Rat- You could squeek it in, but it was 3C and raining in the alpine just last thursday. I've been snowed on every month of the year in these parts so it's a gamble.
Ned- I would ride those on either, but if I had the choice of course I'ld take the lighter bike. The damping on my 6" bike with a fox pro pedal feels much more effective than my 8" bike, climbing and descending. With better shocks out these days, I don't think I need as much travel.

If my billfold was refillable, I would seriously consider a Turner 5 spot, Ned.
I've heard nothing but exceptional reviews on them - they use bushings/needle bearings still - makes a much stiffer and more reliable rear end. The standover is amazing, and toptube is perfect. I think that bike with a Flick would be one fun trail ride.

Yup, agreed. I've been lucky enough to ride my buddy's 5'r on several occasions in a wide variety of conditions. I'd own one if I were on the one bike program or if I were on their 'short list' of riders. My buddy is a swine though, he'll be picking up his Demo9 this week so the 5'r is going to destined to be parked for a while

Ned, if'n you care for my 2c here it is. the coiler is my first FS and I haven't yep racked off a huge chunck of trail on her, but I've played around in the pinner stuff enough to know what it's all about. I got the 18" and for my 6 foot frame the fit nicely rides the line between XC and FR.
being the light weight I am I've found the 5" rear to be plenty. mind you my hucking ambition had faded in the last couple years so I'm not realy pushing the bikes limmits. I've got a Z1 QR20 on the front, again me being a light weight, you may want a bit more up front.
Over all it climbs way better then I expected. and in the tight and rocky it it comes alive. flickable is a good term. the only real beef I have it that there are some chain slap issues if you run a 20 tooth granny. I've bumped up to a 22 tooth and there's no problem.
thats about it for now. anything more will have to wait a month or so till I've got some real time in the saddle.
Yup, was planning on mailing you direct for feedback actually.

Head fake him with a set of 888's (gearwhores cant look away), then swap places with the 5 Spot. He'll never notice it missing.

Hehe thanks, been privy to the new goods for a while but having already been one of the dogs sitting on the dock waiting for the first container of bikes I know that more promises are made than bikes shipped in the container. The '05 is indeed the ticket though, betcha I'll be on one later in '05 once the dealer dogs have been fed their bookings.
I'd ride a Switch if what's-his-name Schley didn't ;)

Ned - what is routefinding like between Taseko to Spruce. We'll have to cross Warner Pass and I know that area is pretty sketchy for trails.
Otherwise Dale has proposed to drop off us off at the standard Lorna - Spruce route. I know route finding is easy there

this one is open air design too...but it works like hot damn.
hehehehe my poor bike.
I've yet to do the ride from Taseko back over Warner. Ridden out that way and flown over it a few times though and it's on my radar but I've always lurked elsewhere in favour of saving it for a day when I come in from the north end a la multi-day trip. Anyways, the line back is an old overgrown road that degrades into a route but none of it looks too tough to figure out as long as you don't crap your pants the moment you feel like you're off navigational kilter.
Lorna back to base is a nice ride with a number of options which you can exercise to fill up your day without being out so deep you have to travel the linear route to obey the clock and darkness ie: Deer Pass, Sheba alpine routes. And, depending on how strong your ride crew is, you can also go up Windy backwards and ride out through Lick, Cinnabar or Pearson for a really nice way to end the day. Take some form of light with you as those descents are killer for speed and fun factor.
PS: watch out for bears ;)

3.50 for the test. I was happy with under 4 hours.
Post up about the Ripper before it's on. It would be a good thing to try and hype it up and raise a bit of cash for Graham. Maybe Cam would put up a poster for it on the NSMB front page.

Good time, old timer! hehe
The GK money doesn't go to Graham anymore. Every year a person or family from the Howe Sound is chosen for the events money. The person/family always will have had something tragic happen that now puts them in a position where they need money/rehab.
Last year there were the fewest riders EVER for the ride - but we raised the MOST money ever - over $12,000.
The money last year went to a girl in Whistler who broke her back (like Graham) in a car accident on the Sea to Sky.

