Anyone ridden CBC yet this year? Last time I was up there a heafty amount of snow was still piled up in the woods. Is it clear yet?

If you follow this thread :http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?t=103737
It will give you insight as to when the CBC trail is open.
The CBC CLOSED signs are still in place and when they are remove the above thread will advise you of that update.

Still crazy amounts of snow up the top of Seymour. Heard some dude named Mercer was attempting a double backflip up there last week. Dunno if he did it or not. I'll have to search. The Red Bull crew was up there to film.

Was up for a ski today. From the road it looked like CBC was clear but that does not mean that there is patchy snow once your in the bush.
I was surprised and disappointed by the number of riders poaching the trail. Bunch of impatient wankers.

We meet one of them at the bottom while we were loading up the bikes. The kid said it was his first time on the shore and his buddy left the keys to there car in there vehicle up top and needed a ride up (probably just 1 car). We got up to the mushroom lot and I started unloading my bike from my buds car and the kid was just sitting in the car. He said this doesent look like the parking lot, "there was snow at the lot were we parked". We asked him how CBC was. He said they just road down the road. Ya right. We left him in the mushroom lot.
Due to massive blow down, CBC will remain closed for the entire summer.

While I haven't ridden CBC it sounds like it's in fabulous shape. Keeping the sign up longer than necessary just encourages poaching imho.
Time to pull it down and open 'er up methinks. Just in time for the rain to come tomorrow.

So, the snow is finally gone, the trail's somewhat dried out at the top.
Before we can open CBC up for the spring  season, there is some work to be done, and we need your help to get it done quick.
For the most part, the drains need to be cleared out and a couple trees cut out, and there's a little rock work to be repaired. We've got the saw work covered.
Anyone that's poached the trail in the last couple weeks - come on out tomorrow evening and help out (don't make me name names... ;) )!
And a huge thanks to all of you who've been riding from the Mushroom lot for a long time! It'll be worth the wait, and we'd love your help.
It'll be a couple hours of easy work clearing out drains and debris off the trail.
We'll meet at 6 PM at Old Buck tomorrow, June 4, and hike down the trail from the top, with a shuttle (no bikes).
Please post up here if you're coming, so we know how many tools to dig out. Thanks!
come help out tomorrow!

Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done. So we're going to cut the whole thing out and use it for material in other areas of the trail. Right now the replacement plan is to put a low level, no risk, wide ass, board walk in. It's not really what we want to do but with so few volunteers helping out we don't really have a choice.

I'm going to beg to differ ted. Last year we (collectively) put 5764 hours of work into the shore, with 60 to 100 people coming to each trail day.
I would like to figure out how to motivate more people to help out on thier own time though, and I'm sure the 15 people that helped open up CBC are pretty happy they showed up and know the truth. I think it's a damned fine job of photoshop.

Grow a sense of humor.
People avoid trail days not because of some perceived internet attitude, but because they would rather do something else that's more fun.
Every trail day that I've ever been to the attitude is cheery, and supportive with a sense of community. It's hard work but they're fun. You come out of it with beaming with pride and a feeling that you made the shore a better place for everyone.
Does anyone know of a person that doesn't come out to traildays because e-attitude's?

I have never come across any type of attitude at traildays from anyone. Everyone's there to put into the trails, not to grow their ego. And the sense of accomplishment and community at the traildays is second to none.
I think it's just hard for those who try to get volunteers out to understand why a call for help to open what's considered one of the most popular trails on the Shore would result in practically no replies and only a handful of people, when people will come out in droves to ride the trail and ask repeatedly when it will be open again...

Exactly - which is why I wanted to share my experiences with what it's like to actually go to the traildays. I find it really hard to believe that people are actually avoiding traildays because of a few people on the internet when there are also glowing reviews from non-trailbuilders after every single trailday of what a positive experience it is.
Plus, the fact that so many people in real life are not at all how they seem on 'teh internetz'. There are a lot of people on the boards that come across less than stellar but I reserve my judgement on them until after I've met them in real life. Also, it's so easy to misinterpret and read into things on the internet. I guess that's how a tongue in cheek joke can be perceived as e-attitude.

my 2 cents..
It's prob just my perception, and maybe Big Ted's, and a few others I know...but over the last year or so it seems that the NSMBA upper echelons :) and friends, have become distanced from the rest of us mere mortals..
It seems that there's a definate "best friends" mentality going on, which I'm sure is cool for the gang...but hard for others to understand, or break into..
NSMB/NSMBA it's like church and state :)

Well what you say is kind of true. There is a bunch of people that do most of the work and, possibly through a touch of a seige mentality, they are close friends and get on well together. Its not a deliberate exclusion thing, just that since only a few people ever put their hand up to help, they just deal with the same few people all the time and perhaps this shows up a bit occasionally with what you are describing in this thread.
But I completely disagree with the hard to break into thing, if you show that you are keen to get involved and help out the NSMBA trail people will welcome you with open arms. I personally lobbed into Canada 12 months ago and didn't know a single soul. Because I showed I was keen to help and turned up to a heap of trail days and got my face known I now know a heap of people and get on really well with them. Any person who shows a willingness to help (especially behind the scenes and beyond the scope of normal trail day volunteering) will find that they will be initiated into the stonecutters pretty damn quick :).

