661 one has come out with a revolutionary new pad system. Incorporating D3o ( www.d3o.com ) the pad is soft and flexible until a hard impact locks the molecules together forming a very protective Knee or Elbow pad.

Price?

Almost twice as much as in the states.

I think it was $179 for elbows and $189 for knees.

Beat me to it. That is what were selling them at.

All for a pad that won't do squat if you take a real crash on them or hit a rock.

I dunno. I think the jury is still out on that one. Pretty pricy though and will D30 be better than a hard plastic? I can see it on elbows because hard elbow pads seem to never fit well for me so maybe a gel pad would stay put better? I definetly find the concept interesting but I don't want to be the guinea pig.

i went and checked them today.. no way I'd drop that money on them...

Actually, the d3o pads transfer about a third of the energy to the knee/elbow vs a hard shell.

You can give all the numbers you want, but I've tested them out and there's not a chance I'd risk taking a serious crash (especially on rocks) with those on my knees.

My numbers are about as useless as your "testing" if you haven't had a serious crash with them.

If they couldn't perform in the light testing I gave them, I still believe it wouldn't be wise to wear them when you actually need good knee protection.

They need a hard impact unless you were driving a good chunk of your body weight into the pad its not going to harden up. I will try to get a demonstration video sometime this week.

Much better video than we would have posted. We didnt get the shovel demonstration but the gel and the hammer is pretty cool

Yeah - I can't quite believe that shovel action. You guys should get one of your junior team members to 'volunteer' to showcase that.

They offer more protection then the Chicken wing thing. I think I mite get a pair.

That is an aluminum snow shovel not steel, but still.

They don't do much at all. That was the biggest problem I saw with them.

Hmmm... would like to see a test on that.

Ideally there would be a glove version, would be great to have that stuff sewn into the finger and knuckle coverings of a glove.

You can get that from Spyder. It will cost you an arm and both legs.

How did you test them?

I essentially tried everything that they show off in those test videos but it didn't seem to work as well as I expected from the footage I saw heh. Drove them (on my knee) into a wall, hit my knee on the ground, jabbed them with some shop tools (this was where I was careful as I was suspect of how they would work on pointy hits). This was where I felt it suffered the most.

I am used to wearing Tomcats however, and the sheer difference in thickness of the two pads probably makes a big difference in how much impact actually gets to your kneecap in a crash.

Or I could just have too high expectations for pads and need to HTFU. :D

Yeah I'm either too smart or too afraid to put one on and smoke it with a hammer. Now if a shop rat will volunteer????

Interesting technology. I think I will let it have some NSMB field testing for about a year before i make up my mind though.
