Looking better, but still room for improvement.

-Your stringers look like they're too small. You shouldn't be using anything with a diameter of less than 5-6". They may be big enough but it's difficult to tell without a reference. The posts your using are huge in comparison.
-Strip the bark off of all the wood you use. The bark retains moisture and will promote faster decomposition.
-Rung spacing on the first bridge pictured is too large

The stringers are at least 5 incehs wide, they look small in the picture, and the rungs are far spaced apart on the first bridge because your supposed to stay in the middle.
Thanks for the idea about the bark.
Any more comments from anyone??

The rung spacing comment is so people don't have their feet fall through the bridge and break their ankle.

As you make wooden shit, always ask yourself;

"Will this hold a motocross?"

It looks like some of your rungs may fail this test.

But seriously, this is all about trial and error. The first few things you build are going to be... well... substandard. And thats fine, keep working and eventually your stuff will totally rule. Go slow. Aim for no less than a cm of play in your structures when you kick the shit out of it (it should feel like cement). Make that shit burly. Dig your posts deeeeep. Rungs from thick cedar (2-3 inches, min.). Be picky. Keep at it. Hike other mtn bike trails in your area and observe.

one very minor point, as your rungs are fairly pinner, you might want to put the stringers a little more to the center, so that the rungs have more support. The general rule of thumb is for the rung to overhang the stringer by about 2-3 inches, depending on rung thickness, stringer diameter and nail size.

Trail is looking great, hope you are havin fun building it!

thanks, the rungs are acutally pretty thick on the second bridge, and just a few on the first one arent, both of the structures are rock solid

Thoughs are 6" in Diameter? That would make the posts about 20"-24" in diameter and 4.5'-5' out of the ground?!?

You must be using the side of the rule with Pinkbike units on it. Flip it over and try measuring with either Imperial or Metric.

:D

hey derek, if you're really the only person who will ride these then you can probably not worry to much about the comments from us shore builders. trail standards can have some variation between different riding areas :)

but you should realize that stringers and rungs of that size will last probably only 5-10 years at best before getting too rotten and breaking.

maybe this is long enough for you ... but if you upsized the stringers and rungs it would last a LOT longer. i think stringers that are 6"+ in diam and rungs that are 2"+ in thickness is the minimum for something you hope to last more than 10 years ...

Everytime I am up in lake cowichan I think how it would be an awesome place for trails...I love it up there.

yea the rungs are like 5 inches on the wider part of them *laughs*, I think those will be fine because there on really fat supports ( am I wrong?) thanks for the critisism, I want to get really good at building, I think Im getting better. Am I?? check out the toher thread I made about my first trail and see how bad the woodwork is opn that hahahaha :D

yeah it looks pretty good man. using free-standing posts and other good techniques.

people are just saying that if you increased the size of those stringers (and maybe rungs too) that your stuff would be pretty much as bomber as it gets.

Compared to what you were building in this first post - http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?t=107409

You've come a long long way. Your stuff is a lot better looking now.

Not to say your first effort was bad - its more that your second effort's a lot better.

I think almost every builder on here would agree that their first attempts were underbuilt. I know mine were. Keep plugging away, it's getting better.
