I was at work today, for my lunch break I figured I would ride over to safeway to grab some food. I didn't have a lock so I just grabbed one of the demo locks from the front of the store. I rode over, locked my bike, and went inside. When I came back I put the key in the look, turned it with almost no force, and the head of the key ripped clean off, luckily I had another key. I tried to get the remaining part of the first key out with no tools, after that failed I tried to turn the lock with the other key, they key bent like butter. I figure the keys where sitting in the sun all day? Even the head of the key I could easily bent in my hands.

I figured I had to cut the lock.. Luckily it was only the cable version, not the U-lock. I phoned my boss up and asked him to come down with some tools. He brought a silver breifcase with all of his biking tools in it. With many weird looks, we had the lock split apart in under two minutes. Everyone thought we were theifs. Then went back to the shop. Amazed, we figured out how to break this lock in only a few seconds.. If I had the U-lock on my bike, my bike would still be there..

Moral of the story is, dont use a Cable lock;)

actually, an angle grinder mounted with a cutting disc will cut through a u-lock in about one minute, even a kryptonite.

no bike shop should be without one. :P

and a pair of bolt cutters cuts through cable locks just as quickly.

Yah I thought about that after. They could easily take a wheel if you had QR and not through axle.

I have had to cut through 2 locks in my day. Used a hack saw, took like a minute. Kind of sad really.

Hmm, even the u locks are easy enough to break. Use a small hydrolic car jack, the type you keep in the trunk if you have to change a car tyre. Stick it in between the sides of the u lock, somethings gotta give first, and it wont be the jack.

A small jack won't do it, Kryptonite U locks can with stand a huge amount of pressure whereas small car jacks its usually 1 ton ish (as it is only used to hold up one corner of the car and the jack head is usually to big anyway; spreading the weight over to big an area.

I lost a Kryptonite key and smoked that lock in about 30 seconds with my car jack.

All you thieves taking notes on this?

Locks are a waste of cash IMO. Just don't leave your bike alone. Bring it with you where ever you go, if they tell you to get out just say fuck you this bike is worth blah blah blah and there is bike theives chasing me.
