I just saw it on TV, it's pretty funny. Kid's got a rigid, and he says it won't stand up to riding down hills, so his parents buy him a Can Tire Schwinn Dualie. Poor Schwinn has been demoted to Canadian Tire!!

It's a sad day, a sad day indeed.

yeah its pretty funny
the canadian tire guy says something like
'this bike has dual suspension, alloy rims, and vee brakes, and will stand up to any hill you take it down'

If my parents opened the garage and said this is your new bike and theres a canadian tire schwinn sitting there instead of my launch I would start to cry. :(

The bike might be a piece of junk in your judgement but for that kid its a sweet new ride:)

Not everyone has the money, or their parent's money to buy the bike of theirs dream. ;)

When i got my Brodi Torque rigid XC machine of terror, i was so happy. It had toe clips and everything, first bike i ever free rode on. Even had a Bash ring!:| 500 bucks, I never knew bikes could cost so much. I bought a "fork" for it, and the world was my oyster!

I think what worries me in the commercial is that telling someone a $300 Schwinn is a good enough bike to hold up to anything may be a bad thing in some areas. Like here, where the rose hill gap is a common hit for young riders. I don't think the full suspension or alloy rims would hold up. Things in the sport are so much bigger and more dangerous now. It's no longer a scraped knee when you fall off your Canadian tire bike on your lawn, it's 40 feet at 60K to your frame breaking and you going to emergency with serious life threatening injuries.

In addition to the excellent points above, most kids would be better off on a cheap hardtail than a bad full suspension bike. You could get a used rampage or sasquatch level bike with decent forks for a few hundred dollars, and be in a position to learn more, and become a better rider from a lighter, more manouverable bike.

Guys...we're talking about your average 10-year-old here. Mountain biking is not that mainstream. Most people still use bikes for what they used to be used for. You know...mountain biking is riding the gravel trails on the UBC endowment lands and the Valley Trail in whistler.

The mountainbike is the bike for general use now. Not a bmx-style cruiser, not a roadbike, or those bikes from way back that looked like a cruiser-roadbike; mountainbikes.

I just have a problem with the commercial being corny.

The funniest thing about that commercial is that the kid is way to big for that 20" bike. So go talk to the "experts" at Canadian tire about buying bikes, and you'll end up with the wrong size!! hahaha I just think that's way too funny. :D

man i m sure going to have a good job at canadian tire,

"these bikes are craps, infact, they are really horrible, if you love your son, go save some more money and walk down to john henry's or deep cove in north van and buy him a good norco hardtail like the rampage or sasquatch, if you love him more and dont want him to be hurt, buy him a norco vps series, the more you love him the more you can spend. he'll love it! Also, DONT EVER COME HERE to buy a bike!!"

i love that commercial so much, they dont even huck the freaking thing, they should have hired my lil 8yr old cousin to huck a 5 ft drop

It looked like a drop at first to me, and I was like "Are those kids gonna hit that up?!?" but they didn't.

No, people need the suspension to suck out all the brake ruts in the sidewalk.

a bike is a bike. it doesnt matter what it is, or what type (go santa cruz), as long as you are out there riding, having a good time, and doing it.. thats all taht matters.
so sometime get out and ride the first trail you ever rode, or better yet.. do it on a bike like what you used to ride.. remind yourself where you came from, and then go back and hit up your regular trail. makes you appreciate it more..
basically.. im saying.. bikes are meant to be ridden.. so ride

word to that.

i paid for my own bike but i dont see a 12 yr old being able to afford a norco Team DH or Santa Cruz v10. theyd need a rich mom or dad to pay for it. in the end they're still riden. so they;'re cool with me. whatever bike it is. hell i just go pedalling around with ppl i know who casually ride! and they're on full rigids and stuff and im on a pretty pricey rig. does that make them a tool? no. it just means they have different needs than me. a 12 yr oild is not gonna be dropping stuff or anything.

good point dom.

man the city is gonna need to put speedbumps on the sidewalks pretty soon, i hear those canadian tire bikes are built for speed! go below 5km per hour and they blow up though! just like in Speed. or is it the other way around? over? oh well i cant remember

I agree with you to some extent that it is somewhat funny.

