My buddy and I were walking down Granville looking for a place to eat and watch the game on saturday night. We passed by the Commodore and there were a lot of people outside. So I asked the bouncer who was playing.

"Loverboy is playing tonight".
"Loverboy?!? bwahahahhahahhaa" I answered as we walked away. We cruised further down the road until we finally found somewhere to chow.

So we hit this little Japanese joint for some eats, and of course after a few drinks the conversation went like this.

Me: "What songs did loverboy do?"

Buddy: "Oh man, they were huge in the 80's. Turn me loose, the kid is hot tonight, working for the weekend, that kind of shit."

Me: "Really? Wow. Tell you what. If the tix are cheap, lets check them out"

a few more of these.....

So after numerous hot sake and large Sapporo beers, we made our way back to Granville.

We get to the club and start looking for scalpers. The first guy we spot is trying to get $80 for the pair.
My buddy barks "80 bones, that's crazy! I'll give you $40 for the pair. It's all I have on me" Now he and the scalper are arguing.

Scalper then says "Guys, there's lots of hot young girls in there". At a loverboy concert?!? Sure...

Growing tired of waiting outside, I say "I have a twenty on me. Wanna take $60 for the pair?"

Scalper jumps on the deal and we're in.
I get inside and my buddy says to me, "idiot! I was trying to get them for $40". Apparently I don't barter very well. I don't care at this point, as I stare into the sea of middle aged fans. I swear, Ladner was dead on saturday night, because most of it's inhabitants were at this concert.

Where the youngin's at?

The rest of the night was a bit of a blur. We were the youngest in the place, which is saying a lot because we're both in our 30's. The band rocked the house. Even at 55, and fat as a lump, the singer still has it. Unfortunately, I was forced to drop "gooch" money at the bar. At one point I had a pair of Heine's and a pair of Jager shots. Grand total; $28!

Overall though, the show was well worth it to see a band I remember as a kid.

Oh man, if I was a single guy I would have hit my limit for bagging cougars. But being that the wife and kids were home, I played nice.

I did get my ass pinched though. Kind of shocked me, because it was either the hefty chick behind me, or her weird guy friend.

Posted via a guy who is working for the weekend.

wow, I took those at 11:09?
You've really blown my mind with that. Maybe I did get home that late. I thought i got back around midnight, but the night was just getting started at that point.

Ps: I was old enough to fcuk when you were born, and even I thought there were a lot of old people. They were having a good time though, and that's all that matters.

I think...

I hope.

Amazing that you could write that post and not sound name-droppy.

You know how rarely I'm able to drop that? I'll take any chance I can get.

Maybe not foriegner, but I did yell out "play Juke Box hero!" at one point. I was pretty sure Mike gave a "wtf?" look right after.

That's a rare piece of memorabilia. Looking at the size of good old Mikey, I'm surprised he didn't eat it.

Buddy killed the show though.
And with Spider on bass doing a 10 minute duo with the drummer, I was in awe.

The original bassist for loverboy was lost at sea in 2000 and declared dead. His name was Scott Smith. Doug and the Slugs bassist was Steve Bosley. Can't find too much info on him though. He looks to be out of the public eye.

 I can't believe that they are still doing shows. Mike Reno used to go up to Pender Harbour when I was a kid to fish and booze, so we used to see him on the docks all the time singing impromtu concerts for old ladies and shit (the Loverboy mania had dwindled by then). A total cheeseball, but I guess that is how he got paid. He was getting fat then, and that was '90.

I appreciate that you made an effort.
Thank you.

 I can't believe that they are still doing shows.

The women LOVED Mike Reno. When I told my mom I went to the concert she asked if he was still hot. That cheeseball got play, often.

I heard that he does about a hundred or so shows a year with the band. They played so well together too, like a band does with 30+ years of experience under their belts.

I need to go to another show.

trooper is a good band to see live still ,I seen em in PG ,their old drummer from 20 yrs ago was playing in a country band at the PG hotel so he came over & sat in for a set on his lunch break ...just like he had never left

I don't really think these bands take themselves too seriuosly anymore

I think that's what makes them so cool now.
They put on a good show without any pretension or attitude.
