There is a newly cut logging road that is going straight through Hekyll & Jekyll at the Woodlot in Maple Ridge. On our way out, we stopped and talked with the Woodlot manager and were told the following:

1) There's going to be logging activity in the vicinity of Hekyll & Jekyll.

2) There's work going on around Hoots and the '5 Points'.

The manager wanted us to post here to get the word out to riders to use EXTREME caution while riding in this area for the next month (ie. until 1 November). He told us a story about the last time active logging was going on in the area; a mountain bike rider came close to being felled by a tree that a was being brought down by a logger. To make a long story short, it was hinted that this is the kind of incident that could have a tragic ending for the individuals involved in addition to jeopardizing the status of the mountain bike trails out here.

So, on behalf of the people involved in the management of the Woodlot and the maintenance of the trails, please use common sense while riding up there until there are no signs of active logging. It would be appreciated if you stay off of Hekyll & Jekyll when you visit, if only to eliminate any chances that could give rise to any misunderstandings.

Whatever portions of the trail are damaged during the logging process will be rebuilt and / or revised when it's safe to do so.

Thanks,
Cory

You might also want to post this over on the trail conditions board.

That's true, although we didn't ask specifically about Quick Hit. There is work being done about 100 feet south of the trail.

The main thing we want people to do is to be very careful when riding up there for the next bit and don't do anything that places them in an active logging area.

I can confirm that a guy was taken out off of blood donor a couple of tuesdays ago by ridge meadows SAR. I saw them as I was pushing up. Possible neck injury but the guys friends were really chill and I don't think he would go and sue anyone. There's signs at the bottom that warn that you're riding at your own risk there. Shouldn't that cover the owners ass? (BCIT)

maybe the loggers will put tranny's on H&J...... the drops are hideous on that trail. Too bad Platinum is the only trail that uses them.

Nope.. nothing will cover the owners ass, period. Even if you sign a paper saying you are responsable for yourself on his land, you could still technically sue the owner of the land.. (which is why the liability issues on trails can't be solved with paper work)

I didn't even know BCIT owned that land.

it looks like H&J might be spared - I hope so, its got great flow toward the end

Hey,

I love riding the woodlot and have the benefit of inside information available to me. I study forestry at BCIT and one of our primary study sites is the Woodlot. Give me a couple days and I'll see what I can dig up about this. I'll try to find out how long it is going to be, if they know they are cutting into trail and anything else that could be relevent.

Peace
Ry

I appreciate your enthusiasm about getting 'insider info' but, honestly, why would Roald (the manager) deceive us or beat around the bush? The guy's been straight up with us whenever we've asked anything about the Lot.

We've known for a couple of years that the lower parts of the Woodlot were going to be logged so it's no big surprise that it's happening now. As I mentioned in my first post, whatever parts of Hekyll that are damaged during the logging process will be rebuilt when it's safe to do so.

There's no need for people to freak out or to go on investigative crusades or worry about the short term future of the Woodlot - it's a working forest and we've got a pretty good relationship with the people who run it. All they ask is that mountain bikers act appropriately when areas in and around the riding trails are being logged.

Yah cool. That sounds right. I've have good relations with him and my instructors. I dunno, I'll ask and see if they say anything else though

UPDATE:

The trail Shotgun was being logged today while we were up at Woodlot (Friday, 10 October). For safety reasons, please stay off the trail entirely until the loggers are finished with their work. I'll post another update when the trail is good to go.

Also, just because they're in on Shotgun right now doesn't mean that they're not logging Hekyll & Jekyll. That trail should not be ridden until further notice either.

Peace,
Cory

No shit eh?!! Platinum F***'n rocks!! To bad the builders of H&J didn't know about transitions and the like. To bad trail building progresses just like riding....

that's good to hear he's not too badly injured. Switching back to the hardtail can be quite an adjustment. Peter was his name I think? I hope he heals up quickly. :)

Hey all

I've posted here before, I'm the guy in forestry at BCIT. I was out in the Woodlot today, Wed. Oct.15, doing a survey traverse and heard my instructor say the logging will continue at least until the end of month. Don't hold me to that as schedules in the forest industry change often on a daily basis. I'm not kidding. My program has had three sched. changes in the past 4 weeks to accomadate for various operations at various sites we study at. The logging could last longer or could be wrapped up very soon. It's very hard to tell.

Ok. I understand that a bunch of the jabs on this thread have been attempts at humour, but please stop getting away from the topic.

If you know myself or Rich then send us e-mails or phone us and bash us where we can defend ourselves. Otherwise, STFU and keep this thread about the current logging activities at the Woodlot.

hey robot - i can't speak for anyone else, but i have met rich - super nice guy, great builder/rider and extremely concerned about his trails.

my comments were met purely in a joking manner, and if they offended either you or rich, i apologize :(

The roll in to the gravel pile at the bottom of Hoots has been dug up. The line is closed (and blocked off).

Please use the ride around to the left.

Rode some stuff here today. Shotgun has been logged at the um, log ride. Unless you feel like hiking over a bunch of crap, take the skidder down. It actually isn't that bad, but it sucked.
