View Full Version : What aches/injuries are you carrying so far this season?

Well we're very well into the '08 riding season. Who's out so far and who's riding with what injuries/pains?

As we all know, Helena is out for the season with that broken ankle.

Myself, I hurt my hand recently. Middle finger is sore from the impact, and last joint on the pinky finger hyperextended/dislocated and is now very tender and weak. A couple of small scrapes on the elbows but nothing restricting. All in all I'm pretty stoked to still be in this shape given how much I'm working and riding this season.

Thank god for athletic tape huh?

My old broken back injury from 2005 is always nagging me and on some days, keeps me at home or keeps me off my big bike and on my road bike. After a stellar trip to Sun Peaks and getting spanked on "Sweet Ones" skinnies, my left hand is about double the size its supposed to be and a wicked cool purple colour. It is a pretty cool injury because it looks more spectacular than it feels and it hasn't kept me off my bike.

Hematomas all over, pedal bites a plenty and good helping of ligament and tendon damage.
So far not a bad season.

Tweaked rotator cuff. Broke the golden rule of washing out and put my arm out rather than rolling out of it. Dumbass!

fractured my wrist and injured other parts in my hand in april, and I have just gotten to ride a few weeks ago with no pain! :D

annd at silverstar i took a tumble on downtown and hurt my pinky :( nothing major, just a little sore.

Other than that just random achy bones and muscles and a couple new scars!

I took a bad fall at the Vedder yesterday, I misjudged the gap at the end of two cents, gave er and cased it. Hit the ground pretty hard getting tangled up in the bike. I've got a sore wrist which could be fractured (? it's hard to bend without pain) road rash on my elbow/shoulder and I'm missing a good chunk of skin from the side of hip, to the point where you can see white flesh. Today i'm unbelievably sore especially my neck, ibuprofen/ T3's will be my best friend for a while.

BTW: Matt, I'll definitely need a softer spring for my dhx cause I was getting bucked left and right on the way down on the main road after the accident, definitely way over sprung!

Sprain/Complete tear of ankle in March, loss of flexibility
Sore shoulder (rotator)
Normal bruises
Some weird pain in my middle fingers from the lift assist parks.

Sprained ankle, dislocated right shoulder twice in 6 weeks

Broken tailbone (now) bruised ribs and lung, concussion (7), broken knuckle. Thankfully that is it so far. The US open kicked my ass in one section and Mont Sainte Anne was not nice to me either.
Pretty good season so far though, too bad that it has rained more here this summer than Seattle.

this season:
minor concussion
bruised knee
sprained ankle
sprained/tweaked back
minor bumps and bruises (upper leg bruises....hip/lower rib bruise)

thats about it so far..haven't lost any riding time

let's see..
mcl tear and sprained hip in february
sprained thumb at arduum (june?) which i keep aggravating so it's healing slowly
1st degree separated shoulder, concussion and bruised/lacerated hip (other one) a month ago
sore right wrist - think it's related to the thumb injury
hematoma on my left leg from sun peaks 2 weeks ago
small hematoma on my right leg from this weekend
various scrapes/bruises that seem to be acquired and heal on a vicious cycle..

haven't lost much riding time - 10 days due to the concussion/sep shoulder, everything else seems to be bearable

all in all more injuries this season than most, but that's just the way it goes

Somethings up with my shoulder, I'm not sure what and am afraid to get it looked at. I don't even recall hurting it, I just assume it's old age.

It doesn't seem to bother me riding but the day after I can barely raise my arm up.

Broken collar bone + various other minor scrapers. The broken C-bone only really put me out for 3.5 weeks until I "xc'ed" around.

I ate shit on the mountain bike recently, face first into a rock, with a XC lid on. Stitches across the eye brow, and a toasted rear derailer, and hanger.