Thursday - had probably the best ride ride of the year so far on Cypress. Can't say the trails ;) but pure flow was had. The feeling when your in the zone - balance, timing, power all there - sweet synchronicity.
Saturday - GMG (challenging, to say the least), followed by some of the lower Fromme trails.
Sunday - nothing planned, but woke early, so I pulled on some shorts and a tee shirt, grabbed the hardtail and did a quick rip up Fromme, down 7th, Pipeline and Lower Skull. Great ride. So nice going for a rip not having to worry about all the armour and gear and bull shit. Riding alone for me really brings everything into much more clarity for some reason. There's no talk or peer pressure or waiting around, just you and the trail... total focus, nothing else polluting your head... just ride.
Spent the afternoon with the family down at the river cooling off in the crystal clear water...
Life is good. No bitching.

Friday - went for a mellow hike around Yew Lake - black bears all over the place
Sat - rode CBC - CS - Pingu - Boogey
Sund - rode 7th then CBC - CS - Pangor.
For some reason I feel really on the skinnies. Attacking stuff with my hardtail is a lot of fun.
dd - isnt that cypress high alpine great? Lower GMG is a mindeff for me this year - don't know why but it just is a psych thing.
We have some guests from Colorado to show around so I have to goof off work and ride a lot.

Friday - Sun Peaks with komrade putty. I had no back brake, he had no front brake - fun was had - smiles all around. Both of out lovely ladies went in the Sun Peaks WOmen's Camp and had a blast - they did a wonderful job and I would highly recommend it! $55 for a day pass and an instructor! (If anyone wants to go with their wife - lemme know, I'll ride with ya)
Saturday - Uncle Loopie, Little Loopie took me and putty out and about on Harper and Lolo. This was my second time there and loved it even more! It was HOT but the ride was perfect in sop many ways. Had a good steak and lobster meal at the Keg, and then putty donated his Joker to the Highways.
Today - Must clean the wife's car bnefore I am allowed to ride. I thought it would be funny to dust putty and Little Loopie while they waited for us to return with the shuttle vehicle. It weas funny, until the plume swallowed her car with the windows open. hehe. May ride this afternoon with counterpoint - its his BDay, BTW
you have the day off big boy?
Hmmm, I think Lee could use a dose of my ride on Saturday...
Load up the punks into the trailer at Sun Mountain at Winthrop. Proceed to do the '80lbs of kids doubletrack death climb' and not 5 minutes into it #2 starts wailin' like life's gonna end. #1 soon kicks in and it was in full stereo for the next few miles until I couldn't take it anymore and turned around to head back to the vehicle. Yup, glad I went.... not.
Kids for rent... make offer.
Ned I think you could use a little tip from pablo on the board
Step 1. Attach Adams trail-a-bike to Foes DHS Mono
Step 2. Put young child on said trail a bike
Step 3. Head down Neds
Step 4. Duct tape kids hands to trail - A - Bike as he cant hold on to the grips
Step 5. Repeat as nessisary
My Newborn has his days and nights messed up right now so I can feel your pain.

The major banks treat you like shit until you have some money, at which time they assume the position.
Try a credit union. Usually better service and rates. There's a NV one beside Bean Around the World.

Yesterday - rode GMG with Arthur and Ryan Hayes. I hate climbing in 29 degree sunshine. My Airwalks gave me huge bloody blisters, but the ride was worth it. It was only my 2nd time riding this trail, but everything flowed as if it was 'ol faithful'. It's in great shape right now - a few stunts have remained sturdily sketchy, and thats the hook. Fun was had all around.
Arthur, aka the wheel killer, managed to blow 6 spokes on his new Arrow rim! The bloody rim alone was $180 - how does he do this? Is it a french secret?