Rest assured, this is an "internet bulletin board" phenomenon, and not exclusive to north shore mountain biking.
.
It's unfortunate that this "internet bulletin board" is likely the largest form of information/advertising media for the NSMBA and sometimes opinions are formed based on comments and posts.
What is really unfortunate about that is that I've yet to meet anyone affiliated with the NSMBA that isn't totally stoked on having fun and working hard to ensure there are trails for the masses to ride.

06-16-2008, 06:08 PM
Nice to see this flared up once everyone got in front of their work computers! :)
Firstly, my comments certainly do not apply to the NSMBA as a body. My experiences at trail days, Rippers, and other events have been the same as others in that the atmosphere and company has always been superb and great fun. I am referring more to the comments of certain trail builders on this board, who often take shots at the lack of help received, yet then proceed to mock the riding majority in threads such as this. Yes, I realise it's a joke, but when people walk around as though they have more right to the trails than others is it any wonder that some animosity is felt? And yes, if my conversation with various riders, and the feedback I've received via private communication in relation to this thread is anything to go by, this attitude does indeed put people off coming to traildays.
Further, it was also the case last year that CBC remained officially closed for a couple of weeks after it was clear of snow (yes, I rode it before the "official" opening whilst stopping to clear the bits of loose deadfall this year, and after being given the all clear from Jeremy last year) yet several prominent trail builders proceeded to ride it, whilst handing out abuse for similar behavior on these boards.
Darklord, I think it's to be expected that the NSMBA itself is a little cliquey. It's a small organisation, the members of which put in a lot of hours together. It's somewhat inevitable. Just to reiterate though, traildays have always been fantastic, and I think the NSMBA do an excellent job of organising and promoting them to all concerned.
I think I too am going to try and duck out of this thread from now. Hopefully my comments can be mulled over by those they pertain to.

just as you guys may have some valid points, perhaps you could try to see the other side as well.
the core vollies have a shit ton of hard thankless work to do, and if they want to vent a little bit or post a joke then maybe you could try to accommodate that as well.
these posters are not representing the official NSMBA line, nor do i really believe any significant number of people would decide not to come out to a trail day based on this. most people are smart enough to see a joke or sarcasm when they see it.

i think he was just posting more about the irony of "do as i say, not as i do".
and i know of at least one person that got sucked in by the pic :P
Personally, I tend to give the builders 100% free reign to post just about anything they want on the intrawebz because:
A) They build the trails I like to ride.
B) I do very little to help them
I won’t hide from it…I do very little. I get in about 2-3 days a year at my local BMX track, which I drag Mini Dude down to. We’ve been MEANING to get to a NSMBA trail day this year, but busy family life always seems to get in the way. I send a little bit of cash every year, but in no way is it equivalent to the average 50 some-odd man hours put in per volunteer last year. 50. On AVERAGE. I’m sure some make that total look like chump change.
So, for me, they can be a cliquey as they goddamn well please. Again, they build and maintain the trails I like to ride. Full stop.

bill was always pretty friendly on the hill. chris had a reputation for being grumpy (ha ha ha). i'm not really sure where the expectation for being hard cases came from? probably from watching countless squids riding by without ever offering to help. oh, or maybe shutting down crap trails. oh, oh, oh, or maybe it's from seeing the same people at every trail day (you know, clique members).
all i know is that the trails out here in the valley maintain themselves, so cliques are irrelevant and surliness is the order of the day. i don't know why you guys in NV aren't on that program, although it's probably because you don't know the right people.

Not to get this thread back on track or anything, but can someone remind me where to park the pu vehicle when riding CBC? I can never remember if it's at Superstore or Park Gate? Thanks.

CBC - Neds = Superstore

Just did a couple of laps. Very nice. Tiny bit damp and 2-3 small puddles but really its looking good. The bits that got buffed up on the trailday were super sweet.

probably dusty again...
Swings and roundabouts. I think long term, it's best to assume it'll be wet and take anything else as a bonus.

Don't mention roundabouts to Canadians. They'll be crashing all over the place! :D
There's only Aussies, Brits and a lonely Swiss or two on the Shore these days.
