Just got back from the Metro Jam BMX contest in Kerrisdale - I have three words - OH MY GOD!
What those guys can do on a bike is insane. With the not so subtle cross over that is taking place between BMX and mtb biking any of the pro mountian bike want -to-be's had better look at what these guys are doing and be prepared to step things up.
We have seen a very basic beginning with Berrecloth but if/when someone like Mirron or Osato decided to take the leap to 26" wheels our sport will be redefined.

ruben didn't compete, osato took it in pro street. van homan is the man, and jim czielinski should have taken best trick.

man, now I'm pissed I didn't go, bmx street/park has flown off the handle in the past year, it's been stepped up so much....I dig mtb's but man, they make mtb street riding look silly....

It is, berrecoth is good. But not that great compared to the best BMXers. It would be sweet for one of the best BMXers to come and show everyone up. It would be more than embarrasing.

Look at duncan...he's not even trying that hard (and isn't top10 anymore either).
When I hand my bike off to some bmx friends of mine (still above average skill) it's silly to see just how much better they are than almost all mtb street riders...and that's with 3 pedal strokes to get accquainted...

I see the cross-over..... I think that it is progesssion. Its like DH and XC racers have to ride road bikes to train.... freeriders have to work at DJ's and use street skills to be truly competitive.
Just my babble that probably doesn't make any sense.

What was the best trick, and what should have been the best trick? Just curious.

I personally don't lose a winks sleep over the whole bmx-mtb thing...it should and HAS to happen(the interaction and learning from etc...).....but I always have been, and pretty much expect to always be "MTB is for the Mountains".
A bmx can do things a MTB can't....a MTB can do things no bmx can.
But with EITHER ride....you and I can always be amazed and thats awesome:cool:

Hahaha yeah BMX riders own the heezy. My favorite segment from killing time is when the 15 year old bmx kid gets on Aaron Chase's ride and owns up the place. Thing is..they WILL pull the same amazing shit on a dual 24" or even 26" ride. Thus proving it is infact us mtb street riders who suck, not the rides themselfs ;)

I couldnt agree more, I cant imagine the possibilites of a 26" rider with the style of say Wessel and the flow of Sheley........redifined is an understatement:)

berrecloth is a pretty decent bmx'er himself.

the best trick was a double peg up the rail to barspin off the top. jim did soooo many crazy tricks... toothpic to over, over to pedal crooked, crank arm slide, switch/opposite crackarm slide, pedal grind....

He was a sponsored BMXer and wanted to change things up. I've heard stories about him being a prick but could be just rumors. He lost his Diamondback sponsorship, then started mountain biking. But compared to like Ryan Nyquist my personal favortie BMXer he can't compare. Of course he's good. But not top out of BMXers.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again. Mountain biking is called Mountain biking because of MOUNTAINS. Taking tricks and style and stuff from BMX and other things is cool because it gives us something to do, but the day i see mountain bikers having an indoor *or even outdoor* competettion thats equall to what BMXers are doing.....ill really wonder what the point is. Id rather have mountain biking progress to doing sicker steeper lines down cliffs, and building crazier stunts and all.....but, it seems to be crossing over more and more
Hmm...just curious - hasn't Wade a background in BMX ?? Remember having read it somewhere...anyway.
I think that all this discussion about to where the "Big Bikes" belong may have us forget what our original plan (hopefully still) is: Having fun and doing things that you never even have dreamt of...
It's about the ride.
Peace and may the future hold for you a nice and comfy rate of progression - with or without the BMXers. :D

I just assumed that everyone rode BMX before MTB just because of the cost factor. A nice BMX is like $400-$600. Most kids can get their hands on one. But a nice MTB is minimum $1200.
I grew up riding BMX and freestyle stuff and I just figured that most other people rode BMX too.
yet when I'm in a parking lot at the trails and am just fartin around and do something like a rock-walk (180 endo to 180 wheelie), people are all impressed and you feel sillly cuz it was just a little rock-walk.
There will be more and more cross-over riders and it will only help propell the sport.
I personally would like to see the freeride scene move away from the huge drops to more stylish fluid trick laden freeride stuff. (like the 360 drop in the NWD4 teaser)

On my way home I rode past the Kerrisdale Arena on my mtb. Got heckled. Sometimes I think BMX is sweet, sometimes I think its gay.

I too recently saw some waht of the future of mtn biking on my recent trip down to LA..
Me and neil sanders were riding the Hollywood Sports complex skate park sessioning it having fun talking to the local BMX'ers and we all come to the topic of mtn biking an bmxers converting and such like duncan and berrecloth...so 2 guys wanted to try my mtn bike one of them being this nut doing back flip tail whips out of the 5 ft quarter to this wedge hip tranny.. so he gets on and with in 15 minutes, he was ripping..
He jumps the same quarter as the one hes back fliped and tail whips and gets on the seat first try, i was in complete Awe had we given him th ebike for another 30 mins or so he would have landed them, he nailed bar spins and almost a truck driver (360 bar spin) the first try..The second guy still amazes me with his clean bar spins and near landed tail whip attempts and a sick one footed flatty second jump on the box jump. i was completely amazed but I had to leave to get back to neils house and start packing so i could come home.
Those 2 guys were completely hitched on MTB after and probably will get a mtn bike really soon..so watch out for those So Cal boys...:thepimp:
