It sucks not having anyone to ride with, and in my opinion riding should be part social.

You would be surprised at who you can meet on the lifts. There's been a few times that I have been riding by myself (Which I don't like BTW) and I have just talked to people on the lift. Guaranteed you will find someone who will invite you along for a rip with them.

Ha! Get used to it. You're more than likely to experience that to a certain degree for the rest of your riding career. Wayy to many kids and adults are into dj and gravity assist riding. Barely anyone appreciates the broadness of the sport anymore, which means riding it all! I dislike riding by myself and find that the best rides are with others. Unfortunately it doesn't happen as often as I'd like.

Yes, there are a large number of exellent trails. Glad to hear you are discovering them Make sure you hit Shit Happens and Big Kahuna before they get taken out by construction.
Lady G, alot of those trails have been around for over 20 years. Those where the one's I learned to ride on years ago.

I dont think little spearhead is around anymore... but for any one willing to earn the descent, check out Billy Epic. And for Shit Happens and Big Kahuna, a ton of Shit Happens is already gone! lame. Big Kahuna is still fully intact though.

only the last bit of shit happens has been disturbed...the main line will remain, and we (worca) has already received monies from the rainbow deveopment that's gone into SH, AI, BK, and we met with the legacy land developers last week and expressed our expectation that they re-route/re-build the portion on their land that will be impacted by the development, and they fully agreed.....

Good to hear you met that skid Ian. He's one of Whistler's mountain bike originals.
Don't forget to check out the Emerald Forest trails down near the Bayshores. Oh, and can't forget the old classic Cut Yer Bars.
There used to be a guide book of Whistler trails don't know if they still print them. At one point they even made nice map of the trails in a nice Top map style.

Reality is you can't force others to ride. They either love the sport or they don't.
Speaking from experience, I started riding the trails at 13 and spent 90% of it by myself. Sure I connected with people here and there. And most those I rode with where adults.
Looking back now, sure I wish I had a group to be with. But overall I'm glad that I did it by myself. I got to see parts of Whistler that most people didn't see. I've seen wolves, Deer, a Moose, both Black and Grizzlies, and numerous other animals.
Worry less about the kids and such who don't ride. Just go ride the trails of Whistler.

Is that a trivia question? Here's my guess, In Whistler I'd say 99.9% of the locals kids..Dude its Whistler !Do you have any idea how much it cost to be able to leave up there WITH KIDS???
A VERY large majority of them a rich kids or at least their parents are very comfortable financially...
I kinda like riding byself but its hard to improve like that but I think things are slowly changing and you 'll start to see a new trend with more young pinners in town.

I'm 37. I'm old enough to remember when the Village was the garbage dump, Petro Can was Gulf, Patrolskid drove a VW Van, the school was across Village Way from the Conference centre, and the Keg was down in the Bayshores.
The Wolves I saw on the Valley Trail the first year it was open. It was on the section between Alpine and the Bayshores.

When my dad bought our place in the 70's out in Emerald I thought it was way too long a drive. Looking back now, he was brilliant, we are no where near the village silliness.
And was riding Shit Happens and Big Kahuna years later 60 seconds out my front door.
Oh, and before I forget. I'm old enough to recall watching Whistler's first ever World Cup type race. The 1979 Super G which was won by Ken Read. Back when hay bales where considered advanced safety systems.

Max, it's not that kids don't like riding DH, it's just that mots of them don't know what they have and how lucky they are to live in Whistler. If any of those 10 kids who ride left town for 2 weeks, they'll be stoked to be riding ANYTHING. You know, not everyone feels up to 2 hours of DH right after school, especially when the park is only open til 5:30. I do it some days, but usually a lot of us want to just take it easy and have a chill sesh at the djs or skatepark. On an early dismissal or weekend, you can bet all of those kids will be up on the hill riding DH.

ok tuumbaq , i'm calling you out on this one . . . . because you obviously have the wrong impression about who actually lives here .
a great number of folks who live here and are raising families , are folks who are in the service / tourism business . are you familiar with the wages those types of jobs pay ? not the type of wages that support DH bikes , let alone DH bike racing for the kids . i'm not saying there aren't some ( very ) rich people who have places here , and some of them do live here , but generally , the people and place is not that different from say , squamish .
MP rider , i think i understand the point of this thread , but instead of worrying about things you can't change , you should feel lucky that you have parents who can afford and are willing to make sacrifices so that you can participate in things like DH mountain bike racing , and alpine ski racing .
make your friends where you find them . i've met some interesting people from places i've never heard of here in the park , and while they may not turn out to be lasting , lifelong friends , they usually make good company for a couple of laps , and a beer afterwards .
ps . no beer for you

Skid is right with what he said. And to add to what Skid says about the bike park. There are alot of people who go and live in Whistler who ride all the other trails in the valley. Because that's what the can afford and barely touch the bike park. Well not unless they do it the hard way via Khyber.
In the end it's not about where you ride in Whistler or whether you ride a dually or a HT. All that matters is that you ride your bike and enjoy the trails that the entire valley has to offer.

I do realize how lucky i am to live in such an amazing place and to have parents that support me(i am not on my own for bike finances now though). I take advatage of what I have, I try to ride every day! I am just surprised that there are not many (sorry cooper, but there are not many kids that take advantage of the park) that use this wonderful thing they have. Skid, its not many parents can afford to support a kid with a DH bike. But the average teenager definatley could afford it if they worked hard enough. I think cooper has bought all of his riding gear for this season with his own money. Two full bikes...... dang :( no beer for me!

All English men, who ride are cool (except chavs, but most of you won't understand that anyway).
Edit: I'm lucky, my parents are not to hard up, so they can help me out. A good trick is to show them videos of trails you do, and they will put more money into keeping your bike working properly :)
