why is it that people hate mtn bikers? Im not just talking about the obvious such as hikers on dual use trails. its everywhere. i went for a short ride around my neighbourhood with my fiance and people look at us like we are evil. we get yelled at by people walking for riding on the sidewalk and we get yelled at by car for riding on the road. what is it about bikes? it seems to me people are starting to see us the same way they see skateboarders. a nuisance. we have just as much right to be on those trails and the roads as anyone else. i shouldnt have to put up with being called "a fucking queer" and have people tell me to "get fuck off the road." i have even had rocks thrown at me on the trails by hikers. my fiance almost got ran over because of some asshole who decided that swerving and cutting us off was cool.
same with the trails. we went to the watershed lastweek and it was her first time there. we were crusing along and up come these joggers. i like to think i have a good trail ettiquite(sp?) so i pull off to the side and so does she. we let the joggers go by and we are friendly people so we say hi and can you believe it, one of the joggers told us to "fuck off, dont even bother." and not 30 seconds later we pass a group of riders and end up having a 20 minute conversation with them.

i just dont get the mentality of these people. they are everyones trails and everyone needs to respect other users whether it be hikers, bikers or whatever you do. you go to these trails to relax and get some excercise so just chill out and enjoy.

the part that pisses me off the most is i feel we have to basically take the shit and smile because we are the ones under the microscope. i dont think they will ban hiking on trails because of bad hikers but its coming to the point where they will ban biking on trails because of bad bikers.

everyone needs to do their part. its amazing to see people still litter on trails or almost run over hikers. 99% of bikers dont but unfortunately it only takes that 1% to fuck it up for the rest of us.

end of rant. just had to get some stuff off my chest. sorry.:)

i guess because the scene isnt as large in my part of the world then i dont have that problem as much... well sure ive been told to get off the footpath and stuff but thats only for being an idiot pissing everyone off likewise about the roads... its illeagle to ride without a helmet over here on roads and one day i was doing quite a nice wheelie outside my mates house and a cop came up i didnt see him and i was in the middle of the road and he was saying nice bike and stuff to e while i was wheeling and then he just drove off... its weird then you get other cops who will stop you check your bike over for reflecters and all that gay wank but meh...

What the hell is a kook? Sorry... I'm Scottish :o

Meh, I get it all the time, 'get your fucking bike off the train you fucking stoner', to which I reply 'No, sit down, I have every right to have my bike here'. I also have a lot of decent people come up and talk to me about my bike, and the type of riding I do. It's really interesting sometimes. When Keith (Builttoride) hit a 15ft drop there was a small crowd, and an old guy came up and shook our hands afterwards congratulating Keith on his 'Fantastic Leap'. Was pretty awsome.

I just like to ride my bike.

that old guy was dope!

I thought he was going to complain about something, and shout at me, i was really happily taken aback when he congratulated me, I wish there were more open minded people like him!

We just have to suck up any abuse we get cos otherwise the people we abuse will never forget it, and hate all bikers for it!

sucks but it's true!

some ppl are just like that
they see one person that does something wrong, and they automatically assume that everyone in that does that sport is the same way. but like someone on here already said, that 1% fucks it up for everyone

They don't ride bikes.

It isn't our loss, it is theirs, and I'm fine with that. I really don't see what people (like that, not everyone) that don't ride bikes do. There must be no ambition.

yeah, that happened once, we set up my large kicker infront of a fence and we were jumping it and stuff, and some guy stopped in his truck and got out and we were like... oh man... hes comin to yell at us. but he came and like shook our hands and stuff lol, then when he left he gave us the "thumbs up"

then the cops came and she told us it was cool what we were doing but we had to leave ( cause we had to cross a street to hit it.. lol)

Dude like 95% of skaters don't care if a biker goes in the park
Maybe if you were friends with them, then they wouldn't be mad at you, becuase I bet when they kick you out, they let some other bikers stay don't they. And if they won't be your friend then get cooler. Because if your not a little hoser skaters don't mind at all having bikers there, as long as you don't snake runs and be polite.

Do any of you even look at things from the other angle? I bet 75%+ of hikers don't care at all about bikers, there's just once in a while a hiker does something bad, and that's what your remember... situation sound familiar? It's just the way people are to remember the bad things, thats why hikers remember the 1/10 bad bikers, and bikers remember the 1/10 bad hikers... just keep being polite and you'll be accepted.

If they still don't understand you're not leaving, it's their loss.

Speed, fear and blame in one case.

My aunt fears bikes after a walk in the PoCo trails last July. She was walking her dog when 2 (17ish) boys came flying around a corner without warning. One just missed her and scared the crap out of her. She backed up as the other rider came around the corner. He swerved to miss her, almost running over her dog and then proceeded to hit a tree branch where he injured his shoulder. They were polite, but careless... and not all mountain bikers are polite.

She now sees mountain bikers in a different light no matter what I say. She knows it was less than .001%... but everytime she sees a bike, she remembers.

I know what u mean. For all you locals if u know the flower wall we were sessioning that one time while headding to dt for some urban and we would get somebody to stop the car quickly so the person could go. One guy stopped and watched us for a little while (he even stopped some cars for us so we could do a big train) and some other people said that they should have brought a camera. It was cool:)

It's really easy to see just look for a green wall with a bunch of flowers painted on it.
