View Full Version : my name is mike, and im looking for...
a bike shop in the lower mainland that:
-wont knowingly overcharge me
-wont act like a bunch of grouchy old farts when i walk into the store
-will notice me or maybe even talk to me if i dont wander into the store waving a thousand dollars around and with a pocket full of my rents credit cards
-knows my name, and remembers it. because i remember theirs
-gives me good prices
-has a good and part selection in stock

OVERTIME SPORTS IN COQUITLAM.....If they don't have what you need they'll order it in, still giving you the best deal.
There's tonnes of shops like that. I have only had piss poor service from Cove.

I know this is not the lower mainland, but here in pg "the northern" is the best bike shop. When I go in there I feel like Norm when he walks into "Cheers". I hate it when you walk into a shop and get nothing but attitude.
Last spring when I was down in van I went to the Deep Cove bike shop and got some excellent vibes from that shop. Everyone there was totally cool and super nice!!!:)

it's worth it, the more stuff you buy the better the prices get too.
oh another one to add to the list
-wont tell me they have a certain part in stock, and then i drive out there and find out they in fact dont have it, and never did

Back on topic though, find a shop that treats you good and all that, then keep going back. Shopping around to save 5 bucks on a bash guard or 15 bucks on a fork probably isn't worth it in the long run. If you're loyal to one shop, they'll notice and treat you like an important customer that they don't want to lose. If you go in there with parts from other shops, they'll most likely dick ya.
why not shop around a litte? so what if i bought my hubs somewhere else, but im coming to buy my rims at a different store because i can save 20 bucks..
at least im buying from the store that has the rims for 20 cheaper. they shouldnt act dumb, they are getting my buisiness

If you save 20 bucks on the rims, then two weeks down the road you need something else, they're gonna say "why should we give you a deal? Why don't you go back to wherever you bought the wheels." I'm telling ya, most places will at least come close to matching prices and if you're loyal to them, they'll treat you well.
For example, I go to Kelowna every summer and I always go to Cyclepath. The guys in there remember me and help out when I need it. Last year when I broke my frame, they offered to do the warranty even though I bought it up here in PG.

the thing i love best about overtime(also pisses alot of shops off)is their low prices are written or tagged right on the part.none of this "how much will this part cost me" bullshit.you can look around and SEE exactly how much things will cost.you don't have to worry about coming home and finding out someone esle paid 30% less then you did.one price for all, with deals(as m33p said)for buying in bulk.

very true. i go, most of the time, to a shop that is mainly road, touring, and some xc. the guys are awesome, will always throw in little shit for me for free.
however, it always takes a bit for them to get parts, but i can be patient.

I don't think that the idea that everyone should be 'loyal' to their LBS is the right attitude. They are running a business that is a retail/service industry.
On the retail side of things, they should fight for your business and be loyal to you. Far too often, guys get caught up in trying to be a 'good customer'. There is no such thing. There is 'money in' and 'money out'. That's how retail works. If they want your money to come 'in', they better treat you right. Don't be embarrassed to ask for the best deal. They should be embarrassed that someone is undercutting their prices.
On the service side, once you find a good mechanic, don't be a jerk about service prices. You are paying for someone's expertise and experience. Do not try to low-ball them too much. Some bikeshops have 16 year old kids that have been working at the store a few weeks trying to build your wheels and work on your forks and they really do not possess the skillset or experience.
My LBS has a great mechanic and I recognize that and respect his advice and work.:)
So to sum up - on the retail side, the bike shop should be bending over backwards to get your business.
On the service side - find a good mechanic and be respectful because you're lucky to have their advice and service.

Go to Overtime like many people say. I go there for almost everything. If you take cash, the deals are better. I always take cash.
If you need somthing fixed, its done by the next day, almost always. You need a wheel build, its done in a day. Ive gone in there before and had things done, and been out in 15 mins.
The place is best for wheels, and smaller parts.
The prices are as marked, no tax, nothing extra.

I havent really bought much from them, since i work for another company and i get parts there. but they still dont dick me around when i need some small parts.