Then I followed up that dazzling display of bike handling skills by plowing into the back of a parked car on my road bike. I've never been more embarrassed in my life. Cars stopped in both directions, people came out from apartments... I just wanted to disappear. Road bike is toast... Carbon fibre is cruel. :fruit::crazy::cry:

I have a knee that is the size of a grapefruit, and my wrists are really sore from breaking my fall.

Broken collarbone. Couldn't just break it in two, had to turn it into 3 pieces and have them displaced over an inch apart. Couldn't have surgery due to a stupid small infection and have been off the bike for 6 weeks. If that wasn't bad enough, the surgeon just told me it is goig to be another 6 before i'm back on the bike.

Apart from some scrapes and bruises, I just have a very swollen, bruised, sprained middle finger. Who knew that hiking/walking could be so dangerous... a slip and a fall and there goes my finger, landed straight on it, perfectly extended. Somehow it even managed to bruise my palm and two joints and generally mess with things. Doubt I will be able to grip my bars properly for a bit. Oh well, it's only pain... off to do some more hiking.

Are you sure your rebound just isnt cranked up too much?? What weight spring do you have and how much do you weigh?

As for myself ive been good so far and the only thing aside from cuts scrapes and bruises is a tweaked left shoulder that just doesnt feel quite right but doesnt really affect riding.

I believe the rebound is cranked up quite a bit, I have it set like that after reading the fox manual on their website. Guess I should slow it down a bit, I have a 450lb x 2.37 spring and I'm 130lbs. Thanks for asking btw.

Ill chime in a bit more just to try and clairify what i was thinking. You say that you were being bucked left right and center, and that your rebound is being cranked up a lot then whats probably going on is that your rear end is decompressing so fast that you are having a hard time keeping traction and control. Having too stiff of a rear spring shouldnt cause that problem, it would only make the rear suspension stiffer than it needs to be for your riding.

Fractured hand early on.

Dislocated my big toe in half, it was literally upside down. Which wouldn't be so bad other than all the tendon damage that happened with it. I'm still feeling that one (Plus side is biking hurts less than walking! :D).

And currently sprained and messed up my hand/fingers again (I need to stop putting my hand out when I fall).

Somethings up with my shoulder,

Mine has been aching a lot lately, and I don't remember doing anything.
I have had numerous scrapes and bangs, nothing serious except for the very large hematoma in my groin which has gone down leaving me with a hard lump and some unpleasant nerve damage on the inside of my thigh.

How long before Dude comes in here complaining that we all need to stop looking for sympathy and HTFU? :)

I started the season with a nice concussion after a drop crumbled out from under me.
Doing well after that, bought a hardtail, drop to flat, took out the back.

That's healing up well now, and core strength is at it's highest in 08' so far.

Numerous cuts and bruises, but that's to be expected.

knee popped saturday...still waiting for the swelling to go down to get a diagnosis.

same here, on sunday. tree: 1, knee: 0.

no popping sound, just the tree putting the smack down on the side of my knee as i was falling. knee is swollen and unable to bear my weight, so i'm on crutches.

diagnosis generally means MRI right? i understand doctors exams alone generally can't tell you the full extent and nature of the injury. often they'll just say it's a "sprain" which is fairly meaningless. my doctor said she would get me on the list for an MRI, but i've heard the wait can be ridiculously long. anyone use a private MRI? how much do they cost?

can anyone recommend a good sports medicine clinic on the north shore? i was thinking about www.northshoresportsphysio.com at Capilano College because that's near my house.

Broke and shattered my elbow last August, had surgery, the doctors had to replace an entire elbow joint (yay, I have a Carbon firbe elbow joint!) and I still have a metal plate and 10 screw in my left elbow, buuuuuut:

Today was the first day that my elbow didn't bother me at all while riding downhill and hitting jumps, didn't even notice that it's still severly injured. :)

The only drawback: I slipped a pedal while being in mid-air and smashed my left shin into my left pedal. Wow, that hurt a lot, first time in 3 years of riding that I slipped a pedal and hit it with my shin. You can see where the pins punctured the skin and it wouldn't stop bleeding, but apart from that I'm quite healthy right now. :)

sore foot from a fall @ whistler
shins are healing up well from a fustercluck of pedal scrapes
had a pretty sore hip from another fall, but seems to be better
sore legs from riding 45-50 of the last 60 days

the worst, though, is the bloody mosquito bites!

