What would be a better choice to learn the jumps? I have an older BMX bike that I've tried out a few times and it feels totally uncomfortable. I always go back to my mtn bike. I like the idea of the BMX bike because it is nearly indestructable but it is so different.

do what's comfortable.

I'd say MTB, but you might not feel comfortable doing it.

I am no expert on dirt jumps, as I fly like a rock, but I have friends that seem more like eagles. Their low down is the best is a hardtail 26". Full suspension soaks up too much when you try to pump off the back of the jump for the next one. Steep tight jumps suck with full suspension, though longer shallower ones are ok.
Most bmx's won't let you run a nice big fork, nor easily change gears.

I noticed my suspension soaking up some of the pop off jumps. I haven't even come close to mastering the BMX bike to land smooth. Instead, I come down like a brick shithouse that hasn't been pumped out.:D

bmx will jump better.. but when the jumps get a bit sketch my 24" mtbish bike jumps a lot better. my bike flows.. the bmx's get sketchie if the jumps arn;t perfect. i rode a bmx for a while and i could jump just as good on it.. it jsut wasn't as stable and fun as the 24" mtb. doi whatever is most comfortable

I used to jump on a BMX, before I got into MTB, and all it took for me was a week or two riding the BMX again, and I got used to it. I just tend to adapt my riding style to the bike I'm on. That may or may not work for everyone.
