I'm all for that Mulletron. Comedy hour need not exist on your bandwidth. Too easy to push the number pad ya know?

So, I've heard all the time excuses in the world about this and that about riding, not riding, shuttles and the like. Boils down to how you organize your time and what your priorities are.

Me? I ride quite a bit, in fact quite a lot. Probably a lot more than most people in my shoes... or not. 2 kids, a wife, a coupla dogs, perhaps a demanding job ;), lots of nagging injuries that demand doctor time, lots of work to do around my house... Just plain lots of crap going on. But I figure it out somehow and I make no excuses. Often it means riding before the roosters are up and after the kids are in bed and all my night time work tasks are said and done. It's called making it happen.

Curious how those who are challenged by time make it happen. Hmmm? Do tell, I'd like another trick or two for my bag of 'em.

PS: No bitching.

Where there's a will, there's a way.
You life sounds like mine. wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs, job, riding very early or very late.
Just make it happen.

Unless of course, you are saying "Ride more, bitchless", implying that you don't have a bitch, but instead have a very understanding wife, and that's why you can ride. hmmmm.

As I've stated before, I've left my days of riding up hills behind me (except when I take out the old Zunow road bike for a couple of hours). I love the DH tooooooooo much.

This winter, me and a bud got into a great habit of riding once to twice per week up at Seymour in the morning before work. We'd be up on the hill, ready to ride down as the sun was coming up. Good times. It also allowed me to get in lots of rides.

I play competitive soccer, so the winter demands too much of that time, so the morning rides were an ideal solution. I'd just start my calls out on the shore (I'm in sales).

Similar challenges now in the summer, except I'm spending most of my time w/ the kids. Swimming, skating, and soccer practices. I allocate three days / week to ride, about 2-3 hours each. This gets me at least two shuttles, possibly three. Same challenges as you, perhaps different priorities. I get a great deal of fitness work between Aug 1st and March, so summer for me is about not running, re-charging, and letting injuries recover. Believe it or not, riding is great for that. I rarely hurt myself badly on the hill, whereas w/ soccer I'm in the physio's office every week, it seems.

The advent of shuttles has allowed me to get the most riding possible, and get to my other priorities too.

BTW: I'm good for morning rides on the shore. With the sun up at 4:45 now, that can make for a good spin in the morning. PM if interested.

My reply was due to the excessive amount of shuttling on Seymour, not to say you haven't or do not ride up at all. Im all for the parking meters.

I have no problem w/ the meters, just a problem w/ how parks spends the money. I doubt it will go back to improving parks. That doesn't justify vigilante methods of removing them. Pay, or ride up.

Sorry...off topic.

Holy good god damn batman!!!!

Dude, ya know you should do a search on the BB before you do that drop on CBC because questions about the transition have been answered before you know. It only takes 10 seconds. :D

You were under attack from all angles in your last thread. I can undestand your defensive replies.

On another note,

That was a sweet ride yesterday on CBC. My Seymour cherry is now popped and I am now ready take on a few more trails.

I agree with the original statement of this thread.

Ride more bitch less everyone. If you really like to ride, you will make time.

Later,

After 45 seconds of research on the net:

The fees are set by recommendation of the Recreation Stewardship panel.

http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/fees/fees.htm

All revenue from parking fees will go directly back into park services, including trails.

http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/operations/rec_pass/rec_pass.htm

The stewardship panel's process and recommendations can be fully reviewed here:

But of course, it's easier to just make assumptions and demonize the government, the parks managers and anyone else that gets in the way.

What I have learned thusfar:

-People make broad generalizations without really knowing the deal. What else is new.
-First impressions are usually pretty accurate and sometimes hard to shake. Don't bother putting the car in reverse.

Well I have a kid and a demanding job but fortunatly im able to sneak out of work the odd afternoon. Im with thedude on the AM ticket, 6:00 am at the top of the trail is a phenomenal way to start the day. Lets get a regular morning ride going because I can never get anyone to get up that early to ride. Im also up for going even earlier if any folks can shake the cobwebs outa thier hair a little earlier.

