Evenin' all!

I've arrived in town from Scotland, and ahead of buying my new full-suss frame, want to take my hardtail out to start sussing out the trails on the North Shore.

The bike is a DMR Trailstar LT Steel frameset, on DT-Swiss rims, Talas Fork and Juicy 5s and can handle a lot...what trails should I start out on?

Oh..and what's the current favourite freeride frame for the trails out here so I can start saving?

First thing, go to a local bike shop. Simon's on Robson, On Top, Deep Cove, just to name a few. Buy a copy of the trail maps for Cypress, Fromme, and Seymour. Will give you lots of info.

I would go down to your local bike shop and have a look around. I would recommend "On Top" (just above Queens on Lonsdale) and "North Shore Bike Shop" (Turn West on 16th on Lonsdale, and it will be up a few steps). They are really nice people in both shops, and have good bikes too.

Ask the people in the shop what bike is best for what and they will help you choose the right bike for you. But at the end of the day, It's your money so you can choose any bike that you like the looks of (as long as you have enough money :P )

I am also going to recommend the maps, but Fromme has a lot of fun trails. If you do go up there I would recommend Pipeline as a starting trail, because it is easy, and fun.

I second Fromme. If you are a true Shore newbie, try Floppy Bunny to Natural High to Griffin. Pipeline is a great trail though.

Cheers folks, Simons on Robson aint far from me so i'll head up there today and pick up some maps. Sounds like Fromme is the place to start.

you have to earn your gravity on fromme, but it's so worth it

fromme would be a perfect choice. because you can hike up and ride down a few times to hook up all the mellow trails to get back into it.

Hey Roy,

So what brings you to Vancouver then?

I'm from the borders so rode Glentress and Innerleithen XC a number of times, Jed Justice trail. Lived down south for years so most of my biking was at the Welsh centres - Afan, Coed, Snowdown (!!hardwork!!), but whenever I was back home i'd head to GT. Got a week in Morzine/Les Gets as well a few years back.

I'd be happy to head up Fromme with you. Bloke at Simons on Robson yesterday noted that a blast round UBC grounds would be good to get back into it, so i'll be throwing that into my ride home from work to give the bike a shakedown too - just been put together following shipment here. Then hittin Fromme in the not to distant...

Your hardtail should be great on all the north shore trails. Sounds like a nice set up.

As for trying a new bike, shop around to see what's out there and that would also fit your riding back home.

Cool! I lived in Penicuik, so used to ride glentress/pentlands mostly and occasionally innerleithen. I now live up at Univercity on Burnaby Mountain, compared to glentress, the trails up there are still quite technical/rooty and a good place to practice before heading to the shore so everybody here will tell you. I like em, only now beginning to think about heading to the shore.

As for what brings me here, came here on holiday two years ago snowboarding at whistler with a few days in vancouver and loved it. Manged to sort a transfer though my work to a sister company over here and basically loving it, the summer here kicks scotlands ass and if you ski/snowboard having the three ski hills on your doorstep and open at night is just awesome in the winter.

You should def head up to burnaby mountain, could poss do after work ride or early at the weekend. Also check out Burnaby Mountain Skills Park. there's some posts on here with pics, its kinda like the freeride area up at glentress.

I didn't. Wish I did. Could of got a good HT for the money I paid for my bike. oh well.

I wish I knew about the Burnaby mountain before I started riding. The first trail I ever did was was on Fromme and it kicked my ass :P But am really enjoying it now. I try to get to Fromme nearly every day.

actually i'm with Fitchy on that one, I rode the alps on a spesh hardrock some years back and had little problems till the fork failed mechanically.

Look out, the Scots are getting together, pretty soon they'll be invading us... Either that or drinking some Single Malt and falling down...

Now I'm really confused, so if you are born in a country, you are not of that country.

I think I'll just be Jamaican, they seem to have it going on down there mon.
