I was hoping to get some expert opinions on a couple bikes. I would like to get back into trail riding and slowly build up to riding some of the harder trails. Or some of the easy ones at North Shore and similar places.

I have been out of the scene for awhile so I am having a difficult time choosing a bike to start on. The two bikes that I am comfortable on and within my price range (at the moment) are:

1. Marin Bobcat Trail (http://www.marinbikes.com/bicycles_2007/html/bikes/bike_specs/specs_bobcat_trail.html)
2. KHS Alite 1000 (http://www.khsbicycles.com/04_alite_1000_07.htm)

I rode other bikes such as the Kona Kula, Trek and Gary Fisher but didn't like the feel (maybe because of the geometry or the overall setup - I am not quiet sure)

Also, I have visited Cove bikes, BSP and Sport Junkies to look at bikes. Are there other bike shops that would be worth visiting?

Thanks for the help.

For the money it looks like you are going to spend a norco (http://www.norco.com/2007bikes/Mountain/Adventure/model.php?id=97&view=1&deets=2) is going to give you the most bang for the buck. I would stay away from KHS they are just junk. But that Marin looks good.

i would advise saving up for a bit longer and investing in something a bit higher quality... you will grow out of that bike in under a few months and want something better

Thanks guys.

brent_14 - if you were to choose between those two bikes which one would you choose? Which is a better choice?

I'd agree with Brent but if I had to chose I'd say KHS despite their reputation. The parts are just slightly better. The frames probably both come out of the same factory anyway

Pretty hard to find a decent spec on a new bike for under $600.

I think previous season Norco Sasquatch are going for about $750 right now. If you can pay that you would be getting a much better bike. You might also want to look used here.

If I had to pick between those two I'd take the Marin.
