The farmer's almanac is calling for mild and dry for the coast area. I think the Interior and Kootenays should be ok though.

almanac
Winter will be milder than normal, on average, with the coldest periods in mid-December and early and mid-January. Precipitation and snowfall will be below normal near the coast and above normal elsewhere. The most widespread snowstorms will occur in late December, late January, and late March.
April and May will each be slightly warmer and drier than normal, on average.
Summer temperatures will be above normal, on average, with the hottest periods in late June, mid-July, and early August. Rainfall will be below normal near the coast and near normal in the interior.
September and October will bring above-normal temperatures and precipitation.

wasn't the year before last a good snow year as well? November 5th opening and skiing well into may.
I remember about October last year the news stations in Vancouver had reports warning of a very mild winter and that the ski resorts would suffer. The predictions were way off then so why should I believe them now?

I'm using the black diamond Ascension skins. Last year was my first season doing the AT thing but I have no beefs with the product. The glue lasted, the clips held well even on my rounded twins and the skins were easy to trim to size with good instructions and a template. Get them at MEC for the best price.

I'd recommed getting the extra thick ones incase you have to skin over less than perfect snow (they save your bases)
although the G3s worked pretty well too, and more glide. Will have to ask Lee about long term conditions.

I had Black Diamond skins the season before last and then G3 last season.
It seemed that the Black Diamond had better grip on all conditions of skin tracks. The G3's seemed to slip more often. Every slipped step is a real pain in the arse in my book. Especially at the end of a long slog in crummy conditions.

I'm not too happy with the glue on the G3s. maybe it's just me. but if your doing multiple laps then you have to be very carful with them. what ever glue is used on the Volie Tractor skins works much better and it's easy enough to re glue them. the skins them selves I have no problem with.

I used Montanas for years until I switched because I needed wider skins to match my most recent touring skis, so now I'm on Black Diamonds. I like the BD's but I'm tellin' you the Montanas gripped better and they were only 66mm wide! Haven't tried the G3's so can't offer any advice on those, but everything I've read in this thread about G3 vs BD, I've heard before.

I'm interested and at the same time sceptical about this movie. There's a small writeup in the latest powder mag about it. It describes that the original producers had to hand over the production in the later stages to the "large production company" who handles the final product (perhaps to two uninspired people sipping water in this interview).
Apparently a lot of the footage is from MSP films of past as there wasn't enough fresh footage to make a whole movie.
I thought about checking it out at the VIFF but I think I'd rather see the MSP screening tonight and check out something else at the festival.
EDIT: I just checked the article in powder and it ways that Bill Kerig sold the storyline to Tom Yellin of the Documentary group in 2004.
The Seven Sunny Days Vancouver premier last night was great. I really enjoyed the film itself and it was cool to see so many people come out. The floor of the Caprice was litterally covered with people watching.
The MSP movies definatly have a formula, but it's a formula that works. There was sick skiing throughout SSD, but I really liked Abma's segment, eric hjorleifson's part, the India footage and CR Johnson's story. It was really hard to hear the movie in the Caprice so I'm excited to own this DVD so I can hear what the athletes are saying.
The camerawork is great in this movie, lots of headcams in the park and on Mike D in the Backcountry.
Too bad Rory was out early with an injury, I was really looking forward to his segment after last year's.
This film set a high standard this year. I wonder if Teton Gravity can rise to the challenge.

La Niña, the contrary sister
El Niño causes some serious weather problems around the world, no doubt about it, but La Niña, which Figure 3 illustrates, is not exactly a sweet little thing either. In places like the northeastern United States that are accustomed to cold and snowy winters, La Niña often makes for especially hard winters. In the rainy Pacific Northwest, La Niña winters seem to bring even more rain and snow than usual.

was that not the year of ridiculous amounts of fluff? if my memory, of what my friends who were here have told me, serves correct.....
The Mt. Baker Ski Area in northwestern Washington State reported 1,140 inches of snowfall for the 1998-99 snowfall season. The figure was scrutinized by the National Climate Extremes Committee, which is responsible for evaluating potential national record-setting extreme events. The committee, composed of experts from NOAA, the American Association of State Climatologists, and a regional expert from the Western Regional Climate Center, made a unanimous recommendation to the director of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center to accept the figure.
"In accepting the validity of the 1,140 inches of snowfall at Mt. Baker, the National Climatic Data Center recognizes that a new record has been set," said Tom Karl, director of the center. "The previous U.S. seasonal snowfall record was 1,122 inches, set during the 1971-1972 snowfall season at Mt. Rainer/Paradise, a station located at 5,500 feet on the slopes of Mt. Rainer, about 150 miles south of Mt. Baker."
The heavy snowfalls normally experienced in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State are the result of several factors. Winter is naturally the wettest season as the west-to-east planetary circulation expands southward and strengthens in speed, with storms striking the Pacific Northwest every few days. Air laden with moisture after its journey across the Pacific is forced to ascent the Cascade Range, dropping abundant precipitation. Freezing levels average about 4,000 feet over the winter months, so that near this altitude snowfall amounts increase very rapidly with just small increases in elevation. This season, a moderately strong La Niņa pattern is credited with accentuating this stormy pattern, with a much higher frequency of wet and cold weather systems affecting especially the area from the Cascade Range westward. Freezing levels remained abnormally consistently low throughout the winter.
La Nina may impact global weather into 2008: NOAA
Reuters
Posted: 2007-09-21 11:09:14
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The weather anomaly La Nina could influence global weather patterns through the early part of 2008, according to the National Weather Service.
The U.S. agency said La Nina conditions have developed across the equatorial Pacific Ocean during the past few months, though some forecasting models have predicted a more rapid development than has occurred.
La Nina, which means "little girl" in Spanish, is an unusual cooling of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures and can trigger widespread changes in weather around the world, including a higher-than-normal number of hurricanes in the Atlantic.
In its 90-day weather forecast, which runs from October to December, the agency predicted an increased chance of above normal temperatures in most of the United States.
The only exceptions are along the Canadian border from Montana westward and in the Southeast along the South Atlantic Coast.
"Historically both of these regions experience near or below average temperatures associated with La Nina," the NWS said.
There is a greater chance of above normal temperatures in the Southwest due largely to long-term trends and ongoing drought conditions.
Most of the country will have an equal chance of precipitation, with the only exceptions being above-normal chances in the Northwest and below-normal chances in the Southwest.

i vageuly remember it ... i just moved down to Van and was doin a little xc skiing ... cypress could barely keep their road open so much snow ... never seen anything like it since.
... fingers crossed ...
thats cool that you got the seymour pass.
looks like Greg and Dave will be getting Cyps night time passes so i probably will too. too bad we won't see you, but i don't blame you at all, cyps = stupid big dollars for a local mtn pass.
cypress isnt worth paying extra to drag your kids up and down a bunny hill. seymour had a deal where I could do a one nighter for 155.00 and the kids got seasons passes for 15.00 each
Plus I like their backcountry
My best ski day ever
Get up at 5:30 am to b line it to whistler as the coast mountains had a 30 cm dump. there is a major snowstorm going on in vancouver mabey 5 cm's on the ground and snowing like a bitch.
Realize that there is no way i will make it to whistler on the sea to sky in the blizzard so decide to go to cypress.
arrive at cypress 2.5 hours before they start turning the lifts, snow continues to dump
by the time the lifts open Vancouver is in a snowed in gridlock and no one can get up to the hill. Ski fresh powder from open to 8 Pm, there is mabey a skier on every 5th chair. by the time you ski down and get back up your tracks are covered.
it would be tough to beat that day