Do not wanna play the doc here, but my brother has similar symptoms and he is starting rehab (?) sessions next week since it seems that his shoulder joint on the right side seems to have gone kinda rigid due to overuse (?)...boy is me english crappy at the moment. too tired.

Anyways, maybe the same with you guys? Check with a medic/person in the know. I am sure that the right amount of tlc and good physio can change it for the better. :)

Myself, I only have had the odd bruise and scratch on me shins from riding xc, apart from having had a big bruise with some big ass scrapes on my left upper leg (did not want to face plant again so I just let go of the grips. There are still tire marks on my shorts.). Glad that I did not break my femur. :)

And a swollen and smashed right index finger from building stuff. Finger was between a post and the handle of the hammer.

My mom was stricken with a case of bursitis and tendonitis on her shoulder and needed surgery to fix it. Her symptoms were similar to yours, and unfortunately, mine too.

Have a doc check it out, and probably an x-ray. Hopefully it isn't anything serious, and some therapy could get you back on track.

Got my MRI report back this morning. Hmmm, this kinda sucks.

Summary: Complete tear of the ACL.
Grade 2 MCL strain and associated LCL strain.
Moderate bone contusions.

Who here has had ACL reconstruction and how's it going since? I know it varies, but I'm curious if, in most cases, you can get back more or less to 100% (or close to it) or will there be lingering issues? This is a discussion I'll obviously have to have with my doctor and physio, just curious about other peoples experiences with similar injuries.

bummer. seems to be a relatively common injury. my advice... if you can afford it, get a private MRI now. i heard the wait for an MRI in BC is 6 months or more. if you're in Vancouver, have your doctor give you a referal to www.specialtymri.com in Richmond. they have a dedicated extremity mri for knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, etc. i called them, had the mri next day, 2 days later i had the results in an email, $475. not what i hoped to see, but at least now i can get started. wait list for MRI + wait list for surgery + physio/rehab = a long time not riding or boarding. so i'm keen to get this rolling asap.

I had ACL surgery in April (I also had a Grade 3 MCL tear and tibial plateau bruising). Flat gravel trail riding at 6 weeks; easy Silverstar and easy Whistler trail riding at 3 months and steady and more aggressive riding at 4 months (9 day trip to the Swiss Alps followed by 4 days of bike park riding). The knee seems to be doing very well - its just the lingering mental issues (although, I know that I'm clinically not 100% yet so I'm sure it will come in time!) From this and other's experience you may be slower or faster in recovering but generally, everyone I know is back to 100% at the one year mark. Good luck!

I had my ACL repaired in Oct 2006. (I also had a partial MCL and meniscus tears which weren't operated on). Was back on stationary bike within a month, road biking outside after 4 months and mountain biking after 6 months. I felt I could have been back on 'light mountain biking duties' sooner, but the surgeon advised me that the graft typically reaches 80% strength after 6 months and 100% after 12-18 months. I didn't want the risk of tearing the graft and being off the bike for even longer.

I'm now back and the knee is great, although becomes a little stiff in the cold (could be old age too!). I found an unusual streak of dedication when it came to all the rehab exercises and physio and I think that really helped. I'd second Sparkplug's comments about the mental bit - the physical aspects healed a lot quicker than the mental!

Good luck with it all!

High speed riding near Big Bear without elbow pads. First point of impact was my elbow. 5 stictches internally and 6 on the outside. Bone shards and gravel still floating around as per after sewing xrays. Happened in May but I'm all good again! Always wear elbows now.
