Can you manual?
coast along, pull the bars and shift your weight back like you were going to manual, but stay a tad "crouched".
Pull the bars up to your chest and "jump", sucking your legs in and push the bike forward to clear whatever it is you are clearing.
Note: You will find it easier to learn this by actually trying to clear something...for some reason it is hard to do this with nothing in front of you, some kind of mental thing. Start with a brick or sidewalk and work your way up.
first of all u have to work on pulling up the front end as high as you can, it takes a while to get the hang of it. this next part is the key: you need to pull the front end up high enough so that when you suck up with your feet, the front end doesnt just come slamming back down again. the closer to perpendicular you can get your bike to the ground the better and higher you will be able to hop. i hope that makes sense, that is the most simple way i can describe it

yeah that all makes sense. i guess that's it - i'm crappy at manualling even though my bike could have been designed to do do nothing else. i need to get the front up higher (thanks rydogg) and i'll practice with something in front of me (thanks mullet)
haha eddie, if you would ride more instead of spending all your money on your rig and sitting around bragging about how pimp it is, then you might get more practice ;)
this is why my bike will always own yours and clay's. :thepimp:

ah well at least i didn't have to wait too long for that!
your bike's quite nice i guess, but…
a. i ride every day, break stuff and gouge stuff. just can't get the hang of j-hops
b. that's not all my money. i also spend tons on drugs and fast women. the rest i waste.

yeah perfect. lots of stuff i didn't get, like twisting the grips etc. all makes sense. can't wait to get home and try
when i try to teach people to j-hop i tell them to move their hands in a circular motion. starting at bottom of the circle and moving backwards
- back - up - forward -

Think of the arm motion as starting at... say 9:00 on a circle, then pulling the bars up to 11:00, then pushing back down to 9:00, but twisting your hands a bit forward on the grips this time. While you are pushing back down with your hands, pull up with your feet to let the rear end raise.

yea its a circular motion. also the higher you want to go, the lower and sooner you preload your body and your circular motion is bigger and almost slower. but the kick is important to get the rear end up. keep practicing dude it will come.

eddie - you can bunny hop, just not "j-hop," correct?
for what its worth, i've found that while i can "bunny hop" just over 2 feet, i don't know how to "j-hop." i have 2 different styles of hops though, one for high speeds, (or clearing low, but long obstacles, or clearing a curb, etc...) and, one for low speeds (such as upping onto a wall in our backyard).
either way though, i found it easier to learn how to do the hops on a rigid bike. if you don't have a rigid available, try to find one as light weight, and with as little travel as possible.
hopping is very different on my trials bike than it was hopping on my old hardtail with 5" fork, than it is hopping on my devinci chester with 6" rear and 5" front... some of it is weight, some is bike size, and, a lot (i think) was suspension.
hopefully this helped, sorry if it was a waste of your time.

you'll get it quick eddie.
Like mullet said, something infront really helps.
I learned quickly with cardboard boxes. You screw up, big deal, no damage.
So get out in a parking lot with some boxes and mash'em up.
/hijack/
What did you think of the evil with the weird 6" whatever fork you had on it? I've found a deal on a 8" fork that i'm afraid to pass up. Not for an everyday fork, just for DH. What do you think?
/hijack/
I hear riding a bmx helps:rolleyes:
In all seriousness, just follow everyone elses example.