Apres work night rides are meat and bones of my riding these days usually once a week all year round. In fact when the summer is over im usually cranked up to get the lights out. the extended play up at whistler is a nice treat if you can pull outa work by 2:00

And of course the daily commute is a good way to spin the legs, especially now that I have Lee's old road bike (with biopace rings I might add)

There's something refreshing about riding in those conditions. The feel of a hot shower after also makes it worthwhile. :)

on any given saturday the government will make over $1000 off mtn bikers at Seymour alone. How much of that is going into the trails that they ride and now pay for? That was point Cam was trying to make and last week I happily handed over my ticket to someone else when I was done.

But we do use the park system do we not. There are costs involved in having paid rangers, road maintenece, garbage and shitter facilities availible. I believe in a user pay system as long as my income taxes have been adjusted accordingly we use the park therfore we pay for that right. Bitching about paying 50 bux a year to shuttle some of the best trails in the world is pretty sad.

These parking fees have been in most other parts of the province for years, it was only a matter of time. $50 a year is about the cheapest thing I've found in this sport so far.

here's my beef. Fromme parking debate. are the close parking spots (that may save a potential 25 minute climb) really more important than the kids camps that are now banned on the mountain. i don't know the nitty gritties of it, but it sounds pretty darn greedy to me.

I came to the game late fellas, but I want to reply to a comment about user fees from a few pages back. I'm sure you've seen the reports stating that every dollar spent on parks yields 6 bones back. Also probably heard the argument that parks are not for profit, but are for the preservation of wilderness. So, why should we have a user fee to be able to see/ ride a protected area.

Sure, all money raised goes back into parks. But that's a way for the government to spend less out of general revenue to offset the big tax breaks they gave to big business.

User fees suk bad. They hurt the people who are least able to pay them (not mountain bikers). I'm sure a single mother of 3 doesn't like user fees when she has to get her kids stiched up after a day of riding on the shore (physio I'm talkin').

Sorry to vent, I better go tune the ride to get ready for the shore on the morrow.

Rat: have done the same. I had a lad up here from Chicago last summer, who was transplanted there from Southern California. I guess they ride BIg Bear there a lot. He's (allegedly) an expert level cross-country racer, and he expressed interest in checking out "The Legendary Shore". I hooked him up with a Norco Drop and Roach armour (I also made him wear Roach shorts over his spandex team shorts), and instead of golf, we took the afternoon off to do some riding.

Funny, as I started the drive up to the Mushroom lot, he started getting a bit cocky, saying the stuff on TV doesn't look too hard, and asside from the big air stuff and high skinnies, he was pretty confident. I asked him if he'd had plenty of water (it was over 30 deg that day), and he laughed, "What do I need it for? It's only Downhill!"

Skipped the Mushroom lot, up to CBC I drive. I was going to tear little Dave a new asshole.

To make a long story short, Dave walked just about everything on CBC (too steep, wasn't confident on the bridges, and couldn't drop more than a roll on 6" Marzocchis would allow).

He did a little better on Neds, but not much better. He was awestruck...not only by the stunts (keep in mind...this is Neds...no big deal), but by the beauty, and the level of fitness freeriding demanded. He said he had new found respect for not only the level of difficulty, but the cardio required.

The best part about humbling Dave was on the gravel trail baclk to Riverside drive. You know the little hill near the end of the trail? Dave pettered out on it. He had to stop and walk, he was so knackered! You gotta understand- this guy is a cardio machine, and looks it. He's cut. He was also toast!

I'm in for setting up morning rides on the shore. 6:00 is no problem. PM me and let me know if you want to make this happen. I rarely check back on the threads.

We'd probably disagree on the user fee thing, but I absolutely agree on the physio shout. That should still be covered. $35-$45 per session is simply unaffordable for most. The Libs don't seem to get or acknowledge that physiotherapy helps avoid the greater costs of repeat hospital visits for repeat injuries due to poor rehab, or surgery necessitated by lack of proper rehab. They’re stealing from Paul to pay Pete in this instance.

I used to use EVERY single one of my allotted physio sessions every year (I think it was 15 visits for the $15 user fee). Now I only go for two...one to consult, one to get the rehab plan...then do the rehab myself, unsupervised.

