Eh? Darren Pokoj? Didn't know he was a BMX racer and he's not on the Aussie team.

http://www.abc.net.au/olympics/2008/results/cb/mens-bmx-individual.htm?result=s27405

Jared is however a pretty damn good BMX'er and is a good chance of a medal.

Do you mean Michal Prokop?

Graves killed it in quarterfinals; 1st, 2nd, and 1st. I hope he keeps it up and takes gold for the MTBers!

I'll have to make sure my job finishes up in time to watch the semis at 3 tomorrow.

actually they have a rear brake, but the only time you'd use it is to avoid a crash. i'm floored at the height of the start ramp :|

When you spend 100 mil on a fake openning ceremony a couple grand for paved corners is a drop in the bucket.

There's been another thread started here:

Maybe a moderator type could merge them.

ACC's roots were in BMX before mnt. That's why she's so damn fast. Can't wait to see Sammy Cools taking on a full rack.

Surprised nobody has pointed out that the UCI track in Victoria is essentially going to waste. The track itself is in terrible condition, and I don't think has been used much at all this year. The ABA track accross the Velodrome is totally buff, and in superb shape, even though it has traditional dirt corners.

Nanaimo is a gorgeous track. Extremely well maintained facility. My favorite, w/ Ridge a close second.

Wayne P
08-21-2008, 08:26 AM
Our CCA track is going to be plowed because nobody is willing to run it. Seems like a theme with BMX racing.

The ABA track in town is run as a money making outfit (franchise) and thus is regularly maintained.

Dude
08-21-2008, 08:33 AM
The common misconception is that ABA tracks make a lot of money. Not true. Yes, ABA is a "for profit" org, but a lot of the cash flows back into the tracks, and to the riders- specifically pros.

The tracks themselves are volunteer run. Langley is considered a "successful" track, but nobody here is making money- just blood, sweat, and tears- like Ridge, Action, or any other track for that matter.

We've briefly discussed paved berms and a new track. We're due for a new one. The paved berms add another $10-$20K to the budget, and the only way to get there is through fundraising / donation. Nanaimo had the time to pave donated by the paving company, and they bought the raw materials at cost...so they were able to get it done for ~$10K.

Wayne P

From what I hear the Kamloops ABA chapter are hurting financially. It seems to be a hard thing to first of all run it successfully and then make money at, especially without a population base to support it.

Dude
08-21-2008, 10:31 AM
Wouldn’t be surprised Wayne.

Locally, it just isn’t a money making venture. People are involved for the love of the game. There is a popular misconception amongst the CCA crowd that the ABA being “for profit” means people are getting rich off racing. Not true. The org may be “for profit”, but each track is “Not for profit”, meaning every dime coming in gets put back into the facility.

Dude
08-21-2008, 10:32 AM
BTW Wayne...don't you have little ones now? Get yourself a cruiser big man, and get yourself and the kids out to the track!

ACC simply wanted it more, and raced a very savvy final.

If you watched any of the Worlds, Reed was unstoppable, w/ ACC in a distant second. That final move Reed tried was "balsy", but ACC deffinitely had the high side, w/ speed and momentum on her side. I don't think she had to alter her line one bit because of the contact.

Impressive. Too bad for Sammy. Seems she was a little too excited, and didn't handle her bike well off lip of the 1st table.

Walker is full on a total babe. Mrs. Dude is convinced Ken Coools must be tapping that. Kenny is pretty smooth with his game, apparently.

wow!!! So great to watch BMX get a lot of attention.
Sammy Cools, this is the women who has put so much (think of her supporting family ) to get to the Olympics ,big respect!
Scott Erwood, coming back from a injury to win the mens title in Abbotsford, then a big runoff with Alta'a Jim Brown . Scott even though he never made it to the finals still did Canada proud.
As a former Bmx track operator who operated under both sanctions ABA/CCA both indoor/outdoor the politics are very chilling.
U.S. rider Donny Robinson made his pro debut at Abbotsford indoor.
Such a great sport ,watching it on TV wow!
Go Canada Go.

They're all using clipless now too. Many in XC race shoes too. Some have suggested a best of three motos format instead of the single. I think that would be better too.
