Registration is now open for the July 13th Cardiac Classic. Go nuts everyone!
http://www.westcoastracing.ca/cardiac
Early bird registration prices should make this an excellent value on the BC Cup scene, with full BBQ lined up as part of your reg fee. We've tried to keep fees low (especially for the kids) to make it accessible to everyone, and hope that a good turnout will make it work for us instead of relying on higher entry fees.
There's all sorts of new information on the event page also, with planned number of laps by category (you can always "bail" to the Citizen categories if you're a licensed rider but not an XC geek ) and presenting sponsors, including one big shout out to a local shop and great guy well-known to this forum who is coming up big for us in support of this new event. Check out the event page for the identity of this mystery man!
The new version of the course map now linked from the course descriptions section is much improved, created and hosted courtesy of Skifreak who saved us with his superior web skillz (thanks Colin...)
Post up any questions here, and please spread the word especially if you know any kids that ride, since we've got something for just about every age and skill level.
We're still short a few course marshals on our volunteer roster, so if you have anyone coming out to watch you race, they can get wined, dined, and schwagged with VIP status courtesy of WCR just by hanging out at a designated corner - and preferably making lots of noise in the process.

"Master 40+ women, 1 lap"

Probably no need for a participant cap with the number laps required in the second wave, eh :D

Awwww sheesh. More laps = more to love.
We actually feel pretty bad about the paltry lap counts that we're offering, since it would obviously be that much more bang for your entry bucks to get in more laps for the same reg fee. Sadly though, we do have a schedule to be maintained so you will probably be stuck with the meagre lap counts currently on offer.

the 4 lap count pretty much explains the extremely serious and dedicated xc training on bby mtn ATM. i was fixing a flat on nicoles last thurs night and was passed by at least 10 riders with nary a comment. funny stuff
Attaboy Matt.
Well, I guess it's time to get my Citizens licence done, and go press "enter".

couple questions for ya regarding estimated times to complete the course.
1. how long to do three laps
2. how long to do four laps
based on a reasonably fit rider using an all-mountain (6" front and rear) type of bike?
how long for the more fit guys on xc race type bikes?
thanks

We think that the mens' Pro/Elite winner will take down the start and finish sections + 4 laps of the upper loop in a shade less than 2 hours. Keep in mind we're talking about a top 10 Canada Cup type of racer, who would be a contender for the overall win at the ToM for example. They haul going up, and on these types of trails the quickest racers will cruise damn fast going down too.
The steepness of much of the climbing will really spread the field though, both within the Elite and Citizen classes, so after this we're really shooting in the dark to some degree trying to estimate the range of lap times for other riders. It's very difficult to guess at, since there's so many levels of "fit". One person's definition of reasonably fit may be completely different than another, and being a first year event we don't have any previous experience to go by.
I'd guess that a finish time of 2:00 - 2:30 for start/finish sections plus the 3 upper laps for a reasonably fit rider on a 6+6 bike would be a pretty good performance, but that's really a stab. 4 laps? Well, the sky is the limit on that one, although we'd prefer not to have to send out search parties. We will need to have some type of time cap on finishes for the 9:00am start. Ideally we'd like to have everyone finished by 11:00am so that 2nd start at 11:15am has a clear run climbing up from Barnett. If there's 1st start riders still up top at that time, we'll probably have to hold them at the top until the descent is clear. Still working out the fine details on that issue.
Hey, for my 8 year old kid to race the little ripper race, does he need a licence, or is there a 1 day insurance avaialable?
Hell, is there a one day licence available for Citizens? This is likely the only BC Cycling race I'll do this year.
Answered most my questions- intraweb is a wonderful tool. I think this has staying power.
I got the one day temp licence.
For my kid, though, the race says 8-14 years can do the mini, but in registering, they only allow 10 & up. Can you fix that?

Thanks - I think the request for that fix has already been submitted. Yes, ages 8-9 that have decent experience and abilities can opt to enter in the "short course" that's on Hang Your Hat, and the parallel doubletrack for the outbound. We haven't quite decided whether to break up the youth short course strictly by age or by number of laps, but we'll figure something out and post details in advance. We want to give the little suckers a good workout and fun time, but not push them too far.

I ran two laps of the loop last night on my XC rig with my buddy on his 5&5 and we did it in maybe 1 hr 30 min - 1 hr 45 min. We weren't really givin'er though and stopped a bunch of times at most of the trail intersections. As for fitness, I'd say we're both reasonably fit ... fitter than most DH/FR types but not nearly as fit as most top level roadie/XC types.
It that a full loop, i.e.: starting from the skills park at Barnet, up, two loops, and then back to the park via "Hang your Hat"?

Any chance you want to "marshal" a spot on the course? Lots of free food and drink (no beer regrettably) comes with the role, ideally delivered right to you on course by our volunteer services crew. Makes it easy to relax and alternate encouraging or heckling your buds as they suffer - oops, I mean "enjoy" - their event.

Nope ... we didn't do the death climb from Barnett Hwy ... just two laps of the "race loop".

Wicked - thanks for the PM Vlad.

Suitable nick to complement "Cardiac".
I would put myself into a similar class you describe...above average fitness, but certainly not an XC or road pinner.
I did the complete course a couple weeks back w/ one lap up top, including (in error) doing the lower Jim's Jungle to the very bottom of North Road Trail, all the way up (suppose to go upper JJ down to Powerline, up to Pumphouse, then in to North Road). That took me 1:15. I figure adding a second lap will put me in the 2:00 range.
Two laps will earn me several beers and hero status from my children.
BTW: after this race, my little bike will be hung up all July and August in favor of some DH. Seriously missing the big bike.

Hey Racers, BBY mountain's first trailday of the year is being held this Saturday June 7th. We're working on the section of trail connecting GearJammer to Upper Cut on the Cardiac Classic race course.
Here's the thread on the trailday: http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?t=111538
Hope to see you folks out Saturday!