Pakistan is next year. I'm planning a trek to K2 base camp via k-hwy but it depends on the politics mellowing out as the k-hwy gets used by drug traffickers a lot right now. Ha some of the boys I worked with this spring/summer have been hitting up the Baja for a few months for the last few winters, sounds chill.
I know nothing of the politics in the end of the world your talking but that whole neck of the woods seems kind of scetchy right now. what else is new, part of the appeal of the place. besides thing seem to take on a different light when you view them up close as opposed to through eyes of the news.
as for weather, the high mountain country of Northen Yunnan and East Tibet remains dry durring the fall and winter, gets wet in the late spring/summer. I've spent about 7 months total in the areas around Lijaing, Zhongdian, Daqin and the like; during oct on to march I've only expericnce a hand full of rainy days. the high passes can get snowed in around mid december, but last year I was trecking in the upper Mekong and Nu river valleys and racked off a couple 4500m-5000m passed in late dec and early jan which were snow free.

I concur, no bitching. Me and Joe Dick nailed a coupla entertaining days last week in the higher, harder to reach branches of the ride tree. A sweet chunk of 70 miles on a biggish format bike with plenty of gas left at the end of the day. Not bad for the fourth trail ride of the year. Always interested in rides that get me into the dog house at home.... Me and the dogs are bed partners now :D
I dunno, we'll see how the chips fall and where the moon is and all that stuff that defies logic. I'd happily ride a TC right now if the leash is long enough.
Anyone know a watch maker who could install a few more hours in a day onto my wife's watch?

No worries. We'll be heading from Lynn Valley at 8. If you wanted to join in at the bottom of old buck we'll be there around 8.45. Then we're climbing up to do CBC/TNT/Neds. Then we're cutting across to climb Fromme and down 7th / Keirkford, but you could bail after the Seymour loop if time's an issue.
PM if you're in so I know to keep an eye out or not.
Jeez eh, thanks Deeds, nice of you to invite me. FYI, I typically start any ride from Indian River Drive and go westward if it's going to cover some real real estate. I'm also on the get the hell out of the house by 5am program so the family velcro is too sleepy to attach itself to me and pour the glue in the ride gears.
That said, look for a dumbass on a black Coiler or a heavy wheeled Hummer or a wildly painted Colnago with a really disoriented look. That dumbass might just be me.

I stopped more then that but the sample of the computer doesn't always show short stops. I had to stop to pull out the topo map a lot as the road maps were poor. It was fun because it was partially an orienteering exercise, all of it was new to me and also because I finally found the singletrack goods.

I need some advice from someone in the know. A guy who doesn't get a whole helluva lot of time off is getting 10 days to do his thing (albeit with family in tow). Where does one score a keg or two of the Belgian bevvy's in Vancouver?

Yup, heard it - don't care what the critics say. It's a good brew after a sweaty day of biking.
From my travels around europe I have found that most Europeans think that any beer other than the one brewed in thier mother country are shitty. I used to sling beer in a pub in London and one thing that I found odd was the locals only drank one brand period. The good part is you never had to ask what anyone wanted.

I pretty much agree - I always lament the shitty beer in Switz. and while the Swiss won't try to contradict me, they also don't suggest much as an alternative - some kind of beer fatalism. Then I say how much I love the big belgian browns and they just blame it on my passport. How anyone could even compare the german beers to the belgians, I don't know - it just ain't the same.
For me:
1st - Belgium
2nd - UK
3rd - tie Canada/US Micro's
4th - Germany
5th - who cares. if you can't get one of the first 4 it's all going to be desperate anyway.
Oh - no ride today (stormin') but sunday and monday saw some good road miles with some climbing thrown in for leg burning goodness. And to earn an extra beer.

