The Canadian BMX team is expected to announce on Friday that it has secured an Olympic spot on the men's side for Beijing, a source has told CBCSports.ca.
The berth was earned at the world championships this past Saturday in Taiyuan, China, after Scott Erwood, of Surrey, B.C., passed a Belgium rider at the finish line in one of the qualifying heats.
"We should get the final confirmation by June 6 from the International Federation," Lorraine Lafrenière, chief executive officer of the Canadian Cycling Association, told CBCSports.ca in an e-mail.
While Erwood would seem to be the logical choice to represent Canada at the Summer Games, Airdrie, Alta., native Jimmy Brown, who trains regularly with national coach Tanya Dubnicoff, could still get the nod over his B.C. counterpart.
Erwood broke his wrist during a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) event in September 2007, and missed five months of competition. However, Erwood rebounded to win his second consecutive Canadian national championship last month in Abbotsford, B.C.
Brown, who turns 19 on June 26 and is the Canadian junior champion, made a name for himself after advancing to the semifinals of the world championships last season in Victoria.
If either competitor isn't named for the team on Friday, a race-off between the two at an event in California in late June may decide who receives the Olympic spot.
"Scott Erwood and Jimmy Brown combined would make for one lethal athlete," said CBC BMX analyst Kevin O'Brien.
"Separately, the two are very different riders. Erwood, who gets better gate starts, is the stronger rider on the first half of the track and has a more experience. Erwood has also comeback from a wrist injury with more intensity. However, Brown has earned the reputation as a competent and more aggressive pack rider."
Sam Cools, of Airdrie, Alta., has all but secured an Olympic berth on the women's side. Cools finished fifth in the women's final at the world championships on Saturday, taking advantage of a mid-race spill by two French competitors.
