View Full Version : The new fee for parking on cypress

As I understand it, as of May 1st we all have to pay 5 bucks per day each time we drive up cypress, or 75 for a seasons pass. I think that this is absolute bull s*@t. Seeing as it's unlikely that will get reversed, I am suggesting that we have a protest and block off the cypressbowl road at the point where people will have to pay the fee. If we can make our voices heard maybe something can be done to improve biking conditions on Cypress. As of right now we're not allowed to build or even maintain trails, so what exactly do we get out of this fee??

exactly, and there are 2 on the mountain, i could care less if the people going up the mountain to have a picnic have to pay cuz they use the garbage cans and picnic tables, but we dont!
You use the road and the trails stfu moron. You ARE allowed to maintain, Your NOT ALLOWED to build any trails on the shore.

I don't see police on the trail and trail heads? Who's gonna stop you from doing a little work. And if you do come across someone I'd bet they'd thank you.

So if there are no police on the road then it is legal to speed? Interesting logic!
I alos do not think that the trail nazi on Cypress will thank you for doing maintnace.

This is mostly correct, but for the first year it's going to $50 for the annual pass. However, the pass will be good for ALL provincial parks in BC, so that means it works for Seymour too.

Good idea! West Van is on the cusp of allowing legal trail maintenance at Cypress. Blocking traffic will surely convince them that mountain bikers are a mature group that will work well with the District in the future.

Yes, if we show up to council meetings and speak as a group to the District decision-makers we can improve biking conditions on that mountain.

You get a provincial park system with roads and parking lots that are maintained in the summer and plowed in the winter. You get a park management system that keeps the park clean and plans park system around maintaining the environmental integrity of the park. You get a lot more than you get when you park downtown and pay 8 bucks to use an Impark lot.

Actually, that may not be true. Check with the NSMBA. It's my understanding that they are working very hard to get approval for trail maintenance on trails that are in a certain area, and are very close to getting the approval. This could be very good for the NSMBA as an organization, and for biking.

Dem the rules today - I dod not say that they would never change. We need to work to get them changed.

We have known this was going to happen for a few months now. Oh well... Can't NSMBA do anything for us?

Why don't you ask them? A lot of the time, threads like this get started because something happens that upsets someone - that's what this forum is for. But it's silly when someone is quick to get up in arms and do something rash like create a blockade, when you probably could have learned all about the situation on Cypress had you attended the NSMBA Annual General Meeting.
The best way to maintain the status quo (if that makes you happy) or improve the situation is to act before there is a problem - so much easier to attend a council meeting and have your voice be heard than it is to pull some kind of maverick maneuver that will only end up wasting the hard work of organzations like the NSMBA. Now I'm trying not to preach here, because I'm not an active trail advocate - but I support the NSMBA and I will be making an effort to get out to as many trail days this year as I can, starting this Sunday. What I am saying is that issues like this come up several times a year, and if enough people got involved BEFORE a decision was made, we would have a lot more voices supporting the efforts of those that are paving the way for us to keep the trails open, and improve the riding in our mountains.
Chris9, since you're curious to know about this situation - why don't you call the Parks Board, get the full info, and then let us know so that you can help the info get out. Or, PM fergs - I bet he's got all the info for you.

I understand the situation, the liberal government in BC wants everything to pay for itself, I understand that they have to do this because the NDP screwed us up so much, but the fact is that they could charge people for social programs, these parks have been here for years, and their only real cost is paying the park rangers, of which there is one on cypress. For something that has been here for so long I dont believe that they can just charge us, because they are not improving the park in any way. And by the way, the 50 doller fee for the pass, is going to continually go up each year by a riduculus amount, why should we be paying welfare for people who do nothing all day out of the profits the park will make on our fees

BC Parks link for user fees is here:
http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/fees/userfees.pdf
If it turns out to be like Ontario riding up isn't going to help you. Many parks in Ont. now have gates so you have to buy a pass for the day. Oh and I have ridden my VPS up Cypress.. It was not fun..

This is even better! Check this link out. It says it'll cost five bucks to park on Mount Seymour. That'll keep people off CBC.

Collection of day-use parking fees at the 28 selected locations in the southern part of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland will commence May 15, 2003. The annual pass will be available for purchase at the park, or through selected vendors (confirmed distributor list at a later date) throughout the province. The $75 Recreation Stewardship Annual Pass (discounted to $50.00 until March 31, 2004) will allow free unlimited vehicle parking in all 28 day-use areas.
I couldn't find where it says you can buy the Recreation Stewardship Annual Pass.

Is the Mushroom Parking lot on Seymour covered by this? Or is only up higher, where CBC starts?
