View Full Version : Sun Peaks vs. Mt. Washington
If you can only do one...which one is it?
For me, Sun Peaks is already winning based on travel and the fact it's not on a long weekend...but I've never been to either? Any idea what the courses are like?

Based on courses alone Mt. Washington is hard to beat. Its a racers course with a good mix of challenges throughout the course. From what I've heard the Sun Peaks is going to be ... uhhh ... interesting. Rumour has it that it'll be using much of the previously built World Masters Course that was apparently a straight shot down the mountain with rotor deep silt dust. I can't say I've heard any praise for the Sun Peaks course. If you're going to be riding anything other than the race course Mt. Washington has some fun trails well worth checking out.

I heard Sunpeaks was going to be all new.
Maybe I heard wrong, but more probably I'm just old.

Don't discount SP yet. I was ready to as well, but to their credit the boys up there have thrown together a national level race course. We had a walking meeting up there last week and we were pleasantly surprised with what we saw.
We have shaved off 45 seconds to 1 minute from the time by making the decision to start the race down from the previous start. This start will happen right by the the #4 road crossing (the first time you cross the road on the way down). For the first time, it won't start off the lift.
Yes, the course is being held on a portion of the old master's course, but it actually looks good now. Its been closed for 2 years and now its single track and tacky. Trust me, I loathed this course when it was first made, but with the revisions it will work out just fine. The upper section was the worst and that has been left out.
The finishing area will not go down arm pump, but will head left over top of the driving range and finish in the village like the good old days. This means less high speed chatter and more flowy single track.

Ok..im not a racer, but i have had the pleasure of riding almost every run on both hills. A race course that i have not done is a reality, but they would likely be combo's of a few runs, or parallel runs. i don't really think you can loose with either mountain. The terrain, is different but similar. The tech is jump, steep, structure, and a mix of every thing else. Take the one that works for Ur time table Tom. I think there will be a minimal amount of disappointment with both.
PS...SP has some decent night life for ap're race n ride...beer is cold and sweet at both spots.

Agreed about the night life....anyone remember that crazy night of mayhem after a race there summer of '02? One of the Lunds scaling buildings, some guy named Nordee (he is super old now I think haha) passing a bottle of tequila around the dance floor....2 bartenders and 1 waitress trying to serve 150 or so rowdy dh'ers....ahhhhh, that was a fun summer. I always liked sun peaks' race courses...actually wait, that's where I puked in the start gate - crazy how confining a full face and goggles can be when you're rockin' a horrible hang over haha.

Mt Washington is dealing with some trail closures right now. The condition are perfect though, the trails are dry and dont seem to get beat up very badly.
I like Sun Peaks for their variety. There are jump trails, Alpine single track, long flowy traila and obstacle trails. Check into the trail closures at Mt Wash, if they are still closed go to Sunpeaks.

Hit up the Peaks, then bust a move over to Harper and then the Ranch. Duh!
The reason I can only do one is that I am scheduled to work on-call the weekend of Sun Peaks, and probably the only weekend I can trade it for is the weekend of Mt. Washington.
SP is a superior mountain, IMHO. "The old days", 2002 as mentioned, the course was gnarly and a ton of fun. Long, and if they have cut out the top section, nice work.
Given the choice, SP for sure. Plus, w/ out the boat ride, cheaper, and accomodations near the lift. It's a great set-up.

Definitely Sun Peaks. It's going to be amazing. I rode it yesterday and it was soooo much fun. Even I am thinking of racing it cuz the fun potential is so high this year.

And the winner is...Sun Peaks.

We have another meeting up there this weekend looking at different options to the start of the race course. Should be interesting (in a good way).

It's not just the ferry...making the SP race is easier to work around my work on-call schedule.

Just say it Tom, Andrew has a peculiar odour and you just don't think you could tolerate it for a weekend. :)
We will be doing the timing for the race but will be riding when we aren't doing that.

I think it's patchouli...those island hippies are big on that stuff.
