I've never had a good experience at Simon's, even if it was just to buy a tube, or simply to have a look around. I would never recommend going there to anyone.

I hear Dan at Ontop builds amazing wheels.

I got mine built at JH last August, and it's still in good shape. I maintain my wheels pretty often though

Dizzy took over the former Bike Cellar shop that's on 4th at Burrard. Prolly the best bet for a downtown shop. Otherwise visit Black Sheep Bikes on Cambie and 29th - the Spot guys build a mean wheel.

Kevin at Simon’s is the best wheel builder around. The man is very good, and very skilled. If you buy him a 6 pack, he'll give you special care, too. Beer talks.

Overtime: maybe I got a bad batch, and maybe it was before Mr. personality in the back could actually build, but my experience with those guys was beyond frightening. I bought a brand new wheel set from those guys, and the front self destructed within 20 minutes of my first ride, and on the very first impact. This is an impact on a Boxxer- something your shocks would have no trouble absorbing. Half of the spokes on the wheel, all limited to one side of the hub, sheared completely out of the eyelet. Co-incidence? No chance. Looking closer at the wheel, he used a 4-cross pattern.

Now, I am no wheel builder, but I've been buying pro built wheels all my life, for everything from road to cross-country to freeride. I've also taco'ed my fair share. The best built wheel always hold up to punishment by muckers like me.

Again, go to a guy who's been doing it for a while. Kevin has always built mine, and he stands behind his work.

Dude,
the 90's called...they want you back. they'll tell you what happened!

To answer the question, I'd say either The Cyclepath or try the crew at Westpoint (it's a little out of DT but a hell of a lot closer than Overtime!)

Simon at Simons is the epitmy of dick if i have ever met one.
He thinks he is the greatest thing to happen to biking since the wheel. always gave me attitude when i went there with a buddy after urban rides and he just doesn't know how to run a store...

One of the most successful people in the Vancouver bike business must know something about running a store.
I can vouch for the fact that LOYAL customers are always taken care of.
Low over head, fast service, parts always in stock for all, from courier's bikes to hard core free ride bikes.
Prices there are so good I hear nothing but complaints from the other shops.
Oh, and Kevin does build a very nice 321 which stands up to at least 3 to 4 rides a week including regular hits up to 12 feet.
Considering my lack of smoothness at times this is no mean feat.
Give them a try!

he just doesn't know how to run a store

It was started by Don W and another fellow who's name I forget. I replaced Don at West Point when he started Robson. Pippin hired me. They started BLT lights and moved to Nelson. His bro Keith, Rich M and Brian C took over the reins. That's where I first met Wade Simmons. He was a mechanic there. Used to wheelie around the store on customers bikes with his shop apron on, wrench in his teeth.

Keith left, other fellows left and -cash flow over extended ness killed the shop. I used to race for them in Vet expert. We had an awesome team there for a while. Bill, Mitch, Ralph, Pat, Trish that tall guy Brian C. We won a lot of races there for a couple years. One day it was shut down. Creditors moved in and next thing you know BLT is owned by Norco, one of the brands Robson sold a lot of. Guess Don still owned a bunch of the shop. Too bad too. Keith was one of the best bike mechanics I have ever known. He was one to fix things rather than replace. Always playing with stuff. Had a urinal in his Capri V6 powered VW van. Got cut off going to Interbike and that V6 got him back in front of the offending Volvo and the boys took turns peeing into the urinal which drained at the rear of the van. Volvo had his wipers on.
