r poo........i crashed today sending the bike in a tree, picked the biatch up and the lever is hanging....thats kewl n' all cause there designed that way, but after installing the lever reach ball back into the cup( lever body) there was a fair inch of play at the end of the lever. And only the slightest touch the lever would fall back out!! i would understand the play within the cup and ball if this happened numerous times but thats the first!! has this happened to anyone else....what will i need to fix??
even tho u have a bmw, when u crash it bad, it s junk,
i wouldnt comment on the hayes.
if it has a serious play although u fix it, ask lbs about it or get new lever i say.
dont let a brake piss u off.

Do a search on those brakes here on NSMB and you'll find that what has happened to you is a common occurence.
There's a snap ring that hold the lever's retention washer in place. Your washer is almost certainly bent beyond usefulness and will need to be replaced (try and find a stronger/thicker washer and make it fit)
This is a "feature" it seems of the HFX-9's

Sir Falloffalot knows of what he speaks.
Happened to me. The ball pulled through the washer, and made a cone shape out of it. I took off the snap ring, took out the washer, flattened the washer with a hammer, unscrewed the plunger, put the plunger through the washer (flipped washer around), put the washer back in, put the retention clip back in, and then screwed the plunger back into the lever. Took about 20 minutes to figure out and do, and the brake is now like new.

Trust me the brakes are crap. Get rid of them.
Its happened to me a couple of times. Here's the fix you need to find a thicker washer, you canactually almost fit one that is twice as thick. The washer that I used was 50% thicker and the ID was a little smaller. Problem was that the OD was to big, took out the dremel tool and machined down the OD to fit in the housing. No problems since.
Another problem that you will run into is that the adjustment HEX screws will become sloppy. Your brake lever effective starting postion will change throughout your ride. You'll need to use some loctite.