But is that it is all relative. I mean, for anyone who lives and ride BC you know you need some serious rig just to finish the day i one piece :)

I think most of you will agree with this;)

In the publicity in question we see your average 10 years old kid who by the way doesn't care much for the price of the bike has much has the fun he will experience with it.

Remember peeps, BC is for riding freaks, good riding freaks of course:lol: but freaks nevertheless. You shouldn't apply your values to judge whats good from whats worthless. :P

Ultimately that kid might turn out to be the next great rider instead of the next great looser :)

I always thought, as a joke, to approach C Tire for sponsorship for a race team. We would get them to buy us M1's with custom paint - the CT logo and CCM on there. We'd have a tour Van, trailer, and all the tools and a mechanic to go to every race. Oh that would've been sweet. Our posters would be up in the bike section of each store and in their catalogues.

Guys it's just a commercial! I doubt that the kid is gonna be the next great rider, maybe the next great actor cuz thats what he is, AN ACTOR. and who cares if someone slags the commercial, it's just an AD. People on this board make such an argument out of everything! It so funny.

when your 8yrs old your bike shouldn't be more than $300 or so. you outgrow it so fast and dont take care of it and it teaches you about life and how you dont always get ur way.
i only got a real mtn bike when i was in grade 9

I think its totally cool that you can get schwinn bikes at Crapy Tire!!! I always had to get my bike from Crapy Tire when I was a kid, and they were always a piece of shit!!!! Now kids can have a decent bike for a decent price!!!:thepimp:

yeah i totally agree....i had a like basically walmart bike. total no name POS. but it taught me to take care of my stuff and once i showed my parents i was responsible () and i saved up enough they went 50/50 with me when i decided to buy my specialized rockhopper from john henry. after that they were done. have paid my way since then.

sure if a parent buys their kid a $5000 its gonna get ridden. but it fails tot each them a greater lesson in the overall scheme of things we call life. that you cant always get your way, you need to learn to save money, take care of your things etc.
i actually dont mind it when parents do this. sure they have disfunctional kids but its one more sales for the shops that keep them in business and gives money back to the companies so we can see more cool stuff next year

Hehe, I didn't start it to argue over anything, it's just that I finally saw some biking in an ad, and I thought it was gonna be an intense 10 year old hitting up a drop.

I wonder if they would sponsor you if you asked? You never know...

One thing I always respected was a kid that earned his props from the way he/she rode and not by the bike that was ridden.

Some people out there feel they can earn respect by buying it (as in, buying a super expensive bike, or worse, their parents buying them a super expensive bike), and then sit around on the trails and put down other people's bikes, while their own skill is average at best.

I think the most props goes out to the kid that's got the cheapest, worst bike (because that's all they can afford), but charges as hard as they can on it. Especially when they're better riders than people with bikes worth ten times as much. That's respect.

That said... it still gives me the shivers to watch a kid boost on a sub $500, 'cause I'm always dreading the time they get massive equipment failure on landing...

Didn't Cdn. Tire sponsor Steve Bauer in some road racing events?

I remember Cdn. Tire selling Steve Baur labelled bike stuff a few years ago.

i was a born addict.

i rode my trike down the stairs twice when i was in my toddler years and didnt fall off either time. i just smoked in to a wall and my mom said i was laughing.

as for bikes i got my first XC bike in grd 9 and my first marzocchi fork, Z1 Wedge :) last year. then picked up my first dually in october of this year. Scream.

ive been riding for a while. but as for actual freeriding/downhill sorta stuff only about a year. before that it was just basically aggro-XC i guess you could call it. i did a lot of old schol urban assault when i first started (i had an 18" Zonic DS1 w/ 3" '97 Manitou FSR) and i was doin the hardcore like 5 footers to flat and stuff and going off stairs to flat and man...back in the day :D
