So folks, I have had a decent tax return for once and I am looking for a used 6" travel frame to ride AM and some FR, maybe Whistler a couple of times too. Money is banked for baby, so I can go cheap and find something to go ride dirt. I have been prowling the Buy n Sell's both her and at PB and so far I've found the following:
Med 2007 Yeti AS-X

Sm 2005 Mongoose Black Diamond

Sm 2005 Scott Nitrous SL22

They are all around the $500.00 mark which works for me. I'd be building it up out of stuff at Atomic Bikes. I realize that the Scott looks wonky in the photo, but I have yet to find the actual geo on that bike, the seller says that he's 5'10" and has used it for the same riding that I am into. The Mongoose looks really heavy so it's really not much of a choice, and the Yeti, looks a bit tall and heavy (I'm 5'11")??

The question is can anyone give me feedback on these three bikes or suggest anything that they have seen out there that'll fit my budget?

Thanks folks!

The Yeti is the best bike. Great for multi laps on Fromme - not heavy by any means.

The Scott looks like it has been a dirt jump bike. I dont know how Smallblock 8s are for trail riding, but every grom i know who DJs loves them because they roll super fast on hardpack dirt jumps....

The Black Diamond might be good if you are builging a big bike, but for AM duties it is surely waaay too much.

Edit - i rode a Medium Yeti and i am bang on 5' 11".

I rode a medium yeti for two years and I am 5'8". For an all arounder go for the Yeti.

Here's a better photo of a small frame. I am going to see it on Tuesday, seller will throw in the 1.5 headset, saddle and post, and the hanger as well, so it looks like it may be a good deal. We'll see.

The medium Yeti AS-X is only 9lbs with DHX and is a great fit for someone 5"11'. They can be built up sub 40lbs no problem.

The Scott is owned a former member here, before he was banned after being here a very brief time. I dont think the bike has seen much other than dirtjumping but that is speculation. I remember seeing him at the local jumps alot (before they were torn down :()

Whats your total budget going to be? Since I'm building a new bike, I'm considering selling my splinter.

I've owned both the ASX and the Nitrous, and would steer you towards the Yeti. The Scott in the small size would be better than a medium as I had a medium and it was very tall(I'm 5'10" BTW).

The Yeti is the better all-rounder, and can be sensibly built up under 40lbs.

Nicer build quality on the Yeti as well.

The Yeti is by far the better frame of those choices. Keep fishing the market though.

the yeti is a very well built frame that is amazingly low maintenance, but i have to say that the handling between that and my sx trail is like night and day. i will say that the yeti seemed to have a better pedaling platform and it is a great bike to learn everything on, but the sx is a step up from my experience. i'd say that the yeti is the best choice of what you're looking at.