Hard question to answer Z. I organized a poker ride on the Seven Summits trail here in Rossland, 35km of mostly alpine singletrack with 3800' of climbing and 6300' of descending. 92 riders finished anywhere between 3.5 and 8 hours. All though some folks had some major heartburn from the wasabi eating contest at the sushi station (that's right, sushi in the alpine), they rode far too much that day to bitch. The beers went down easy at the pasta dinner afterwards and by the end of it all it seemed like everyone had made new friends. That's what it's all about.

Alas I have yet to find myself in Czech to sample original recipe Palsmarter. PU is ok, but I like my beer thick and meaty, unlike my women - that way there's no jealousy. Prague is on the list, and I will eat and drink my way around there, but I suspect I will encounter lots of cool, clean, crisp (insert fave stereotypical beer adj. here) lagers and pilsners, but nothing that will 'keep me warm' on a cold, wet October night. Any beer is good when it's hot out, the true measure is a beer you'll reach for and get comfort from when it's nasty outside.
Beer from Zimbabwe, now that sounds interesting.
Hmm, it's dark and too wet to (road) ride, so I think I'll grab a Karg Weizen and kick back in front of a movie.

As for Czech beers, you really have to try the local beers in either the Czech or Slovak Republics. IMO, the Pilsner Urquell we get here is not that palatable; the local versions are noticeably better, especially their porter.
Try the basic Slovak beers Topvar, Martiner, or Zlaty Bazant. Their premium beers are very good - rich, flavourful, and good body. This is probably because they nothing but barley.

Had a good day at Whis when I was home two weeks ago. Rode Gargamel the next day with Cam, buddy Jay, and a few of the nsmb team boys, and I just had no flow. Time off the big bike is part of it, borrowing bikes every time I'm home, too, but mostly it's a matter of looking farther down the trail, worrying less about what I'm about to hit and can't help, rather than what I can double up further down the trail. Still, it was a blast.
You're right, though, there would have been some hesitation had I suggested a road ride, though that would be because most of those guys don't have road bikes. Some are keen, though.
Anyway, no bitching for me, as I'll be riding in the sun again today, around the lake, on my 2 hr lunch break.

When I was jsut home I spent time in the Rockies, and also of course, back home. The Alps are really amazing, but not as nice. The lush forests on the shore are truly special, and the alpine terrain as you get higher up is something I really missed. The mountains here have their own kind of beauty, but they are also rocky and don't have much top soil, hence little loam. What I really like around here are the italian-style villages - postcard photos ready to be taken almost everywhere you ride.

Lots of the hills here are killers but always end in a village with a central fountain (formerly for horses) in the middle.

I try, but to be honest I have been staying at the office too late, too often, robbing myself of those great after work ride evenings.
Moving over here and getting into road riding definitely reminded me of why I fell in love with riding in the first place, though: using my bike to explore and see new things. Freeride will always be my favorite, but I was getting away from climbing and pedaling, and now I'm back and loving it.
What lake do you ride around? Are you in Seattle? On really hot days here we jump in at the end of the ride about 4 k from the office - just enough road to mostly dry you off before you tramp through the office on the way to the showers. Nice bonus when there are a few topless latin hotties playing in the sun - now that completes your lunch break.
Sammamish is just down the hill from the orifice. Quick 25 mile loop. We do Washington a lot in the early winter for road race prep but I prefer to ride out in the east side road network where I live.
I hear you on balancing the fun whore vs root culture factor. I've found the best of both by taking/making the time to lurk out there deep in the bushes into terrain which might be considered marathon XC riding (to the untrained eye) but is best done on a bigger bike to have the reliability and safety when you're ripping trail-less alpine tundra and tree glades riddled with potholes that would swallow a small car whole no questions asked.
Eat big ride big.

Our GM recruited 4 of us as his domestiques today - at lunch we towed him on the first 25 km of his ride up to San Gottardo pass before turning around so we could get back in time. It was one of those rides that ended too soon. Perfect temperature (not too hot, but perfectly sunny) and the wind was blowing but didn't feel so painful today. My legs even felt like they had a little juice. There is hope for these legs after all. That means tomorrow I'll do a good climb somewhere around here, and finish off with a swim in the lake.

