I really need to find some leg armor with a closed back section. The Beastgear XXX Fullwraps (thanks for the link sAFETY), Roach Indy Legs, and Rockgardn Freerider Knee/Shin are on the short list. My legs are big so I am concerned with fit, and of course no shops around here stock a decent selection of armor. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have some of the Freeride dianese for sale if you're interested... they have padding all the way around... I can ship, PM me for details.

hoots have the best protection hands down, just expensive and not the best ventilation.

i have dainese freestyles - they're pretty good protection but they're more designed for impact protection than pedal bites etc. - i just like them because they're really light and breathe really well. i still get cuts one the backs of my ankles occasionally because they don't come down very far.

edit: stay away from the dainese if your legs are big and/or long. i'm 5'5" and i wear size medium.

doesn't roach make some hardshell ones now? i'd look into those.

mb racing in prince george has the roach hardshell in stock, and the back wraps all the way around my fairly large calves no problemo.

I use the Hoots Freeride leg and shin combo, the shin actually has a plastic calf plate that gives really good protection, plus the straps are really long. Check them out www.hootsgear.com

Hoots Freeride knees and shins. I assume you want a closed back section for protection - Hoots is an open design, but they have a removeable back plate thats way tougher than any other closed back protection. I'm not kidding - I would have a broken leg right now if I wasn't wearing Hoots last weekend. My leg got tangled up in my frame when I messed up a double - all I ended up with was a bruise where the back plate ends which is a lot better than a broken bone.

hoots protect really well.

a few people on nsmb have said that one of the 661 padsets
are the same as the hhots. just a ton cheaper.and a different color.

hoots and beastgear aren't too easy to find here in the usa. either order them from the net yourself or go through your local bike shop. most stores do stock roach though. at least they do here in pennsylvania.

good luck

How do the Hoots pads connect together?

Josh, do you know any good shops in northwestern PA that might be worth checking?

I tried on some of the new Roach hardshell pads... They are HUGE! We're talking a good 3-4" above the knee, all the way right down to your ankle. They felt like casts on my legs when I gave 'em a try - although I'm sure they would be better after they get broken in. If I hadn't just bought a set of Dainese legs (oh so light and airy,) I would definitely pick a set of these beasts up. This armour is the very definition of burly.

Roach indys are good, but if you can, try and pick up that new roach stuff. It looks sweet

The new Roach are huge. Even the large fit me and I've got long, thick legs.

Just looking through the new MEC catalogue and they have 'Calf Guards' in there (page 30 if you've got one handy, $9.50/pr).
Never seen them but looks like they attach to the back of your leg armour and cover your calf. Might be an option if you already have pads that are lacking any sort of leg back protection.
