g) and regular tubes (Spec. TR racing front, Bontrager rear). The bike feels light in the climbs and on the decents.

WBC speaks the truth. I wonder if a Morphine rides lighter than it is....

My .243 is 28 pounds right now.. There is not a part on it im scared of breaking. I hate heavy bikes, I used to have a 43lb hardtail and a 55lbs dualie. I droped 10lbs off of the fully and even more off of the hardtail.. so much nicer for me.

You guys ride your heavy bikes, Ill ride my 28 pound bike hard:) Some things dont need to be beefy.. If I get a lighterish frame my bike will be 26-27.. 1/2 of the weight of most of yours;) I just dont see the point of a heavy bike at all? with my easton/raceface/thompson/mavic/maxxis build up im liking my bicycle:D

I'm going with full "race" spec parts next yr:)

Weight is weight man, if your bike weighs 50 lbs, you still have to push or pedal all the extra weight up the hill, just because it feels lighter, doesn't mean the wieght magically dissapears. The Scream pedals well, so it might be easier to climb than a VPS or a Big Hit, but it is still a heavy frame.

10-08-2003, 02:57 PM
My Bullit is 49 lbs due to Profile cranks and bars, 03 Monster, 2.6 Gazza's, and DH tubes. It handles great and took no time to get used to, other than the sheer effort required to move all that mass down the trail. I would like a lighter bike, but I haven't found light parts I am confident in enough to run. I will probably get some alum bars, regular tubes and leave it alone. I am not about to spend the $$$ to get ti spindle, ti shock spring, or any other super expensive diet parts.

I never said it WAS lighter, I said it FEELS and RIDES lighter. The bike is easy to get in the air, easy to move around in the air, easy to balance and maneuver. Of course it's still 44 pounds, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Is this really THAT hard to understand?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to break out the crayons and spell it out for you.

Maybe this is the comment Tonestar was referring to. I can see how it'd feel light to ride - but how can it feel lighter than its weight to lift? Better get out the crayons! :D :D

I'm a buff mother fucker, lol. I was just saying that 44 pounds is still not that heavy for what the bike is.

some dude
10-08-2003, 06:31 PM
Well 44# IS pretty light for a Scream especially for a He-Man like yourself! :D Unless I was racing - I'd take beef over lightweight any day.

BAC5.2
10-08-2003, 06:41 PM
There you go dude. That's exactly the way I feel. Beef is where it's at. Why run super light stuff that'll break all the time.

The only override on that is wheels, I like my wheels light and am willing to true them a few times a season if I have to.

welcome to 2003... Pig bikes are old news...

everyone has been there and done that... now the switch is on to "light yet strong"...

ergo parts like race face's Diabolous line are a prime example...

the diabolous is also a prime example of why it will be some time before the light AND strong will be prevalent. BIG BLING. Sure, you could probably build a bike of near-equivalent strength to the scream and shave four pounds, say... but it would cost you a zillion dollars...

Weight of a bike doesn't mean too much, my big hit is 47 pounds and Im 130 and 5 foot 6. I can bunny hop it 20 inches and can keep up with some guys on hardtails, you learn how to use the heavy bike to its advantage when hoping, example would be preloading the suspension. It also makes you a lot stronger with a big bike, I can bench 30 more pounds now after 4 months of using my big hit.

Seriously, though. Talking about components, say. A raceface diabolous bar/stem is going to be a LOT more dough than, well, most anything else. It all comes down to that old axiom:

Strong
Light
Cheap

Pick two.

"It also makes you a lot stronger with a big bike, I can bench 30 more pounds now after 4 months of using my big hit."

totally agree

you don't need the gym when you ride a heavy bike, even on the street! it works your whole body so much keeping the bike going where you want it to..

my big hit was 46lbs and rode real quick once over 10mph but it was fine on skinnys at low speed the weight pins it in place until YOU want to move it

my Banshee Scream is knocking on 49lbs and that's with a 03 Super T Pro, not a Monster, etc.

but its got DMR cromoly 3-piece cranks, doubletrack rims, RF Diablous 31,8 bar/ RF D post, 2.6 Gazzolodis, etc. so cant complain all totally solid kit

it rides lighter than the Big Hit like people said it would. it feels strange to me having ridden FSR for last 2 years, going ride the esher "north shore" park today for first time on Scream ;)

Aiming for 40 pounds next season. I figure if I get rid of the dual 3.0s and DH tubes I could save about 6 pounds if I go with a Michelin UST setup with UST Mag30s. Drop the Super T, go with a Dorado or Shiver, I'll probably gain there. Get rid of the Block 8 bar and stem, theres 2 pounds... Go with an easton EA50, I should be around 43 pounds at that point. New pedals that don't weigh another 2 pounds (block 8s are cracking), could save a pound with some easton pedals. I'll be happy at 41 - 42lbs.

56lbs. Scream. Monsters Avy 3.0s. Sure shes heavy. But she tracks well, flys well and works. See there are few places where I could compromise and go lighter...Go to an 888, and non chromo cranks. Wheels cant go lighter. maybe smaller tires, but i wanna go to a chromo bar. so id still be at 50.
