How the hell did you ride JW with all those wires....lol

Awesome write up. You're the right man for the job there Jerry! Nice work.
Its cool to see Specialized putting that amount of time and effort into understanding the abuse their frames withstand. Specialized will be able to build more efficient designs in the future if they have a firm understanding of the applied loading.

One day the US will discover the wonders of the metric system.
Cool stuff though.

so very very cool.........If the pack comes with the wires and various hardware/software, I'll take two please.

oh, we are definitely aware of it.
For a good read...

No, only the wires...you are stuck with long white wires.

I could work with that.....
and a little sidenote....seand...your rep is rather satanic right now...

Devinci has been doing "instrumented" frame testing for quite a while too, those Spec guys have my engineering dream job.

Specialized breaks around 1,000 frames every year testing in house.... nothing beats real word abuse. Hopefully some North Shore testing will be in the future.

k9 industries is doing this as well to dial in their dh proto. There as a wicked article in an older (2 cycles back?) Dirt that covered their tests and what suspension they felt was best for their application...

Good stuff JR.
I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm such a dork.... Cool data.
It's really very interesting looking at the forces on the jumps. Some plots show more force on the take-off (during pre-load) than there is in landing. Other plots show that the landing have more force invloved. Drops are harsh on bikes, period.
If you follow the plots along in your head, you can envision some of trails at Whistler having harsh compressions/impacts vs nice smooth flowy ones.
Very interesting....
Thanks Jerry!

kids these days, shown them some cool electronic shit hooked up to some cool mechanical shit and they are concerned about how fashionable the bag carrying the stuff is.

So they can build better trails with this acquisition of data too? ;)

smart thinking, flip the data testing around and use it to build better trails, rather than better bikes!

yeah, but if you put less stress on the bikes, they're less likely to break, so everyone sells fewer bikes... </tin foil hat>

Those sensors are strain gauges, which change in resistance as it's being stretched. This is how you can measure the amount of flex on the frame material with respect to wherever the strain gauge is mounted on. It's not gathering data from the suspension.
obviously, when the resistance changes, so does the voltage, and that is what those graphs represent.

The metric system is so simple; if only the US would change over to it...
One kid in my class was arguing that Celsius is more confusing than Fahrenheit... sure is, because water boils at 100 and freezes at 0... can't get any more confusing than that
