View Full Version : what harm do HT's do to bodies????
i was thinkin what my knees and back, etc. would be like when im 30 or so (im 17 now) if i keep riding a HT. i love hardtails and love goin big on em. coz i have been talkin about doin 20foota's and shit that my body might not like it when im like a bit older.
does anyone have stories about screwd up knees, etc. from riding a Hardtail?
and how old r u? do u ride hard? like go big? how big?? i ask lots :P
I'm 28. 11ft to a perfect tranny is the biggest drop I've done on a HT. I've totally had enough of doing drops without really good trannys on HT's. I'd rather hit 10ft to a good tranny that 4ft to flat. I reckon I trashed my right ankle two years ago doing this one particular drop that was about 8ft to a downslope that was slightly downhill and needed to be hip'ed to get on-line for a jump after the tranny. Looking back I wonder what the hell I was doing it was heavy.

I've trashed myself a couple times on my hardtail. I mostly ride a big squishy, but every now and then i just gotta take out the hardtail and abuse it - i pay with a sore back and ankles for about three days, and then leave it alone for a month or so. what harm can be in that? :D

Keep riding the HT Dan and the things that your worried about damaging keep getting stronger, ankles, knees, wrists etc... your only 17, you should be good for now :D
Maybe buy one of those intenses off one of those guys when you get a little older :P

ah you bunch of pussy. I rode BMX for like 10 yrs (jumps, 1/4 pipe, 1/2 pipe, flat land freestyle and raced) I'm 33 now and nothing. What you do learn is to land using your legs and you become super smoothe rider.
Throw you legs over a nice full squish bike and man, your like Wade Simmons rippin' down the trail. Smoothe as butter.
So then you sit back and watch all the people who have ridden FS bikes all their life and see how hard they land because instead of using their legs they use their whole body and the the suspension to suck everything up.
So back to your orginal question...what does a HT do to your body nothing...as you get older you just have to stretch more. Try yoga. Great for stretching and helps you maintain centre when hitting them jumps.

stretch, be heathy, listen to good music, read Bellow's "Herzog" (very carefully), drink lots of alcohol and eat good food.... and don't talk to anyone.
you'll be fine, man. just fine.

Depends how big and how fast you go.
Joints are joints......you keep subjecting them to abuse and you're gonna feel something when you get older....maybe not crippling, but they'll get sore easier.
I wouldn't worry about it or anything.....just that as you approach 30....and if you like to go fast......FS is nice:D

talked to my doc about that and he said its not that bad, depending how you ride. running and off-piste skiing is way worse - to your knees anyways.

If you ride a small hardtail too much, your knees can get a bit wrecked.
And don't worry, talking about doing big drops won't hurt you.

yeah, problem is that he's not only talking of doing big drops,he's hitting them on a hardtail with psylo's...13 foot water tower is big enough on a hardtail IMO dan,but if ya wanna progress even bigger...you're nuts:D

hahahaha i suppose that you didn't tell him about just exactly what the kind of riding freeriding is?my chiropractor said that biking would do my back good, but as soon as i told her i was doing any type of drops she told me to go full squish again.
what a crock of shit..i think i'm gonna trade the vps in for a hardtail.
hardtails only hurt you if youre a pussy. learn to ride smooth.

Not saying he doesn't, but he mentioned that he was talking about hitting some 20 foot drops, not doing some 20 foot drops. But 13 feet, shit dood, thats intense. Mad props!
There'll probly be some effects in the long run, butnot that bad...

Ummm, how? Unless you're riding with just a seat post and constantly land with no feet.

old school for sure:lol::lol:
Kai....I think the prostate concerns are for XC or roadies that are sitting fully on the saddle for long periods of time with the seat not adjusted properly.

The ht is only bad if you have a preexisting back condition. Until I hurt myself a hundred times playing hockey and lacrosse, and got rear ended by cars a few times, my back was fine. Now I can only ride a HT for 15 minutes at a time. Then again, I'm supposed to be using a walker: I'm 44.

HTs arent that good for bigger drops. He did a 12 foot roof drop and almost broke his leg.
I always see people that are like 30 around here on HTs. They still do big drops and dont seem to get hurt.
If your friend almost broke his leg doing a 12 foot drop on a hardtail he should look for better landings or get a lot smoother.
I've seen 12 foot drops on BMX's.

yeah i dont ride anything more than 5 feet to flat, and even when i do, i suck sooo much of it up with my legs, you always gotta be prepared for it...my joints especially my wrists have been hurting lately but i know its cause i do a ton of running(running the van marathon next week), so my body has sucked all the extra fat out of everywhere, and my wrists, hips, and the bottoms of my feet even feel thinner and weaker. but if you lug it out and ride the shit properly and where the gear...and when you do where gear doesnt mean u should bail lots;) ...its so much better to stay on the bike
just my thoughts
