I know the Qur'an burning story is in the USA going down thread, but this deserves it's own thread IMO.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2010-09-08-quran-burning-florida_N.htm

"We are convinced this is the direction God wants us to go," Sapp said. "That's the only reason we're doing it in the first place."

"God is leading us right up to the moment," he said. "It's no different than Abraham and his son. God didn't tell him, 'Go right up to the point where you might sacrifice him.' He wanted him to be fully committed. We're prepared to do what we're called to do."

They are burning the Koran because they say that Islam is a religion of violence, then they compare their actions to a passage of the bible where God asks a man to kill his own son for justification of those actions. I can't tell where the irony ends and the hypocrisy starts.

"yeah, well our guy says we're right and we're supposed to fuck you up!"

I'm pretty sure this whole display has finally put me firmly in the all religions just need to go away and stop fucking up the world camp....the relative good they do is not worth the shit they continually fuck up.....okay, we get it, you all believe in some made up guy who you think approves of what you're doing....if he does exist, I'm sure he's more than disgusted with all of you.

First, it's simply a book. It can be replaced and besides if whatever god you believe in as all around and hears everything. Then do you really need a book to communicate with said deity residing above you?

Second, I propose we burn the Christian Bible on the same day. Better yet let's get one copy of each religions bible, douse in Gas, and light on fire. That way we are not picking on one specific religion but all.

Where they burn books, they will ultimately also burn people.
- Heinrich Heine, 1800's.

I came across this quote years ago doing some research for a paper, it has always stuck with me. Heine, a German Jew, wrote this in the early 1800s for a play, his books of course were burned in Germany in the 1930s.

I'm not saying that this particular instance is similar to the mass burning of all Jewish literature in 1930s Germany. However, the sheer gravity of actually lighting a book so important to massive population of the world is terrifying.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most Yanks freak out when somone burns a US flag?

It's unfortunate that a radical group of 50 people that have been denounced by other religious groups of all faiths are giving normal, everyday Christians a bad name AGAIN. (Remember Westboro Baptist Church and God Hates Fags?)

More fodder for the atheists.

So your telling me that god is telling the follower of Jebus to burn the books of the followers of Muhammad (peace be opn him)?

That would be like Stephen Harpper telling one of his MLA's to burn the riding of the other MLA's.

its more a case of my fictional character is more cooler than your fictional character, kind of like if Superman and Batman ever went head to head to see who really was the ultimate superhero.

any how what i really enjoy about the religious right is that in the first place the very country they live in "where all men are created equally"was founded by a group of people who came to this side of the world to practice thier religion freely and to escape the sort of religious persecution they are now perpetuating on someone else.

I would LIKE to believe that too, but Darth hit the nail on the head. The media attention created this. Why should we care what some half-wit with a handful of delusional follower in Florida does? We shouldn't, and the news media shouldn't either, because an idiot performing idiocy isn't news. It is sensationalism for ratings. It is another example of the news media framing a debate for public consumption instead of reporting facts and allowing the public to form the debate, if one is even necessary. It is the same with global warming. The news keeps reporting it as though it is a debate which gives the fringes credibility. If they just reported the fact that 97% of climate scientists believe that it is a man made situation we could put the "debate" to rest and move on.

I'm with Bukkake. After hearing that song, one definitely has to question credibility.

I am along about respecting faiths. Everyone needs something to believe in. Freedom of faith is a very important aspect of society. The trouble is, faith is all about interpretation. Not unlike the phone game you would play as kids where a message gets whispered ear to ear down the line until the message is totally different at the end of the line. Couple that with the fact that some people just want attention.

I agree that fundamentalism on both sides is ridiculous. But Terry Jones reasoning for burning the Quran was "an act of vengeance against Muslim extremists", not in protest to fundamentalism so your whole premise is flawed. So, no, you couldn't argue that he proved his point, because he wasn't trying to make a point, it was a "Ha Ha, we got you back" moment....

He wasn't protesting Islam, he wasn't protesting Sharia law, it was a cheap political stunt meant to stoke Anti-Muslim sentiment during the Park 51 debate, it's motivation wasn't protest of any sort it was "Vengeance" for 9/11 and it was done with full knowledge that it would cost American lives.....