Back on topic: don't bitch to the builders about user fees! God bless 'em!

having read the whole thread, i'm not entirely sure what it's about :S but that happens with a lot of these threads.

as for riding? i get out as often as i can - sometimes it's 5 days a week, sometimes not at all (when i have my kids). sometimes for just an hour and a half, sometimes all day. if i couldn't ride...i'd probably lose my mind.

nsmb is entertaining, that's for sure :D "soap opera" covers it pretty well.

The NSMB Soap Opera Digest

did you hear? Zedbra and Count Blah are no longer, he caught CB with Tony and a chain guide. Gandlalf is involved in a semi legal work from home scam with his new buddy mazda6 (they've ironed out their differences) and Gearwh0re is off the gay pron and FJ is got amnesia, and is actually posting on a french cooking site, but thinks he is still on NSMB. Freechessing is catching on, and people keep talking about dead babies.

Stay tuned for the next episode when putty says "lets go ride our bikes" and we find out about switch's trip to switzerland for his "surgery"

No not a smear campaign, just putting the facts out there. If you only ride the odd time and can get parking for free great, go for it. I would. But if you go a lot and take the chance on a ticket being available, paying $5 for parking adds up to a pass pretty quick. That's why I spent $50 on a pass on Tue. BTW, when I rode Boogey on Tue, there were no cars in the Old Buck lot b/c everybody had parked on the street. It was kinda weird to see. I wonder if the district will step in and put up no parking signs there if the residents and golfers start to complain.

Thumbs up Rat. You're clued in no matter how you slice it.

I've had big and medium bikes but the most fun to be had is on a pinner bike on trails ramped up for big bikes. So, I'll just stick to my thing... riding with the wheels a little closer to the ground on a Hummer with big tread and meaty-ish wheels to rack up 10k+ft of descending in a day. Same recipe for a dozen years now... seems to work well for me and I'm not on a first name basis with the emergency ward.

Another rest day for me today. We'll see how much food I can pack away for tomorrows little jaunt.

Ahh, this is the second lap so no big deal- it was a lot tougher the first time around when I was running a somewhat intense business in a town full of slackers, travelling all over hell's half acre to procure and perform work and barely seeing my family.

The first one is learning to ride trails now which is a ton of fun. Seems as though he kinda digs descending fast :)

Maybe not the bike to do the major tire/ground separation with but a good choice if you ride a lot and don't feel like fiddling with your stuff all the time and you require total reliability due to some of your ride circumstances. I've hung up my squish frame this season in favour if that's any indicator. I'd ride it down at exit 27 (minus the major air shit those vine swinger kids built up, right Sean?) quite happily if that's another indicator- but then again I'm old and don't heal well either.

The ride? Not like a rigid bag of porky 4130 sprinkler pipe nor weird kloojey feel of an overbuilt pop can. Kinda like a spring that dumbs the big bumps down but doesn't mush too much when you matt it. With skinny tread I habitually beat on the road crew on the way to work too.

The angles are little tighter than say a Stiffee but with a 5" fork it'll slack off a degree and voila. My buddy Page had a 130mm Zok on his for 4 years with 321's and 2.7/2.5 tread and it is an amazing bike for what it is. Clicker has an older Hummer (8yrs?), just like my last one, that was totally overbuilt (heavy tubekit, heavy stays) and he still rides it into the thick stuff based on skill and line selection skills. I ride mine with a 4" Fox that I stripped off my medium bike and it just doesn't quite have enough oompa-pa for what I like to do- time for a 5 or 6" fork I say.

I'm not on the daily Cove news bulletin since I no longer live around the corner or dine nightly with the boys but I can ask a pointy question at any time and get a pretty straight arrow answer. I've seen a minor cracked weld here and there over the years but nothing like a front end completely shearing off or a tube getting shredded from impact.

Mind you, a different ride mentality buys a bike like this and I bet you could bust one if you were 'into' doing that sorta stuff just to say you could <**insert chest beating noise, grunts and bananas here**>. Jeez, I'm advertising for the boys now huh?

Keep your Brodie, I'm sure it's a real fine bike worthy of riding in low expectation retirement mode. I like the old school steel bikes, wished I still had all of mine.

BTW, Rabbit is gonna be sending the rest of the stock to the EU in the coming months so act on it sooner than later if you're gonna do it. The next ones will be tres spendy DeKerf versions.