When I went to JH and the Cove during spring break I noticed that both have awesome service. I went in, and I was just a random poor kid who's never been to either store before, and at JH, almost every worker there was asking me if I need help and stuff. Wicked service. At the Cove, two guys asked me if I needed help or anything, but Cove is a much smaller store so it was still rad service. I'd go to either of them if I was in Vancouver. Only problem was it was kinda scary in JH because everyone was trying to talk to me and I couldn't talk because I had a super bad cold and lost my voice :( I felt like such an asshole...

Hey mike, werent you a Steed Cycles customer? i know what you mean about bike shops tho, but ive been with BSP in lynn valley for over a year, even tho i live in west van, i really like the lynn valley store, the mechanic is a super chill guy, knows bikes inside and out, works hard and listens to you, which i think is most important, Kevin the manager is a really nice guy, can deal with anything, works very hard to keep the customer happy and they can order anything in, in a matter of days. They have a good part selection in stock, lotsa tires and important stuff like rear D's. Good Prices, Great service and Rad Bikes, GIANT's! dont expect to have pro deals laid out for you if you are a new customer, the whole "hook up" is because you have been with the shop for a while and they are loyal to you and know u are a good customer.

I personally think that if a shop is not willing to help you out, or cater to your needs then there is a better shop out there waiting for you somewhere. I would say, you should come up to the loops and go to a shop here, (Stroke n' Lotion for example or Full Boar). Wicked customer service and genuine helpfull information. But with every green apple, there is a rotten one.... Bicycle Cafe has some of the worst service I have ever seen. Not bad bunch of ppl, but I won't buy parts etc from there. In Van, I've personally had best results from Dizzy's.

The Comp32 at Overtime was $85 when I was in there a couple weeks ago. That's the price on the tire; what you can buy it for may be less if you're a "loyal" customer. :)
It's basic business. Find a store and stick with it - become a loyal and recurring customer. Know how to deal with a business - any business. For example, I go to Cove all the time, and I get awesome prices on parts; I've never found or heard of better prices than what I pay at Cove. They also stock a lot of parts. They are very close to where I live, and are therefore convenient. Service has always been great.
Learn to deal with the store, and it's employees. It's valid for bike shops, as well as any other business.

Price wise... I'd check out Cap's in Langley... don't deal in a lot of high-end stuff so they usually have good specials (2-steps for $1250)... I've heard really good things about the guys at Bike Zone as far as knowledgable staff... The best shop in my humble opinion is Overtime in Coquitlam...
couple of good guys running their own small shop... awesome quality of wheel builds... they tour in a motorhome in the summer supporting the BC race scene and will even bring you parts to the races if you call and order them... the prices are good and did I mention the quality of wheel building is awesome???
I got a XC wheel built for my girl friend last year with a Deore Rear Hub, Sun Rim (can't remember what its called but its quality) and DT spokes for under $100 and it has never detensioned at all... plus they stock a huge assortment of rims so you don't have to wait for them to be ordered... last time I was in they had some Mavic (321, 521) The whole Sun variety pack, Veulta in many colors and a set of THE rims... probably stocking Arrow now too since Orange sports is bringing Arrow Rims and Tires in...

Here's the thing, if you are going to deal with a big shop on the phone make sure that you get the name of the guy on the other end of the line.
See, with the small shop it'll always be the same guy no matter what, so they will know what you are talking about. In the big shops you might get the guy who knows what the fuck is going on (me) or you might get some schlep who is working off his debt that he racked up at the Freezeride (Sideshow).
I don't know of any shop that goes out of their way to piss people off. It's almost always a stupid miscommunication. And people do make mistakes.
For the record, that guy was right about Tantalus. Coolest shop around.

Totally agree. I've never had a problem with any person at any shop. I may not like the prices, the quaility of service, or the selection of products, but dealing with the employees is never a problem. Sometimes individuals need to look at themselves and how they interact with others before getting the label gun out.
Oh, and nice comment about Corey... ;) :D