Its already getting hot so off come the jerseys revealing very sexy beer bellies and the odd renagade tatoo. strap on the pads and hit Fat Bastard( quite a fitting name I might add), its the first time down this trail in many moons the hits are pretty challenging but a great trail of drops and loam. Back up to 4 lost souls for perhaps my best run down that trail to date although I still cant hit the two big gaps. Now finally the last Hikeabike to the top of Massage for the classic line. the boys are all pretty tired at this point but with the hiking behind you and a good few thousand feet of vertical comming up you soon forget how sore your legs are. The Massage/Manhandler/Mistress line is such classic riding, Steeps, skinnies, drops its all good. Final High speed rip down Academy to Buntzen Lake for a swim, some cold Stella's and a BBQ.
No Bitching here

Jarrett and Dave were 'on' for this ride - it was impressive I tell ya. Fat Bastard is incredible since the last time I slung rubber down it (mind you - that was 6 or so years ago).
The BBQ at Buntzen afterwards took the cake - a ride extraordinaire birthday

Saturday was an epic. 3,500 metres of climbing (3 passes above 2,000 metres) and 50+ kms of climbing for a total of 156 - the last 52kms were all downhill with very flowy, smooth paved turns on a secondary highway. You could see through almost all of them so for the most part there was no braking - incredible. I have no HR monitor data a la Lee Lau but I may throw together the map and climb profiles.
And today I had an authentic Czech Budweiser (Budwar, I think it was) and it was really nice - very refreshing, a bit hoppy, which is a nice change for a lager.
We took a late lunch today and watched the end of the Tre Valle Varesina race - Garzelli won, Cungeo was 3rd. Then we stopped by the lake on the way home to admire the local wildlife in all its fine, tanned glory. It was a good day.
Was it your Birthday Zed?
Sounds killer... all of it.
Nailed an enlightening research ride with a couple of the boys out in parts unknown. It was a short one at 6hrs but the final hour of descending was worth every ounce of the effort.
Research more, get lost less.

I stopped at the coop today & picked up a gps receiver.
Not research, but I hope that combining this new toy with some quality maps & a bit of heresay will equal:
ride more, stand around looking at map like eedjits while bugs feast & daylight slips away less.

Best to use them when you get some openings in the trees so that an unobstructed shot of the satellites is more likely (I believe you need 4 for a properl reading).
<*cough*> you need to get above treeline more often.

hehehe.
exactly why I haven't picked one up before now. Riding on the south island, the primary situation where bike navigation is tricky outside of the trees is guessing which road will take you through the wasteland of clearcuts...

Got to get out and rip with an old riding partner twice in the last 3 three days - hit up a bunch of 'less known' trails here and there.
Throw in a Pearl Jam concert in between there and a lot of Stellas, its been a good start to the long weekend.
Big shuttlewhore day on the sunshine coast. Many Laps of many great trails with many cold bevies served in green bottles.
Followed it up with a massive steak BBQ

Over the long weekend I took another 2 extra days off and rode:
Thursday - Bike park at whistler
Friday - Comfortably Numb backwards
Saturday - Cheakamus River trails and Big Timber
Sunday - Overnight Sensation, Cream Puff and then Train wreck and Cheak River trails again.
Fun weekend.

After a 2 month hiatus off the sled, perched up and got in two days this weekend. My brakes squealed like a mofo.
First ride was in the fresh white pow of Squamish with an old friend of mine I have not seen for a long time - he was with his father most of the year as his Pop recently succumbed to cancer. I was rough around the edges at first but then it all came back to me.
Second ride was with bunny and a few others. Good to see her in good health and back on two wheels. A few bevvies and laughs afterwards - wicked weekend

thanks for waiting for me and letting me wear a helmet. :P
i think i bitched too much but at least i was riding again so i'm pretty stoked.
Ive been banging out two rides a week solid for the last two months but only one of them has been in the daylight. all praise the power of riding at night, yesterday was especially choice, 3 laps on Cypress under clear skies with a full moon. first time in a long time though where im more stoked on turning the skis than getting the wheels rolling.