With the pinner wheels and tread and none of the Roox stuff on it yet...

hey rat - isn't the first NSX movie of riders on xc bikes clipped in? i get a kick out of watching that. i get hurt enough falling with flats, there's no way i'd ride the shore with clips  props!

Yah - that's NSX 1. I've got a lot of falls in that one but I wear the ugliest jerseys so Digger put me on the cutting room floor.

There's lots of trails I still ride XC clipped in. 7th, Bookwus, Pipeline, Executioner; it makes them a little more challenging. Only Pipeline I will do without dropping my seat which makes me a wuss by old-school standards.

I don't think I'll do Brew clipped though due to extreme risk of falling flat on face.

Well then, maybe I'll just have to pay to get me a Hummer. I like the sound of that.

I'll never get rid of my Brodie - it was my first ride, bought it new in 92, and it will remain as a commuter until it rusts away.

Is now a good time to pound my chest and grunt? Cuz I'm gonna phone the Cove for a price.

Ha, chuckler. Teach the new ride brood the right things and the trails might actually be around to ride in a few years- tequila jello shooters included of course.

I had two ti bikes with 5" forks. I broke one at the chainstay from dropping to flat on it one too many times and I broke another one at the headtube. I sincerely regret wasting a good ti bike on a klutz like me. Get a cheapass steel hardtail - hunt the bins in behind Tantalus - and use that for a bike you're going to stick a 5" fork on and get Mike Truelove to gussett the hell out of the headtube.

Oh yah, with a 5" fork, the hummer will ride very slack. It is however, a beautifully smooth ride for a hardtail

No offence to the Hummer as it is one of the nicest Sandvik frames around. There have been Hummers replaced on warranty. I've seen Hummers hanging up to be repaired at Toby's also. They can break - it just takes a little more effort!

There was a gorgeous Hummer in Pathways - 17" frame. $ 1500 I think/. It had gucci light XC parts on it but that can always be changed. I'll see if its still there.

With the std Hummer Geometry you'll be on a 17" bike. I ride a 18.5" and have 32" legs but have long leg extension.

Really a non-issue in my mind, the beaver-digi-thread-cleaver thing that is. It's indicative of being so close to something you don't even see it, therefore, you don't understand it, therefore you don't like it.

The ride universe is HUGE compared to the overworked little postage stamp sized slice of dirt that the industry marketeers and coat tailers tenaciously cling to. FYI, that was a subtle bitch... And I do have some fairly deep ride money in the bank to do more of that... but I choose not and will focus on riding.

A glorious day that will be. I hear the calling of others as they also descend from the highlands of their towns and villages nearby to witness and participate in biblical baffoonery of the largest caliber. (Zedbra i'm talking to you)

Now you are refering to images so mystical and dear to my heart, that only a true purveyor of the sick, twisted, dark, and often funny-smelling mountainous land could conjure up. Many a time have we drunk ourselves sober at the Raven with frequent and regular visits to the parking lot, and the masses were horrified indeed.

Just tonight some of us will ride and consume fermented beverages in a left handed tribute to all that the 20th century have to offer. And bitching will not be had.

Good for you, man... I moved here from Gods other Country in '87 but it wasn't until around '89/'90 that a couple of cronies talked me into trying this mountain biking thing. I was a tri-geek and thought they were panzies riding around Stanley Park. I finally went with them. My first ride was up Old Buck (pre paving, when the challenge to make it up to the BP without dabbing seperated the men from the boys), and then down the Dick. I was blown away by what I witnessed on that first ride (walk for me). The road bike has been gathering dust ever since. I remember back then, a secret trail called Neds Atomic Dustbin, which they took me on a few weeks later - loamy sweetness. Then Bottle Top was cut shortly thereafter. Rides up Grouse and Cypress just wetted my appetite for more. I never really knew where I was being taken back then, all these trails were pretty much a mystery, but I loved every minute of it.

