View Full Version : parking lot on mountain highway
rode fromme today.. and theres a parking lot being built at the water tower.
i call it right now: this is going to be an absolute failure. first of all, it doesnt seem to be big enough. also i think people will still park on the streets. i am thinking some people will not want to ride back up to the parking lot after they ride down, come back up the paved mtn highway, etc... it simply wont work. if its rainy and cold, who would want to ride back up the road after they have ridden up already and are covered in mud, and cold and all that bs.
i call it now- failure

a parking lot is a good idea. it keeps people off the roads. if you're riding fromme you're obviously not minding to ride up the switchbacks. i think you can handle the like 5 minute ride up to your car. i think a parking lot is alot better than no where to park at all. think about it mike, if they made you park wayyyyy down there at the bottom of mountain hwy youd have to climb all the way up the road to begin with. makes sense to me.

is it for sure a parking lot, or a turn-around area for pick-up/drop-off?
i have no way of telling for sure, but it looks like a parking lot to me

That would be a very good place to park.
Id hate to have to park at the very bottem of the mtn...
cant also help but notice that the grouse mountain truckers and city workers who were building the lot were all too lazy to shut the gate. they left it wide open, lock dangling there on a chain held to the chain by a pinner weld that could easily be broken if someone wanted it to break..
not very smart is it. they dont want people shuttling, yet they leave the gate open. i know that all users of the road cant have a key but the truckers can at least SHUT the gate so it doesnt look so inviting
Woot i think a parking lot up there of any size is better then no parking near Fromme at all...
i dont think it'll fail at all.. i just fear it will be to small...
oh its small alright
only time will tell, but my prediction is it will be a failure

Haha, I think it's a good idea, even if it's just a legal place to get dropped off. You're not even allowed to stop at the top of Mountain Highway by the gate.
And as for leaving the gate open, even if it is open, I wouldn't wanna shuttle up and find myself locked in when I get back. You don't know how long it'll be open.
you wont find yourself locked in if you get dropped off.. if you see traffic coming down, turn around
oh, yeah i might be speaking from experience

They are NOT building a parking lot. It's just a turnaround to be used for vehicles with 3 or more bikes.
Read tohe NV Council minutes which can be linked to from several places on this site or NSMBA site

I'm not sure how the drop off area is going to work. I normally don't bring anyone with me that isn't riding, so who is supposed to park the truck at the bottom and hike back up. A parking area would be more logical. Make it pay parking, there's lot's of room up there.
Before someone pipes up and says ride up from the bottom. Sorry, some of us just aren't that good. It takes me an hour and then some to get up to the 7th switchback. That's enough for me, and I feel I've earned the ride down. I have no interest in climbing on pavement for another 20 or so minutes just to get up there.

You're coming in kinda late. There' a whole other thread a couple of pages on in this Shore section on parking and what NV Council are doing.
Their theory on the turnaround is that a lot of mums and dads drop their kids off to go riding, plus groups of adult shuttlers. If there is 'no parking' on Mtn Hwy, all this traffic will still drive up there to drop people off, wait for riders to get gear out and bikes unloaded. You get the idea, a giant traffic jam.
So they are going to open the gate, put in a turnaround at the towers, and put a new gate just above the towers, for all those drop offs. That way they won't be blocking a residential area, creating bedlam.
BTW it's only a short term solution, they say.
They are encouraging people to park on Dempsey.

the difference from Dempsey to Mcnair is only around 5 mins.... I don't see what the big deal is ? In otherwords:
SUCK IT UP PRINCESS !
They should move it down further .....
More peeps in Whistler the better !

Actually I've been watching the Fromme parking topics from the very beginning and was aware of the drop-off area plans. I just don't understand them. I thought the problem on McNair was too many people parking. Having a drop off point does nothing to alleviate that. Those people still need a place to park.
If drop-offs were the problem here, it would be the homeowners at the top of Mtn. Highway doing all the complaining wouldn't it?
Just ride up from the bottom
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to add nothing.
what i dont see is how closing parking on the streets really helps.. people will just park lower down than before. look at riverside. with that lot closed people seem to just be parking further down the street

I think we all can agree that this "turnaround" does nothing to solve the problem at Fromme. Just wondering if all the people who replied to this thread are members of nsmba and perhaps have even emailed the council to voice their opionion.
I worry that it's going to get worse before it gets better.
As for me, I have about a 3.5 hour window for a ride during the week (finish work, ride, then go pick my boy up from daycare). If they keep moving the parking down the mountain (to the 2nd narrows bridge), I'm fucked! No more fromme riding for this kid!

Membership application and cheque went in the mail a couple of days ago.
Will the N.V. Council listen to people living outside of the N.V. District?

I asked that question to LeeLau and he said pretty much that everybody's comment counts. Imagine if the council was flooded with emails from pro-fromme riders?! That along with a huge influx of new nsmba members (I sent my application in this week too) would have an impact for sure!
