How do I remove stripped nipples from my wheel? Is there a special tool? Some nipples on my wheel are so stripped that they appear to be round instead of a square shape.
I have tried to get at them from the top, but the spoke tension is so high that it strips the nipple from the top end too. What is the best way to remove it?
Thanks for the help

ahh almost all my nips are stripped too. they are the most anoying part eh. i think the best way to remove them would be to take off the tire and tube and rim strip, and then you can use a screw driver to undo the threaded part form the top. you might hafta use needlenose pliers to hold the stripped part.

try to use the spoke wrench but if it doesn't work get a flat head screw driver and vice grip for more leverage to remove it from the top, you could also jsut cut the spoke and put a new one in seen as that only costs about 50 cents

grab the nipple with a pair of vice grips at the bottom of the stripped spoke as tight as you can get the pliers and and then twist. either the nipple will come loose or it will break then they come off easy. hope this helps.

Yea, I tried to get at it from the top, but either the spoke is sticking out from the top of the nipple, or if it isn't then i use a flat-head screw-driver (it might have been too thin) and then i stripped it from the top too.
If I cut the spoke, then wouldn't that mess up my other spokes?
(For the future) how do i prevent stripping the nipples?

By having a properly set of professionally tensioned wheels. No offence but if you have spokes popping out above the nipple head then whomever is truing/building your wheel(s) doesn't know what they're doing.

None taken. Cause I am the one that did it=/ Hopefully as soon as i get $80 i can buy another back wheel. But even then, I will still want to true my wheel when i have a bad hit to prevent my bike from being in the shop for 4 days

I think you should stop playing with them if you're stripping them :|

Cut the spoke and replace it. Easiest way IMO.

... this is a little crazy but you could drive down to utah find the drop that bender does in double down and explode your wheel.... or try a crecent wrench, seems to work for almost any thing

If I do that, will it not mess up my wheel/hub/other spokes?

It would be no worse than breaking a spoke on the trail.