13 years and 3 kids later, 47 years old and I still ride pretty much every day year round. For my daily commute from just below the Fromme gates to downtown I use my Element with fat tyres so I can practice 'street' riding wherever possible and I like to cut across the Bridal Path and through the demo forest for a XC rip once or twice a week on my way home. Thursday nights (Cypress) and Saturday or Sunday (sometimes both) I'm out on the RM7 doing the big bike thing. I've still got my old Hei Hei to do the TOM and Cheakamus.

As I write this I realize how strange it probably sounds, but hey, for me it's all good and I love it.

Ride more, bitch less.... you bet. The key... keep it fresh and keep challenging yourself. Last year, I set myself a goal to do a 10' drop before I'm 50. I did it this year with 3 years to spare, so I'm pretty happy.

Girls rule... but my minime, he completes me.

When he came limping home with a broken foot from skate boarding a few months back, the missus and his 2 sisters just looked at me, looked at him, looked back at me, and sighed ~ here we go again ~

I took him up trail building (maintenance actually) up the back of Cypress 2 weeks ago. We spent the day. I showed him how to use the hatchett without embedding it in his leg. He helped me split cedar and banged in nails. We moved rocks into pitted areas. It was cool.

He was so exhausted at the end of the day, I had to piggy back him out.

I checked out his school journal the next week, and he had the whole day decribed in absolute detail.

You've gone way over my head. Obviously it must be time to jump on my bike and head home, and on such a gorgeous day, I think a rip across the bridal path is in order to get there.

BTW, not to be a smart ass.... but, I looked it up the dictionary:

Analyze - 'to study closely'

Analize - no such word, but referred to the anal sphincter.

So, there we go.... we've all learned something, I hope... It's been all worthwhile.

I'm off

PS: No bitching.

OK, OK I can see from all the smiley faces and giggly, jiggly things popping up that my W--K question exposed me as a BB neophyte... but I gotta say, I had fun today and as I rode home the theme kept running through my mind ~ ride more, bitch less.. ride more, bitch less.

They are actually words to live by, and (indulge me if I get a little too philosophical... newbie remember) I think it would be a better world if society in general grasped the concept, not just a bunch of stinky old boy MTB'ers trying to get a ride in. People should lighten up - ride more, bitch less.

So, without further ado, and completely unsolicited I give you my top 10 tips for riding more:

1. Sell your car - haven't owned one in 15 years. I've got a bit of cheat factor - the wife has one - but I, no way.

2. Ride to work - and don't give yourself an excuse not to.

3. Never put slick, skinny tyres on your MTB - it limits you to the road, the road is boring and you'll stop riding. Keep 'em fat and knobby, you'll cut every little trail on the way, wheelie off park ledges, drop staircases, challenge your skinnies skills by riding the curb. Keep it fun and you'll keep riding.

4. Ditch you SPD's for flats - practice your bunny hops the proper way to and from work and you'll keep it fun and keep it going. You can always bolt the SPD's back on for the 'Test' or the 'Chuck'.

5. Ride in the Rain. Cold, dark mornings in the middle of winter when it's pissing rain are a mental challenge but once you're out there the elements slap you awake instantly, all the pussy's are in their cars or the bus. It's a helluva feeling. You're a tough guy.

6. Set the time. The real fun is riding the trails, so you've got to set the time. My family knows not to plan on me Thursday nights because it's Cypress night with the boys and Sunday morning is always ride time. It's a given.

7. Don't get in a rut. Try to do different trails each time you head. I see guys do the same old, same old, every time they go out. Pretty soon they're on the couch full time because they've bored themselves with the routine.

8. Indulge yourself. A new bike, new frame or just new parts always gets me keen to get out and ride. And if you don't have a car to run, you can afford it.

9. Build and maintain trails. There's nothing more fun than riding something you've built. If you need a break from riding, do trail work.

