it's superpipe.. skiing and snowboarding... the summer X games are going on in Texas and it's like an olympics. there are teams from
USA
CANADA
EUROPE
and Asia
or soemthing like that...
and it's whoever gets the most medals wins...

hoq can you possibly hate the x-games, it pushes sports more than anything!
plus the gravity games looks to be including mtb 4X for the 2004 so that will mean the X-games will follow soon after.

i dont mind wtching the x games. i think most people have a problem with how something like the x games makes a certain sport "cool" like it did with skateboarding a few years ago. you couldnt go anywhere without seeing some little guy riding a board. same with snowboarding. i hate having to save up dough to get a half decent bike when some little 10 yr old gets his mom to buy him a 4000 bike.

I love the X-Games :D But I hate it how everyone thinks they are a snowboarder, thats just so funny! People that are good at snowboarding rule! I just hate the posers that sit at the top of the halfpipe and take the piss out of me because I'm on skies. Thats until I ask one of them to hold up their board and I jib it :cuffs:

The X-Games are lame.

They take sports and exploit them in an effort to create this "X-TREME" frenzy so that companies can sell X-TREME dental floss and X-TREME deodorant and shit like that.

I can't stand watching them for more than 5mins because they announcers always make me want to stab myself in the ear with a gun. Every trick the people do is "OH MY GOD!!! DID YOU SEE THAT!? YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!" and they make it up to be some big glam-fest bullshit. ESPN making signs, and then handing them out to the crowd? Lame.

i dunno....half of me hates the games the other half loves them.

we get to see the best extreme athletes in the world competing which is sooo sweet. i love watching the moto-x freestyle personally....absolutly sick.

then the other half of me aches for the athletes. the games have been openly criticized by the athletes for not paying enough back to the people in it. espn takes a huge whack of the stuff as it does from the adververtisers as well.

the athletes make dick shit to go out and break bones for a stupid espn logo medal. that half kills it

glorifying sports??? just think of those bikes. gonna get a lot cheaper if more people are buying them. it will put SOOOO much money into the bike industry it would be amazing.
skating...prime example. so much money has been put into the sport now. parks are being built, riders are amking money fionally, and things are good in the sport.

if only biking could get that boost.
up until like 3 years ago the top freerider on the planet was still busting ass at a shop so he could pay the bills...unlike the top skater in the world who flies around in jets and has shoe deals and all that crap.

like it or not....our sport needs it

More people also brings more problems though. Look at the explosion of riders on the shore as an example.

Also, a lot of the savings won't really make it up to the high-end stuff. Look at BMX. Everyone says BMX is way cheaper, and it is for the base-level bikes, but look at the highend stuff. Standard frames are ~$3something US, an On-One gimp is ~$3something US.

Yes, the high-end stuff will get a bit cheaper, because at least SOME of the new entries into the sport will be carrying on in it, but the vast majority will be kids who see it on TV one day, say "mom I want a bike!" the next day, and then drop the sport to take up x-treme potato peeling or something else the next day. Personally, I'm willing to spend a bit more on my bike to not have to deal with all the problems that the massive explosion in riders would cause. Imagine the damage to the trails if MTB had the sudden explosion like skating had. It'd be mind-boggling.

Also, I don't think MTB is really "TV friendly" enough to be in the x-games. It was in the xgames in the mid 90s and it lasted 1, maybe 2 years (that winter snow stuff didn't really count as MTB... That was a gimmick to try to keep MTBs in the event). 4-cross isn't all that exciting to watch when you can see BMXers doing it, except with 8riders, right afterwards.

I dunno, I can't stand the x-games. And up until february, I'd gone 14months and only spent $60 on my bikes... So the "it's too expensive" argument doesn't really apply to me too much.

if you were there yesterday for our slopestyle Xpression session yo could see it was spectator friendly. it involved lots of jumps, wallrides and all the stuff near the base of whistler. it was pretty spectator friendly i thought.

Yeah, that stuff could be pretty spectator friendly, but (and no offence to you guys, I'd honestly watch it, but I'm connected to the sport so my opinion isn't particularily valid.) would random TV watchers watch that after seeing wallride to flairs and double tailwhips over spines in the BMX park contest? Generally the average TV watcher wants to see big air, backflips, spins, and crashes...

And I still don't think it'd be a good thing to have that huge influx of new riders. Especially new Mountain Dew fueled X-TREME sports fans who most likely would be in too much of an X-TREME frenzy from watching the X-Games to take the time to learn the rules of the trail before going out. Think of all the places where mountain bikers are barely holding on to their riding areas by a thread, then think of the impact of a whole ton of people who will want to go out an re-create the gnarly radical x-treme stuff they just saw on TV...

Plus, on a purely personal and selfish note, I'd hate to see mountain biking all glam-ed up by ESPN and having signs with "Donahue 4 prez!!" or something distributed to the crowd (I someone actually made a sign like that, whatever, but when they're given out and have little ESPN logos on them that you're not allowed to remove, that's lame as hell and honestly I think it's an insult more than anything to think that they have to create an "atmosphere") and all the drama they try to create for the TV audience. I like it how it is, where the riders are cool, contests are usually pretty low-key and cool, and it's fun.

I love the fact that riders, pro and riders that just ride for fun are so close, its a real community. Thats selfish of me, but I like it the way it is.
