I have a Shiver DC (190mm) and I find it bottoms somewhat easily. I'd like it to be stiffer for drops, but I don't want to lose much small-bump performance. So basically, I want to make the fork more progressive. The impression I have is that increasing the oil height is the best way to make the fork more progressive. Is this correct?

My fork has stock oil (I assume 7.5wt). I have yet to measure the current oil height ... does anyone know what the factory setting is?

To make the fork more progressive for a 155lb rider (w/o gear), what should I put the oil height to? I want it to hold the ground decently for dh, but it also shouldn't bottom easily on drops (often to flat). My LBS only has 10wt oil, but I assume that's ok to use to increase the oil height.

Could someone also go over the procedure to measure oil height? I assume you take off the top caps, pull out the springs, and compress the fork? Anything I need to know about taking apart the fork? I haven't taken this fork apart before.

Also, my friend has a Shiver SC and he'd like to make it more progressive. Does anyone have experiences with varying oil heights and weights?

my friend told me his did the same so he added 5mm of oil to each leg. and i think he's got 10wt oil cuz his shiver is way more plusher then mine.

By adding more oil the fork will become more progressive and ramp up faster. Adding oil is what you want to do. Give Mulletron a PM and ask him, he is very knowledgable and runs Shivers.

I would imagine you just add like 5mm of oil until you are not happy, then take out a few (like 2-3mm). I would imagine that for your weight and riding style you will have to experiment a bit. Of course once you get it right for you, you should make a mental note or write down the amount of height from teh top, so you can eventually re-build your forks and know how much oil to put in.

I am not sure of the measurements (Whether you leave the springs in or not). The measurement is usually from the top of the stantion (at full stroke I believe -- ie all the way compressed) to the top of the oil in the leg.

PM Mulletron he knows his shit !

If you've never had your oil height checked, it's probably low.

80mm for someone up to 170lbs, 70mm for someone over 170lbs.

It's not recommended to go more than 10% lower than recommended, which would make the minimum about 65mm.

To verify, check it out here (http://www.marzocchi.com/eng/spa/products/mtb/tips/2002/livello_olio.asp).
