Dear god why would someone do that to a bike.

Proof that people can love and hate bikes at the same time.

That thing could use some updated parts, but DON'T PAINT IT!!!!

All I've done to it thus far is Kona Wah Wah's, Minions and swapped the clear zip ties for blue. I'm gonna need a spring for the fork...he's 160lbs, I'm not:lol: At least the shock is air, easy adjustment.

The paint...it stays for now. I bought it from the original owner and he had it properly painted in Dodge Viper and WRX colors with clear. It doesn't bother me one way or the other really.

Why's that?

Why's that?

Front end looks pretty high and with where your mrp roller sits a double bash ring is fairly redundant for chain security... it would drop weight too, but some how I don't think that really matters to you that much... maybe just pick up that sombrio kit instead.

If I keep this bike for the longer term...I will buy a bar in the spring and assess grip height at that time but as it is right now, it's no higher than any of my past DH rides. (new bar cuz this is a carbon bar and on principle, I should replace it as I haven't had it since new, so no hard facts history on it...I like to know exactly what kind of crashes I'VE put a bar thru)

The chain guide...ya, prolly a little much just for keeping the chain on, as you said...but the inside ring has a crap-load of speed-holes in it and the outer, stouter ring is a must IMO...I'm not shy about steep drop ins with steep break-over angles.

Overall weight...back in the day, it was never a concern. But after my VP-Free...I hope to never ride a bike over 43ish lbs again. I won't go full weight-weenie..but a 40-41 would be nice. This bike digital bathroom scales out at 43 right now...the only thing I'll be doing yet is a ghetto tubeless conversion...then I'll take it down to the shop and hit the scales.

The XC rig that I need to ride WAY more...and with The Wife and Daughter. I'm teaching them the ropes of XC...they are newbs. The Wife has a 13.5" Trek 6500 HT...and I finally found the right size and price bike for my Daughter a few days ago, the 15" Brodie Knack. I was looking at HT's too, but this dually came up after 2mths of looking. It'll do.
Tho my Daughter is in an ankle cast as of last week from Her MMA class...bummer.

Mine is built with AM/XC stuff. When I get around to building it with proper dh parts it will be in the 40lb+ range for sure.

There should be a light balfa buildoff just for shits and giggles. I would shit if someone broke 35 pounds still using dual ply tires and everything.

Wayne P
09-01-2010, 02:36 AM
The frame with a coil over is 12lbs. Do the math, it would be pretty hard to keep it near 35lbs complete. Even 39-40 with a light yet durable build would be a good number to hit.

First ride today.

But first...Loopie is taking a moment of silence to mourn Rosehill(haven't been there in 4yrs)...it's a skeleton of it's former self :(

Wayne P

I'm putting in an effort right now to make Rose Hill open, legal, and regularly maintained. But I doubt it will go anywhere unfortunately. We have the resources and insurance to do so.

Loopie
09-18-2010, 08:11 AM
So what was/is the deal with Rosehill anyways? A private land owner wants to take a stand against liability issues or what???

I had no idea Rose has been seeing such low rider traffic.(regular traffic which would've kept back the weeds and runoff trenches)

God dammit:( :flame: I have a great sentimental attachment to that trail. It is one of a kind. I learned to ride suspended DH and jump on that trail starting back in '01 (my first time riding since my full ridgid '89 RM Hammer back in 1990...I came back on a 5x5 '01 RM Slayer and out grew that QUICK once I had the DH bug)

Keep me in the loop on this one Wayne. Only cuz we haven't met in person yet, I'll say you don't know anyone that'll pick up a tool or donate time to Rosehill faster than me.

Hit another old Fave earlier this evening...the Barnhartvale jump/pump loop. The ground is still buff...needs a walk-thru with a chainsaw however and touch up a few lips.

Loopie

So the Balfa...I can't remember now, low BB height or is it just me?! Cuz holy hell pedal striking is too easy(on a 170mm crank too...I've only had 165's before)
Or I'm still sagging too low. I haven't measured it. I'm 210 and have 240psi in the main chamber.(~07-08 DHX-Air 5.0)

Bike feels good. Pedals nice!

Tercon property development owns the middle, private owners have the bottom, and the city owns the top.

Tercon is building a development right across to Juniper, so any trail would probably have to go under or through or not at all. Its pretty much f*cked so don't get your hopes up. I'm trying but it will be up to the powers that be.

The BB7 has a high BB, 14.75" or something. It just feels low. You probably are sagging a lot though. How heavy are you and what's your spring weight?

DaveM

dump the DHX air Loopie

it's pretty notorious for mid travel wallow and doesn't like higher leverage suspensions.

Wayne P
09-18-2010, 03:17 PM
I have near new 5th Element air shock that would fit on there. You'd just need hardware. Super cheap.

The DHX air is weird. I had one on my old Xprezo Raah and no matter how much air I put into it, it never felt right. But on my Reign it feels pretty good. I'm getting the X Fusion H3 air shock to test on my Reign, so it will be good to see how they both compare.

Loopie
09-18-2010, 08:44 PM
Ahhh, I see. Ya, any development will pretty much screw the trail unless a right-of-way path was made by the City. But if it's already privately owned...no good.

What yr/model of 5th so I can look it up? Thx.

Wayne P
09-18-2010, 09:31 PM
The city is abdicating all responsibilities in regard to the Rose Hill trail unless there was an organization to take it on. Our club (kamloops performance cycling center) has the ability but politically it probably won't happen. Loooooong story.

The 5th Element is the one that came off the Specialized Enduro a few years ago. It looks brand new and I'm pretty sure it was only used once or twice.

Loopie

Why is this in the gear section???

Anyways...quick run the other day with the main chamber at 255...much better than 240. I'm not going to switch the shock for now. The bike most likely goes to little-Loopie next yr. I bought it knowing he wants it and knowing that there was a slim chance I would want to keep it but it gets me out for a few rides this yr.
I'm kinda done with the really sagged out DH Sled feel and will want something livelier with 7-8" rear and an 8" fork.

that's not terrible compared to mine weighing at 42lbs and it's a smaller dually :rocker:
