Are you up for the challenge?

My work gets behind it. I think we had 25 percent of the company ride last year. We're doing 2 weeks this year. yesterday and today we brought in someone to do bike fittings, Monday we have a big pancake breakfast and have a BBQ on the last day.

I just mapped registared and set up my route. 11kms each way. Guess I should give the commuter a tune-up this weekend.

I hope this is the kick in the butt I need to commute all the time.

We even have prizes and free breakfast next week at work. Cool thing for sure.

We are getting squat. Although I did lose a bunch of wieght when I started and that drives the old fatties nuts everytime I wheel a bike around.
That's good enough for me!

Company I work with is putting a new bike rack next week. Our safety officer is a commuter (as am I) and we are trying to get as many others to ride as possible.

To me, commuting is a great way to keep in shape for mountain biking. The environment is another benefit but I'm selfish about my fitness...

I'm in. I'll try to bike to work and home all 6 days. No reason why I shouldn't be able to...

Well, as many of you know I work at the university and since we are up on the hill only handful out of thousands of employees actually bike up here. I do it because it is a good way to start my morning, I am alert when I get in, and I can justify drinking beers in the evening :D

There is also a prize every day of the bike week one person gets a new bike ;) Brand new commuter could not hurt anyone, could it?

Oh crap it's next week. I though it was in mid June. I was planning to ride all five days but have a physio and dentist appointment next week. Hmm this could get interesting.

I live in Marpole, which is pretty much the lowest point in Vancouver. I work downtown Vancouver which is also one of the lowest points in Vancouver. It looks like I've got a (safe) choice of the Cypress an Ontario Street bikeways, is one flatter than the other, or is one better than the other for traffic stops?

Rat

Marpole to downtown is a great commute on Cypress bike route.

BrownBear

Yeah, Cypress to Burrard Bridge has a better flow than Ontario.

Pretty easy ride in this morning. It's all downhill from our place mid Lonsdale to 2nd Narrows. Then again it's all down via Gilmore to work near Willingdon and Canada Way.

Going home is going to be a long climb. I think I may beg for mercy with my single 42t front ring.

cyclist.ca
05-26-2008, 10:08 AM
and no mercy will be given to ya :D

My climb to SFU was great, took my roadie and took it easy... listened to some tunes along the way. Going home should be fast.

unless you are using your teeth to pedal, dentist shouldn't be a problem for you.

When I go home I'll be wet. Stupid rain.

sprinter
05-26-2008, 08:23 PM
Sometimes it pays to work late. By the time I left work the rain had passed in Burnaby and the road had dried out.

As a bonus the VACC had a booth setup on my bike route home so I got a free cookie. :D

It is a problem as it's in the middle of the day and I would not have enough time to ride there and back. I plan to ride the rest of the week.

how is your team doing? Mine has two dozen people signed up and only a handful biking... we aren't even on the radar :(

shirk
05-27-2008, 11:42 AM
My team of one is moving along well with 35.7 kms.

I have found a better route to try on the way home today from the nice little map I got at the commuter station at MEC in North Van this morning. Also got a nice little blinky turtle light for the back of my pack.

shirk
05-27-2008, 11:44 AM
Oh and my team of one is in 1st place on the companies of 1 to 10 people on that list. 100% new riders :)

yeah ROI

stinky_rider7
05-27-2008, 12:05 PM
My team has 24 signed up and so far 20 have at least 1 trip logged Our best team member is at 2 trips for a total of 88.4 km.

Our team total right now is 27 trips with a total of 464.3 km

I think some people simply forget to log their trips and if they are on the team, it skews the average.

Yup, trying to do 5 for 5. So far so good.

54.4km so far & 10.5 kg of CO2.

Dave K's thread over on NBR got me thinking:
I'm curious who has the most bridges to cross? One of my routes home has 3, with an alternate route of just 1. Before I changed jobs, that route had 3 as well.

Woot, woot I love my commute. I got a free cookie and OJ on my way into work today. See it pays to

a. Ride on the bike routes
b. Take a different route to work and back :D

I looked at some of the figures:

"During Bike To Work Week, each team member has biked this many kilometers, on average.

Digital Alchemy Entertainment Inc. / Digital Alchemy 767.5 KM"

That's quite a commute, or the forgot to divide the number of KM by the number of riders.

Me too. Hit the VACC commuter station in Moody Park in New West. this morning. Starbucks coffee, Cob's Bread scones & fruit. Also won a book on Lance & the 2004 Tour. I think they had a draw prize for every rider. That is 3 commuter stations so far, 3 more I can hit before the end of the week.

3 for 3 here also. Thats with some riding after work on Monday and a 5:30 am dawn patrol ride this morning.

Tonight after riding the 11.3kms home I plan to ride a lap on Fromme, from the house....hmmm I should route and map a Fromme lap and add that to my kms.

At 60.9kms so far.

I think you can just enter a distance without a route. My wife had to to that as she takes Skytrain for the middle of her ~30km commute in the morning.

Indeed, you can just enter a number. I had to since I take the Seabus in the middle...

Still no free goodies from a commuter station  since I'm either late or can't find it... I'm hopeful though since I have 5 potential commuter stations lined up for thursday & friday

4 out of 4 completed so far for a total of 62.4km

This afternoon, I'll add another 13.6 for a grand total of 76km and 5 out of 5 :)

I must say that the commuter stations are nice: there's nothing better than getting a free cookie at the top of a climb :)

4.5 down and just the home leg tonight to go 5 for 5.

This was just the kickstart I needed to now bike commute full time.

Need to find a cheap old road bike to covert into a faster commuter. My old KHS Comp is okay, but I want more speed dammit.

So, who's keeping up with their "bike to work week" pace?

I'm at 3 out of 4 so far, so 1 day less than last week. Getting wet on tuesday afternoon wasn't as bad as I expected...

I am ashamed to say that I will use "my commuter is getting a tune up at the shop" excuse this week :(. But I'll try to keep honest next week starting Monday for sure. Let's continue posting up here for motivation purposes.

In the shop for a whole week? Shoulda taken it to Matt.

Last week my commuting fell off, but I have a better excuse than my bike just getting repaired. It got run over by a truck and destroyed the rear chainstays and the wheel.

I did manage to ride my regular mountian bike into our North Van office 3 of 5 days. But thats only 9 blocks from home, all downhill in the morning and I was lazy and pushed up the hill twice.

Until I get another commuter bike set up my only ride days will be to the North Van office and not the Burnaby.

5 for 5 the last two weeks.
117 km week that I'm counting as training for the Test.
I work the 3:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift this week, so the ride home, in the dark, in the rain, dodging drunks on Granville, will be exciting.
