You may wanna grab a coffee and sit down before reading this one....
Aug 6th, 7pm - The Sun had been beating down all day on Pipeline as a 33 degree day finally hit Vancouver for the summer. Jordan "Fogel" Virgl volunteered to water the track beforehand and worked his best to keep the track sprayed while doing his best fireman impression for the onlooking girls.
The track was in great shape, and it looked to be a promising race. Racers were rolling in and registering while trying to stay out of the sun and keep their body temp cool waiting to see how the evening played out.
As the 1st round of the 3 moto format was winding down, and the race was just starting to ramp up, we had a casualty. An incredibly important member of the team broke down. The air compressor. The rings inside the compressor looked like they cooked and it looked like the compressor had pushed out it's last psi. After performing beautifully for 2 years and 20 plus races, the gate was rendered useless, and it looked grim. But after a 15 minute delay, Ken "Raoul" Faubert saved the day and returned to the park with a new compressor from home.
The crowd was then petitioned to see how we should continue with the race. There was resounding support to finish the 3 motos and include the Mains and Conci's.
In the U15 class, the 3 way battle between Aidan MacDonald, Scott Willson and Avery Lunggren came to an end with Avery holding onto his points lead after another great win. Soctt Willson held onto his #2 Spot for the Series Finale, finishing only 1 point ahead of Aidan MacDonald.

In the Open Men's Class, Jev Bjorsell also held onto his points lead and took the Series Win over Curtis Jensen, Tim Gadd and Rory Ennis. To give you an idea of the progression of this class, there were at least 3 guys in the Open Men's class that were hitting the Pro Line confidently and using it to gain spots in their motos. 3 races ago, no one would touch the big set. Nice work Boys.

In the Women's class, the turnout looked small, but the it seemed more like were getting the riders to come out, just not all on the same day! Debbie Cook and Rosemary Adams both took their wins in Open Women and Pro Women respectively.

In the Pro Men's Class, 7 riders came out to push the points hunt. Tyler Gorz came into the Final leading Everett Hoath by 2 points. It could have gone either way, but they looked to have a strong enough lead over Brian Onofrichuk, and Matt Stevens. But no one told John Starcevic that....
John showed up to the race, killed his gates, rode incredibly well and secured a spot in the Main, just edging out race organizer, Matt Stevens. Matt would go on to win the Conci and add 2 points to his series total.

But in the Main event, The racing was so tight that all riders ended up into the first turn all together, and showing the skill of these guys, no one tumbled, crashed, or slipped out. But Starcevic was at the front of the group. Brian Onofrichuk was all over his rear tire heading down the multi-lined 2nd straight and the group tightened up again going into the last turn. Brian O took the inside berm sending the rest of the riders outside and started gaining on Starcevic heading towards the finishline.

But the best sprinter out of all the Pro Class wouldn't have it go down that way. Everett Hoath pulled in between Starcevic and Onofrichuk to barely edge out Brian O for 2nd place. Gorz took the 4th spot, Brian Took 3rd and John Starcevic goes home with the win for the evening.
So what about the Series Points? How won the overall? With Starcevic's 6pt win, and Everett Hoath's 4pt 2nd place, we were left with a series tie. Check that...we were left with TWO Series Ties.
John Starcevic's win left him tied with Matt Stevens for 4th place, and Everett's last minute sprinting left him tied with Tyler Gorz for the overall lead!
Now we could go back through the rule book and argue over who won the last race, who placed better in qualifying, who may have missed races or some other technicality that would determine the winner. But here's the thing with 4x... Technicalities don't fly in this sport, especially with money on the line. It’s a sport based on tight, fast racing that benefits the smoothest strongest rider.
After taking a vote with the men left in the Pro Class, the decision was agreed to have a Race-Off. One more race of 4 riders to determine 1st & 2nd, 4th & 5th. The sun had set, the air had cooled but no one seemed to have left. The crowd waited anxiously to see one more race to determine the overall winner.
Gorz, Stevens, Starcevic and Hoath all rolled back into the gate for one more go at it. The last race in the hottest outdoor series in western Canada, and as the gate snapped down and the 4 remaining riders absolutely pinned it down the 1st straight. It was all on the line and the riders knew it.
Down the 2nd Straight it was still tight but positions started to form as Everett Hoath took the lead with Tyler Gorz half wheeling him in 2nd place. Stevens and Starcevic barreled down the 2nd straight side-by-each as all 4 railed the 2nd turn. The battle for 1st place started pulling away from the 4th-5th spot battle and into the 3rd turn. Hoath's sprinting came back into play as Everett took the win ahead of Tyler Gorz. Stevens & Starcevic's battle raged through the 3rd turn as shoulders bumped and banged, and Matt Stevens got John by the nub of a tire.
