I'm in the process of trying to sell my bike.
I have a guy who is very interested in Indonesia.
Does anyone have experience with selling stuff to strangers like this...ebay etc?
What is the best way to handle the payment?
I also need to find an economical international shipping company. Any ideas?

Shipping to Indonesia would be brutal would it not?
Why not use PayPal?

I have a bank account in Nigeria with $30,000,000 in it. Send me $50,000 to cover the transfer fees and your bank account and credit card information and I will transfer 10% into your account for your help.

make sure he understands he is paying shipping, and send it COD.

Don't bother with the hassle. Too far away and too amny risks.
Somebody closer will buy it, be patient. I would only ship abroad is I was pre-paid. When I sold my bike to Nova Scotia, I insisted I was paid first. I was and it all worked out.

There's a well know used-bike scam going on in Indonesia.
You have probably 99% of chances to get ripped off. Don't do it!
Dont do it bro! If you had to sell it, make sure you get the money before sending it.
PS. The last time I heard, Paypal is not doing business in Indonesia because there are just too many scams.

If anyone from Asia, Africa, or Eastern Europe want to buy something off the Internet from you run far, far, away. It's not worth the chance. There are to many scams going on.

I was wondering how people handle sales like this. Whether it's Indonesia or Calgary, what's the process? As a seller I wouldn't feel comfortable shipping anything worth $100 or more without receiving payment first, and as buyer I wouldn't feel comfortable sending a cheque to some guy without a guarantee that I will receive the item. Are people just supposed to trust each other or are there third party companies that handle things like this?
Mulletron waited for payment, my buddy just shipped his frame and trusted that the check was in the mail. Both deals worked out...

Thanks for all the advice. I don't think I'll sell it to this guy.
The only way I will is if I have the money in my hand before I ship it.

But at least you can still dispute the charges with your credit card company. If you send a cashiers/certified check, you can't really do anything.

Run away from that one - Indonesia leads the world in credit card theft - we often get orders for the store from Indonesia and less than 10% of them are legit.

My thoughts exactly! It seems like plenty of these deals take place through various buy/sell sites and online auctions, however, one party simply has to trust the other by making the first move. I too would never send something without having the money first nor would I send money before receiving an item first. It just seems like one big vicious circle. Is this simply the way it is?

What do you mean exactly? I've never used paypal so I'm new to this.
If someone pays me through paypal from Canada or another country, once the funds are in my account, how can the deal go bad?

Thanks for the tip. I'll take your advice!
you must give pay pal your credit card info
money is recieved in trust
you ship the bike
Buyer claims he did no receive what he paid for and has his credit card reverse the transaction
Paypal charges you.
Seller asumes all risk in international transactions

Money order before bike.. period. Shipped COD, or cost built into the sell price and added to the MO. I wouldn't bother dealing with them anyway, to much hassle.

Is there any way to get ripped off with a MO?
If I receive the MO and get the money in my bank account before I ship the bike, can the guy later lie and say he didn't receive the bike and then get the money back some how?

Sell it to anyone who pays you for it.
It's really quite simple.
COD can be done within Canada......so the buyer doesn't get what you sent unless he pays the postal guy the amount you specified...in cash. Post office sends you a moneyorder.
No COD across the border to the US. What I did was have my buyer send a certified cheque to my bike shop, in the bike shops name, first. It made them feel more secure:) Then I sent the bike.
Overseas? Same. He's got to have payment secured first before you send. Simple. Tell him to pay your shop and talk to your shop, they can tell him that you are legit about your bike sale and such. If he doesn't want to do something like that....too bad I guess.

MO is as good as cash.
Don't deal with credit cards IMO...they can be stopped, reversed, stolen, etc....
If you find a buyer in Canada....just use the Post Office COD program.....works great. Just make sure they check off the little box that says "cash only".

Those both sound like good options.
BTW- when I suggested Paypal to the guy from Indonesia he suddenly wasn't interested anymore. Smells like a scam to me. That bastard!

Money orders are bank certified, you can deposit it and have it right away. Don't send the bike until you have deposited it though. Once he's sent you the money order and its deposited he can't get the cash back. What are you selling anyway?

you guys need to start using
www.westernunion.com
use their money orders or the bid pay system.
you can track the progress of the money order online and find out when they cashed it.
always have the cash in hand and wait for it to clear in your bank account first.
never send them the bike or parts first.unless you use cod.
if they want the bike badly then they can shell out the extra $$ for cod.
josh:)