Was on the trails yesterday after work. Little frustrated with stupidity so took it out on the stunt that kept beating me. After half an hour nailed it. Despite 2 punks showing up at the end who you could hear swearing and such 2k away.
Didn't let it ruin a good ride. Let them ride away while they bitched about how badly the rock solid stunt was built. Easier to bitch about the stunt than lack of skill.
Gave them about 10 min start and flowed the next 5k of trail. Felt the flow and blew by the punks who I noticed out the corner of my eye on a ladder bridge them google eyed with the holy.... look.
May the flow be with you.

so little to bitch about. besides one day of snowboarding in the back country, I've been mountain bike regularly. for the last two days there has been 8cm of snow on the road, and maybe half that under the canopy. yesterday was a hellish crust, which made me granny gear the whole climb. brutal, though it also provides much traction. ying/yang! first, and only tracks on the single track rocks. going out for a compleat night ride tonight.
the only question still remaining, is do I buy a mid week pass for Kicking Horse, or do I strictly back country it this winter?

No biking but 2 days on the snow...1 alpine,1 tele...feels good to not equate skiing with work anymore.
Well..... Let's see. Haven't posted much here in a coon's age so I'll drop a match on this one...
We have a pile of lumber out in front of the house and a gaggle of groms turning it into something fun every time I turn around. Bitch about the mess? Nah, just laugh and be glad there's no fat little game choads running around under my heels.
A few sunny days on the old Colnago here and there during this stellar fall season but all the speed racers are out looking for a gunfight. Bitch? No, just laugh and remember the leg shaver crowd is a little too serious.
Fenders are on the light squishy bike and they have passed the test a couple days in a row through the sloppy horse trails around my barrio. Bitch about the horse crap? Nope, no trails if no horsies.
Enduro moto is jammed full of mud, tires on both wheelsets are roached, and front brakes are done. Bitch? Worn consumables mean it must be earning its oats so don't be foolish and try to remember how much ground you covered.
Trials moto running gear is shot and blew a fork seal. Bitch? No question it accumulated a lot of vertical and crawled a lot of high ground this year so no point in whining.
I have a job that wrings my neck on a daily basis. Bitch? Won't do any good unless you understand the conditions, the complexity and the expectations.
I was up till 3am Sunday AM at the emergency ward with my youngest grom who was really sick. Bitch? Nah, life's not all about me.
Dog shat on the floor. Cat pissed in the laundry. Bitch? Nah, just write it off and remember they have their bad days too.
Life's good but don't take it too serious and more importantly don't be a dick on the interweb as people remember stuff like that if and when they meet you. :)
Work hard, ride more, appreciate whatcha got.... and bitch less.

Ned, isn't it time to quit the grind and move back to the land of the mighty Canadian dollar?
The grind has amplified far beyond what it once was. Think heinous as the baseline and escalate from there.
When I moved it was ~C$1.50 on the USD so imagine my pleasure of selling my sweet old blue house on the corner of Mill and Cedar in Nelson to scrape together enough $$ just to get a down payment together. Meanwhile I've gotten to know a pile of NorCal people who sold out at the high tide line, paid cash for their villa and still had another million in the jeans. They have this really stunned look on their face when I fill them in on reality on the other side of the tracks.
Well said Ned. Thanks. +1
My pleasure, keep the good vibe for the good ride.

Cool bike blacksheep. I've been looking around for one of those late 80's Reflex bikes that have the lighting kit, small seat and can be plated no questions asked. Was thinking I might flog my Montesa and get onto a Sherco which isn't too hard to get plated down here.
Nice e-whoring Smoke ;)