10. Protection. The more the better. Less injury, grazes, scabs and bruises means more riding.

That's it. Sorry if it's a bit long winded. What d'ya say

hey dd that was a cool read, and here's my response:

can't  i'm single and need it to, among other things, get to my riding destination. also ... since it's a truck? works well for carpooling/shutttling (OMG it's the "S" word  )

2. Ride to work - and don't give yourself an excuse not to.

again...can't. my place of employment (no "w" word) won't let me store my bike in my office. i'm currently fighting them on this one :)

3. Never put slick, skinny tyres on your MTB - it limits you to the road, the road is boring and you'll stop riding.

i see your point...but try riding knobby tires for an hour and a half each way - i did it once and almost died! bonked 20 minutes frrom home. i think the trick is to drive part way to w--k, so the ride's a bit shorter. (oh yeah, this was before i was told i couldn't bring in my bike)

4. Ditch you SPD's for flats

i already ride with flats :D

5. Ride in the Rain.

yup, do that too - it's awesome! nothing like that wet squishy feeling up your ass :D

6. Set the time.

agreed. wednesday is trail/whistler day, thursday is sfu/pub night. weekends are flexible. i do have to work around my kids though.

7. Don't get in a rut.

totally agree! half the fun is discovering new stuff.

8. Indulge yourself.

again i agree. even a new pair of grips does it for me!

9. Build and maintain trails.

this i need to do more of :( i have major guilt, after riding both pangor and leopard and not piling rocks  both times i was in large groups though, and we had to keep moving. next time for SURE.

10. Protection.

hell yes. time to invest in some hip/thigh protection, i'm like totally black and blue both legs  either that or total body bubble wrap :S

DAMN THAT MADE ME LAUGH.

Riding story time, bout time Ned's thinkin.

I get my wife to finally take a day off from work. Unlike myself, she has a good paying job and she is much needed at her work. She takes maybe 4 or 5 days off a year. Thats it. Though this year, there have been a few more as the riding bug is creeping in - but thats another story.

A day off and an itch to ride - I always allow her to decide where she wants to go - and she chose Whistler. Nice. That worked out good, because I had planned to help a buddy of mine film up there already - unbeknowst to her. So the filming took up little time (it was for the Zero's - ten speeds and tight jeans ripping up the Biker X) and was a funny way to start the day.

The descent started just before noon. And it was not a good day for me to be needing brake pads. When it came time for her to point down, it was like something in her froze. We managed to SLOWLY make it down a few green runs, and also a few blue runs - but there were a ton of Kona reps up there this day.

These were Kona dealers from all over (talked to one guy from Alaska) and they were not at all trail etiquette. They would take off in groups of ten or more, and they didn't seem to want to go down any black runs (maybe some in their horde couldn't do them - dunno) so instead, they were tearing down Green runs and Blue runs, and yelling at my wife, or skidding and spraying her as she was trying to get down a run and DEVELOP her skills. All and all, I was very displeased with their behavior. We even had to ask several times if we could pass by the start of lower B LINE (could you believe it?) because one horde was taking photos of all their friends riding this small log and rock that leads into it! Not cool. Should I email Kona?

Regardless, it seemed that she could never build up her confidence on any many runs, as she was always getting asked to move over, so it was frustrating for her, and well, put my patience to the test. Then (and I dunno how) she started to blow tubes. The first tube - my pump would not work on Schrader - so we started to walk down from the practice drops (she was getting upset) until I asked a couple of guys with Fanatyko jerseys to help out, which they kindly did (thanx guys). So we started our three hour tour again. Good. things were getting flowing. Back up to do Fantastic again. figuring this was going to be almost my last run, I kinds wanted to pick it up a wee bit. And she did. But, not wanting to hit her front brake at all, she was skidding quite a bit (tisk tisk) and well, I don't carry expensive tubes as spares. Psssssssst. Strike three. And she was out.

Realizing I wanted to go and play with the boys, she let me get a few runs in with my buds. I managed to do so, but not really being warmed up (from braking, waiting) Schleyer wasn't the best warm up, but it got the juices flowing. My bud got her a free pass for the day, so the firts Jug was on us, and we did end the day with smiles and good memories.

She asked me that for her birthday, she wants me to get the whole mountain for just us, so that rude riders wouldn't be heckling her outta the way. I asked "Why?" you only need one run. I gotta punch, and a kiss, and I know she will be back, pushing her limits, trying something else. Oh....remember when we were all learning? When everything was NEW? There were NO complaints - just anticipation for the next ride. And the next.

zedbra - cool story. sounds like the ride sucked for your wife though. too bad you couldn't have complained to the bike park people - i can't believe those kona guys were heckling her on b-line! that's so lame

props to her for not giving up. next time will be better :)
